In this GIMP tutorial you'll learn some techniques to remove the background from an image with hair. Cut out hair. I'm explaining step by step in this "How to in GIMP" so you'll know how to make a cut out of an image with hair.
I'm using layer masks, the clone tool and give some tips on the burn tool in GIMP.
A lot of the techiniques I used I've learned and/or adapted from this video from blackmoondev:
• Cutout object with mas...
The reason I adapated it is because I tried to make it easy to follow for gimp beginners as well.
Here's a link to the image I used:

Long discussion with lots of hair cut out tips:

This is the best tutorial I've ever seen. I believe this is because you know how to teach. Many people know GIMP, like many people know Chinese or how to fix a television. But that is not the important thing. Your teaching method is very good. You avoid the irritating tangents and "small talk", you avoided a long, useless introduction, you refrain from whipping your cursor around for no reason, you say precisely what you are doing, without useless comments, and the pace of your speech is good. Kudos to you!

I spent literally hours trying to accomplish this via steps learned in other tutorials. Within 30 minutes of watching this video I had fixed my son's school picture (red gradiated background) to a grey background, including the bits shining through his hair. Wonderful work, thank you for posting it.

excellent tutorial. most of the gimp youtubers today don't explain/teach these kind of easy techniques because they want to sell their techniques in websites like udemy for people who can afford their fees. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge..👍🙏👏

Thank you for keeping this simple and effective. Great technique for getting 90% of the way there. And your technique for using clone to fix the color is a game-changer for me. Awesome!

The clone tool is what really sets this apart from other tutorials. I usually avoid brushing stuff in myself, but this made it look less intimidating.

I have to say, YOU ARE TOTALLY AWESOME! I have been working working with Gimp for several years now, and am quite proficient. Creating a .png file from .jpg has always confounded me in the past... I've always taken the long way around, with the fuzzy select tool. Now I know the quick and simple way. Thanks for sharing... (5 Stars to you).

This tutorial was fantastic thank you so much! I had to do some funky stuff with my particular image to get the masking to work (background was too similar to the flesh tone and uneven lighting) but you saved me SO much grief with getting the hair to look normal!

I've watched a few vids of yours, and I have to say I love that you don't beat around the bush, you don't have music playing in the background and you don't take forever to say what you mean. I'm pretty good with the things I know about Gimp and I'm great at figuring stuff out as I go but, darnnit, there are just some things someone needs to teach you. You're a GREAT teacher! Thanks for the vids. I would also love to know what you use to record your desktop and how to Zoom also! Thanks!

Another way to get rid of the white lining would be to edit the layermask with the curves tool. Either blur it and then level it with the curves, or try the curves themselves. That way you can keep the original hairline and if you get it to work it can be faster than using the copy tool. Great tutorial btw :)

That's the problem with some open source programs: they are really powerful, but not so easy to use. Gimp and Blender come to my mind. But they are free and if you are interested, then you will learn it by using them and won't have to pay anything. Anyway, I also have to say that the Adobe software isn't easy either. Specially if you have never used it. I guess for you is easy becuase you have used it. But somehow I think their options are hidden and hard to find.

I've been doing this the hard way using the wand and selecting the backround(usually easier than doing the hair), feathering the selection, then making that transperent. It does have the advantage of preserving the original image better as you don't get the the issue she shows at 4:20 and hence no need to clone.
