The rear window on my 1975 jaguar XJ6 is leaking when it rains. This is not ideal when fall has started and it's raining all the time. In this video I will show you how removing and installing a windscreen at home. I will be showing it on the rear window but it's the same procedure on the windscreen. This is for a car with a locking strip windscreen seal.

It's a 3 year old video, but as a quick tip from years of working with silicone: After installing the seal and the window, you can coat the seal and glass around it in Vaseline before applying the sealant, that way you should be able to easily pull it off after it gets a bit tacky and are only left with the vaseline, which is easily removed with white spirit and other cleaners! Excellent Video, can't wait to change both of mine! This channel is an invaluable resource for my XJ12 restoration!!

Hi Adam . That 9mm ring spanner was brilliant ! After you've removed the filler strip, instead of cutting into the rubber at right angles , cut down/up into the filler void. When you remove the cut rubber you can see all of the screen. Then if you push from the inside the window will simply tilt out .( Well, sort of! ) l use a blade and wire wool to remove the old sealer from the glass. When you have fitted the rubber , fit the glass before you use any sealer , this won't effect the efficiency of the sealer. Now seal the screen before refitting the filler strip. You said leave the sealer to cure/harden. No one l know ever uses a sealer that cures. I only ever use or used a "conventional " sealer for " non-bonded" screens. If you allow the sealer to harden before fitting the finisher it will impede that operation. You really will struggle . So fit the finisher as soon as you can. As you know the finisher takes a lot of time and patience to fit . Plenty of Vasaline or Swarfega will help. I normally feed the finisher into the outer edge first and then the inner. There's less chance of scratching the paintwork should you slip. (Easier said than done!) The rear screens were toughened so they won't break even when being pushed out with a heavy right boot! ( although l wouldn't recommend that ) . If you repeat this with the front screen it will save you time and hassle ! Virtually all front screens were laminated so have to be treated very carefully . Hope this helps. As always take the advise of many but do it your way ! Cheers.

Where does the steel trim fit into the seal?

It's too late to help you now, but there's a factory trick for embedding glass in trim strips; put a fairly strong string into the groove in the rubber. Pull it out as you press on the glass, and the trim will peel back and wrap over the glass. (Accounting for its use drove the cost accountants crazy, because it arrived in rolls, was issued in feet, and scrapped by the pound, IIRC.)

Hi Adam, a great video and shows me yet again why I enjoy driving classics rather than repairing them! Your patience is an inspiration, showing that classic work is never easy or quick, but certainly worth the effort. Nice to see your wife in the video, sadly some other people's sites I follow have reported horrendous trolling when their partners appear on screen. Horrible perverted comments that have no place in civilised society. I do hope you are not subjected to that as a result. Keep that lovely car going, we have fewer of them on the road daily now, in my view the most beautiful saloon ever designed, and I have been fortunate to have owned 4 of them. Best wishes.
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic 3 года назад
I'm glad we share the same view, I also feel that it is the most beautiful saloon every made. I have always liked them for as long as I can remember. I've seen those terrible comments on other channels and I hope that my viewers are more mature than that. It was nice when HubNut spoke up about the rude comments on his videos. My wife helps me a lot when I need an extra hand and especially when bleeding brakes.

Jaguar always used good paint, I have been around the factory with a pal of mine when he bought a e pace, and I only live 40 miles away, I also have a 67 mk11. I don't know why they used red undercoat, but they must have bought a hell of a lot of the stuff. I have had quite a few performance cars, but I came to jags late in life I wish I had come earlier. Great video, and your attention to detail is superb! Good luck to you and your family!

Learned a lot. I found from someone, that if you use 303 Aero Space protectant on the rubber, that is good, it will not crack and protects from UV rays. Even hoses, belts, tires and rubber trim and seals. Belts treated with it last 4 times longer. 45 years on that rubber, not too bad. Replacing that seal, I see is not a super easy job, but is well worth it. Good job. Thank you, and your wife also.

It's a very satisying job. I did the front and rear screens on my 57 Chevy, as you say an extra pair of hands is invaluable. I used to thin length of rope around the seal to pull it over the lip when re-fitting the rear screen, very quick and easy to seat the seal that way.

Nice Video Adam! I really enjoyed watching you show each step. I jumped a little when the glass "broke" free when pushing it out of the old seal. I've done a lot of repairs to old cars but have never had to tackle this job so far. I have a Corvette that will need a rear window seal soon and the '99 hardtop rear glass is pricey! Not looking forward to that job even after your excellent video. It would be nice to see how you polish the stainless trim. I know a buffer wheel can destroy that stuff in the blink of an eye!

I just discovered your video today, trying to figure out how to get that lock strip back in. I bought a new one and will try the 9 mm box end . Your videos are the only way I have been able to have the courage to work on my series 1 XJ6 . I am four months into the service aspect for the vehicle all in my garage. I’m looking forward to a video of the final operation, when you put back the stainless steel trim. Incidentally I think I may still have an original tool especially made for forcing the locking rubber strip in place (as an alternative to the wrench). It was first used on my Mk1 and 2 years ago. I‘ve never seen a xj s1/2 without rust under the seal! If you want to avoid the hardened seal, you can use a plasticiser with dibutyl maleate, that works perfectly with rubber parts, dashboards , doorcards, convertible tops, tires...

The locking round section rubber is normally fitted using a wire loop which spreads the rubber with the round rubber going through the loop. It goes in very easily without elongating it. Im sure you must have seen such a tool, easily made.

Nice work! I'd love a few headcam shots when you're doing the actual work. This was especially obvious when your wife was filming the prying of the seal which was really nice for demonstration. Also, what type of sealant was used? Silicone I presume, but these chemicals/materials vary by name from country to country, or even from store to store!

That’s a great idea with the headcam! I’ll invest in one. I used a windscreen sealant that is made for fitting these types of screens. There are lots of brand and most are similar. I like ones that take a while to cure so you get longer working time.

Adam, great video !!! Learning a lot from You all the time. I 've got a question. When You put the locking gum in - should the sealant liquid be "warm" ? I ve got this problem with my Jag that I put windscrean into the rubber seal and "glued" it with butyl sealent but I did it half a year ago.Now I'll try to put this locking gum like You did but my question is - should this butyl "liquid sealent" be "just put inside" 10 minutes earlier to do this or will it be possible to put this locking gum after some time? In another way - to put the locking gum inside - is it important that the butyl sealent liquid hasnt dry out?
