It's an unfortunate occurrence for all anglers - sometimes fish swallow the bait resulting in your hook point being buried deep in the gullet with little chance of safe removal through conventional means.
FEATURED PRODUCT:
-Rapala Mag Spring Pliers: wired2.fish/ma...
-VMC Ike Approved Neko Hook, 1/0: wired2.fish/Ne...
We owe the fish and resource our best effort at clean extraction.
The safest and most expedient method for a clean removal is rolling the hook backward via needle nose entry through the gills. Wired2Fish's Mitch Anderson demonstrates the procedure that easily removes the deepest hooks with little tear or damage to the fish beyond the initial hookset and fight. Let 'em go to grow and fight another day with a high probability of survival!

THANK YOU!!!!! As the Conservation Director for the NY BN,I have shown many people this easy, fish saving technique!! I am constantly amazed at the amount of people that still insist on cutting the line/leaving the bass with this impaled hook inside. Old wives tale that it will rust out. Maybe years ago when hooks were not the quality metal they are today, but I'm pretty sure most fish today would eventually be compromised enough by remaining hooks to either succumb because of inability to feed /swallow properly, or from eventual internal complications resulting from the internal hook injury. In smaller fish, it helps to have a large pair of stainless steel hemostats - they are very smooth and have less potential for gill injury!! BRAVO!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

Beautiful work. You can also knock down all hook barbs prior to heading out on the water. I've done this for years and haven't noticed any fish getting off the line. Hooks come out like needles without the barbs. No harm no foul.
@brianwedderburn2505
@brianwedderburn2505 Год назад
I also smash all my barbs and don’t notice many fish getting off the hook. If fishermen can catch steelhead without barbs I can catch bass. Plus, I don’t want to risk having a barbed hook getting under my skin either. I think since I mostly use wide gap hooks that helps keep them on the hook too.
@jeffreydhill
@jeffreydhill Год назад
I've done this in the past though fish do get off more often in my experience, but that's OK if you're catch and release for recreation. Keeping line tension at all times is key to keep them on. Story time: Ill never forget a good 15 yrs back I was fishing some laydowns with my Dad and after a brutal fight that pulled the nose of the boat around I lost a beautiful 4+ lb smallmouth (wouldve been my personal best at the time) just as it got to the boat due to a barbless hook and letting line tension ease for just a moment as I bent down to grab em. I literally watched the hook slip out as I was reaching and the fish casually swim away. 😅 I never let tension slack again! Lesson learned!

If you look at the video, when he starts moving the hook, the fish OPENS the gut to let the hook out. It's muscle they can control. Which is to say, those fish that you cut the line and put them back? They just opened their throat(as easy as you open your mouth) and spit the hook out. MOST LIKELY, every fish you released without messing with that hook, lived just fine after. Studies have been done and they have found that the vast majority of these incidents result in the fish spitting the hook, and ones that ended up totally swallowing the hook can sometimes successfully pass it, too(the bigger the hook the harder it was to pass it). Overwhelming majority survive unharmed. But with THIS technique, you can KNOW you caused the fish no harm before you put them back.

This is a very helpful video. I thought I might add that when I am catching and release, I usually take a pair of plyers and crimp the barb of the hook. Of course, to keep from losing them you must keep pressure on the line. It's a bit more challenging but a lot of fun. And getting the hook out without the barb is much easier.

already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). ru-vid.comUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.

That's what I do. I like worm fishing, but in my opinion it's the most deadly form of hook fishing. By the time you are certain a hook set is warranted, many times the bass has begun to swallow the worm and sadly the hook. The set normally jams the tip into the soft tissue. Smashing the barb has helped me remove hooks from the top down. I have used the under gill approach. It also helps to cut the line and re tie.

That's pretty smart. But it still takes a little finagling through the gills and not damaging them while the hook is being pulled downward. The best device I've ever seen for this sort of thing, and even if it's completely swallowed into the fish's stomach, is a remover call the Out-O-Matic. When I was a kid in the late 60s, early 70s, my parents bought some of these. We did a lot of cat fishing, and they were always swallowing the bait all the way down. This device can go all the way down, dislodge the hook, and prevent the tip from hooking back into anything else, and the fish literally drops off. And it's narrow enough that I also used on everything, including bluegill. I've seen some plastic copy-type imitations of it over the years. Not sure how well those work. But I kept my Out-O-Matics for over 45 years, till the tackle box that I had since I was a kid was stolen off my boat. I was sick. Fortunately I was able to locate a few on eBay, and swipe them up. Yay!
@krga94c
@krga94c 6 лет назад
@swampy 420 No, but I know what you're talking about. The red ones that are plastic that I mentioned look very similar to the Out-O-Matic with the trigger and everything. Like I mentioned, I never tried them. The Out-O-Matic is all chrome plated metal. Never had to worry about stepping on it or anything.

I've done this for days... & have a couple suggestions: 1. Use forceps instead of pliers because forceps are a lot smaller & sometimes there's not a lot of room to move. Forceps are also so tiny that risks of accidental gill damage is minimized. My forceps lock so I typically lock them on the hook before starting to rotate it. 2. Cut the line 1st because sometimes line gets a bit too tight & that prevents the hook from rotating. Snip the line & it's a non-issue then. I've done the same hook rotation on literally hundreds of bass, pike, perch, even bluegill & it's pretty incredible overall Really good video on this topic. Kudos with a hat tip!

Very impressive technique. Can’t tell you how many fish over 40+ ur life of fishing that I’ve lost due to gullet hooking.

Nice. What is vastly more important is to use barbless hooks. Much less damage to the precious fish.

I live in Asia and I fish mostly in small mountain streams where the fish have very thin mouths so I either use barbless hooks or hooks with a tiny barb. However this video was quite helpful

Hi Peter, thanks for your comment. Yeah, common sense with regard to gill plate opening dictates the use of this tactic. We definitely agree and appreciate your conservation ethic. Barbless is a great way to go.

Great video! I never knew there was a way to save a deep hooked bass. Hated it when I did that to a juivenille. This will save a lot of bass

What a great video. Extremely well done. I love this stuff. If you are not going to eat it, care for it and set it free for next time. Much Respect to you and the fish!

I'm here cause I gut hooked a fish last week and had to cut the line. I felt terrible knowing it was because of my lack of skill and not just "something I can't help". Thanks for the tips! Started crushing the barbs on my hooks as well now.

Thanks for that. I always feel bad for the fish that takes the hook that deep, this will help me.

Man you made that look easy! I need to try this next time, Ive seen it done but Ive always been uneasy that Id damage the fish' gills by being clumsy, so I tend to keep gut hooked fish.

So badass. I have this problem a lot with trout here in north Florida. I hate that it kills fish. Thanks a lot.

Thanks so much for the information. I needed this video. So many times I end up cooking a fish that I would have let go because of the hook. Thanks again!!

That was awesome! I caught a smallmouth on Sunday and I could only see the eye of the hook way down deep. I knew if I just pulled it out it’d be deadly to fish. I know what to do now. I wouldn’t have thought of going through gill in a million years

1:42-1:45 you can see the fish’s eye track the hook as it’s removed. Pretty cool.
