Thank you so very much. Was lost in trying to understand what gain was. You made it simple and gave clear instructions. My recordings sound like another recording. Thank you!

Thank you for this, Jen! I've been recording a lot of metal recently and it's very difficult to keep things as quiet as possible with those distorted guitars and such. Getting silence in the spaces is essential. Great video!

Jen, Thank you for you explanation. I use Noise Gate on my podcast and it does reduce the background noise. I find that it causes the speech to be choppy. As per your instructions I adjust it to eliminate this. I cannot record at -25db as you did or it is really choppy. I record at -38db and my speech still sounds a little choppy. If I raise it to above -40DB the choppiness in the speech disappears, but then the hiss creeps back in. I have tried adjusting the gain from +3.0 to 3.5 to finally 4.0, but I can't seem to beat the problem. I am using garage band version 10.3.5 and a Samson Q1U USB Microphone which is the easier version of the one yo used in this video.

This helped so much more than other videos!😭 but I still get a hiss😭 I started using the CAD audio mixer due to getting a very bad echo with my cohost but now the issue is the hissing.. a very noticeable one! I tried the Gain and noise gate but it sounds too choppy BECAUSE of the hissing🥲 any suggestions?
@BrassyBroadJen
@BrassyBroadJen Год назад
You might try running it through Auphonic to denoise it and then bring it back into Garageband for editing. Check out auphonic.com. I would also check the gain settings on your mic and see if you can turn it down a little to lose that hiss when you do future recordings.
@dianapenuela1925
@dianapenuela1925 Год назад
Turning down the gain, would that be moving it to 3? As you can tell I know very little about audio😅😭 but I am learning😊

Hi Jen, i tried this setting and adjust accordingly but whenever I test the sound from my built-in volume it doesn't achieve the noise reduction like what you have in this video. (your actual video) I have a high-quality interface but a so, so, mic condenser. Would you advise to get a high quality mic to achieve this kind of clearness? What do you think is the other way around? Thanks!
@BrassyBroadJen
@BrassyBroadJen 2 года назад
Dee, it's hard to diagnose without sitting in front of your gear and the recording. It could be the mic if you're having to crank up the gain on it. Is it possible you might be picking up fan noise from your computer? I was using a Samson Q2U USB microphone plugged straight into my computer to make this video. So I wasn't using a high end mic or interface.

i have used noise gates in garage band and tried many things but for some reason when i uninstalled garage band and downloaded it again my mic was fine then it started making a blowing sound whilst recording also when i blow into my mic the noise goes away for a bit then comes back i have no idea whats making this happen ?

Hey Jen! Do you have a suggestion for reducing his on just certain clips of the track. I realized following your instructions made the whole track (even w/ cuts) have a noise gate. Thanks!
@BrassyBroadJen
@BrassyBroadJen 3 года назад
Abbey, I would add another track to the project. Put all the clips that need the noise gate on one track and leave the clips that don't need the noise gate on their own track. Let me know if that works!

thanks, this did help but i still have a loud fan like noise present. nothing in the room suggests that the mic would be picking up that sound, especially with the noise gate on. any advice?

Hey - this is great- I have GB 10.4.2 and don't see a "gain" option in my plugins.. just Noise Gate, DeEsser, Channel EQ, Compressor, Channel EQ, Compressor, Channel EQ - is there a way to ad this?
@BrassyBroadJen
@BrassyBroadJen 3 года назад
Yes, scroll to the bottom of where you see your plug-ins and then click on the blank space to bring up the plug-ins menu. Then click on Utility and you should find the Gain plug-in there.

@@BrassyBroadJen hi! I love your video, although I have the same question as above. I just have these plug ins, but there is no 'utility' nor can I find anywhere an option to add other plug-ins such as gain. Maybe because there is a gain button on my mic? I record with the blue yeti X, and have just installed Garageband on my MacBook Air.. There is no silence, just this low hissing sound..

How about telling us alternatives to noise gate? It's a very limited tool that only eliminates a small amount of hiss when editing post recording. No one seems to have a solution.
@BrassyBroadJen
@BrassyBroadJen 2 года назад
You could also try running it through Auphonic.com for noise reduction or use a tool like IZotope RX.

I am trying to reduce static from a really poor older recording. I would love to isolate the voice and then get rid of the static. Can GarageBand do this? I'm thinking something like noise cancellation.
@BrassyBroadJen
@BrassyBroadJen 3 года назад
Unfortunately, GB cannot do this. You might try running it through Auphonic.com to help with overall noise reduction, but that won't completely get rid of it.

I have a vocal recording where someone forgot to put do not disturb on their phone and in the middle of the recording, a notification bell went off while the singer was singing. Is there any way to remove just the bell sound without chopping out the vocal? I can see it on the analyzer at around 2 kH. :-(
@BrassyBroadJen
@BrassyBroadJen 3 года назад
I don't think GarageBand has the tools to remove the bell. Adobe Audition and iZotope RX have tools that can do that.

Yes, you can definitely use it for music. There are some default presets to get you started based on what instrument you're using. There is also a preset for background vocals. I usually start with a preset and then make adjustments based on what I'm hearing.

smacks!!!!! how do i remove smacks?
@BrassyBroadJen
@BrassyBroadJen 3 года назад
GarageBand doesn't have a feature for that. I use the Mouth De-Noise in iZotope RX to get rid of smacks. Other things to do BEFORE recording include drinking lots of water and not consuming dairy products before recording. Eating a green apple before recording will also help reduce mouth noise.
