Do'nt ever do that! Hammering on the crankshaft will damage the mainbearings if you're unlucky. The balls will be pressed into the running surface, causing small dents. It will work fine for a while, then the bearings start pitting and fretting.

Yeah I have seen this work, I have done it. But like people said, the proper tool is worth it. It's like $15(big set back)& it fits alot of other bikes not just this one, well worth the investment!

This method works. My set of pullers didn't quite fit correctly. I was working on a POS daelim roadwin! So why not? Heres to getting the job done!

Horrible way! You WILL damage the case or crack it. Spend 12$ on the proper puller tool!

Lol at all the people saying not to do this. I do it all the time, he's only missing one step and that's to put a little heat to where the stator slides onto the crank shaft. Took me 5 minutes to get the stator off of the 72 XL250 I'm working on. No damage at all to the case.

It's only $25 for the ply wheel pullers. They work on everything. That's gonna mess up the cases my guy. I guess you could just do it on your own bike, but I wouldn't sell it to anyone without telling them you did that. It can make micro cracks that could be an issue for an oil leak later because it's cast aluminum. Not shaming your ingenuity, but I wouldn't advise doing that anymore. Could be a simple fix at the time, but later on it could mess something up. Good job on getting it off though ✌️

That is not the flywheel or the stator, it is the rotor. The flywheel is inside the cases. And everyone who said this is not a good idea is right.

Sounds like your ignition timing is off which backfires and can blow the carb off,unless you have the timing chain back a few teeth which will leave the valve open long enough when the ignition fires will blow the carb off from the valve being open to early/long.Also if this has been a problem before you might have a stuck valvle or weak/broken valve springs.

You can buy a bolt that threads into the flywheel and pushes on the crankshaft that releases the flywheel. Prying on the flywheel against the cases is not a good idea .

Not a f***ing chance!!! If you want to kiss goodbye to the internals (bearings etc.), use this method. Why do you think the proper tool was devised in the first place if not to gently prise the parts apart. Think about it.

if you happen to crack any of the magnets when you decide its a good ideal to strike it anywhere in that area by the flywheel and end up having to buy a new flywheel,you'll wish you had just used the correct tool

Just curious. Did you damage your flywheel? Demagnetize your rotor? Wreck or mis-align the shaft? Motor seize?

This is a great of removing just about anything, has anyone heard of someone breaking something using this method?

I personally have used this method a number of times in a pinch but if you care anything about your bike this is a BAD idea for a number of reasons: 1. At best, you may mar or dent the engine case with the screwdriver or prybar, which could cause oil leaks when everything is reassembled. At the worst, you could end up cracking the engine case! 2. Physical impact with a hammer on the end of the crankshaft creates impact/side loads on the crank & bearings that they weren't designed to handle. Read: possible damage here! 3. Even though you're not striking the flywheel directly on it's magnets, some of the impact force still transfers to the magnets. Physical impact can demagnetize permanent magnets, which in this case will reduce the output & performance of the bike's charging & ignition systems since both systems depend on permanent magnets on this type of bike. ...Get the proper tool for the job!

Davidsfarm does know his shit. The flywheel removing trick (which i learned from him and have used countless times) works wonderful on small briggs motors But on motorcycle engines, you should really just spend then 10 bucks and get a puller. All the puller does is thread into that flywheel and push on the end of the crankshaft as you slowly tighten it. Waking on the end of the crank like that with the bolt sticking out can damage the threads in the crank and then your really fucked :D

Do not hit, crank pin is not designed to tolerate hammerings.

if u dont hav a puller y not jus buy a bolt that threads in? much easier and does the same as the puller

You can purchase a puller for $10 online. For that kind of $ it would be idiotic not to purchase the right tool for the job and use a method which has a reasonable chance of doing major damage that could cost 100 times more than the cost of the puller

This demonstration is a sure way to cause damage. Use a proper puller... they're available for free usage from most auto parts stores (might have to ask for "harmonic balancer remover").

I would only do this as a last resort, plus this doesn't always work. Maybe ok for a small bike, but if someone has done it up with a big rattle gun you'll probably do some damage trying to get it off. After market flywheel pullers are cheap as chips. Much cheaper than fixing the damage you could do.

Did this on my yamaha big bear 350 one hit with dead blow hammer came right off thank you!!!

Puller is about 20 bucks, engine case is about 365 bucks, you do the math.

The right tool is under 10$, you can actually MANY Toyota bolts as they have the same threads and pitch. DON'T DO THIS PEOPLE!!

It's called a stator and the end of the bolt is called a bolt head. A stator removal tool is less than $30. Your friend is not a friend at all.

I need a way of getting this off without a puller arghh lol it'll cost 150-170 for all the tusk gear to disassemble the bottom end thats without the clutch basket holding tool and the price of new bearings

There are threaded holes... Put the "right" size threaded bolts, and it will walk it right out 🙄

Just buy the magnet puller. It's cheaper than buying a new crankshaft+bearings

Almost any parts place will let you rent a puller. You pay a deposit on it and get it back when you return it. It's pretty much free. Or just hit it with a hammer i guess... lol

Thats not good,you're actually hammering the end of the crankshaft,it doesnt take much to throw the crank out of alignment.On that flywheel if you look inside where you stuck that bolt,there are threads,those are for threading a large bolt into the fywheel which will pop it right off.Good luck to you and hope you didnt misalign the crankshaft.

crack the aluminum case, break the magnets...get the puller from amazon.It's only a few bucks.A tool you will have for the rest of your life to do the job,quick & easy (unless you loan it out) Maybe some kind of boonie (loonie) field fix. Please kids don't do it ever

Everybody knows this "trick", it does only work when the flywheel is not fastened enough. Try this on a yamaha xt 600... Not in 100 years!
