Hi Danny about two years ago I had a phal that had pushed out a keiki from a flower spike. But the keiki didn't develop much for two three months and during that time the mother plant stem rotted and dropped all it's leaves. I cutted off the keiki with a little bit of the stem on both sides. The keiki had two tiny leaves but no root whatsoever. After three months in spagnum moss soaked finally the keiki pushed out a root and another. The little guy two years latter is doing great !! 😊.

Hi Dani, I've been watching your videos for about 3 years. I love them all! This past summer I got 3 phal orchids that were in very bad shape. I decided; even though I doubted they would survive, to try to save them. Now 3 months later, thanks to your videos, I now have 3 strong healthy orchids that are about to bloom. Each plant has 2 spikes. All 6 spikes have buds on them. I'm so excited and grateful to you for your help.

I had always loved orchids but was afraid they would be difficult to grow. But, I bought Mama Phalaenopsis on sale at Walmart for $8.99 last Fall. This Spring Mama had not one, but two keikis! both keikis and Mama had flower stalks before I even transplanted the little ones, now they are all blooming. Thanks so much Danny, for sharing all your knowledge and expertise. You are awesome! Wish I had a way to post a photo of them.

That video comes at a perfect time. I have a very vigerous Phal that is really important too me, and it has just started pushing out its third basel keiki - the two bigger ones are still attached, and I was unsure about how to proceed because the newest keiki is basically on top of one of the older ones, with just one of mom's leaves between them. Seeing your tutorial now, I feel much more confident about seperating the older of the two. The first tiny root just started to show a few days ago, so it'll be a while still. Thanks for always uploading the best tutorials!

Hi Danny, superbly well done, the perfect video on the subject of keikis on a phalaenopsis. When removing a keiki at the top of a spike, will it hurt the plant, and what will the plant do next, grow another keiki or put out a flower ? I have a healthy phalaenopsis pulchra with a keiki at the top of the spike. Thanks Danny.

I have a Dendrobium kingianum. It has bloomed 2x, each time producing 2 tiny flowers. The smell is heavenly. What it does produce is keikis in abundance! so far I've removed 15 babies in just over1.5 years . I'm due to remove another 4 keikis and repot the mother plant as well. my ? is- is this a normal issue for this type of plant or ? I also have another type of orchid doing the same. I wish I knew what it's name is but that is lost. It is .5 cm at base- as it grows the pseudobulb gets thicker produces 2 leaves on up the stem in segments with 2 apposed leaves that produce flowers (3) under the leaves. My last one(pseudobulb stem) is producing keiki's and flowers together under 3 sets of leaves- I think in this case it is a last ditch attempt of a sick plant. I'm repotting it also. To me this isn't normal activities. I love the fact that these plants are doing this, giving me new plants but can't help wondering if It is my care that is causing it. Can you give me a clue -I'm a three year grower of orchids, with a lot of ?

Thank you Danny for sharing the tips of handling keikis. One of my orchids started growing a keiki on the middle of its stem about six months ago. So far it has only one small root about 1/2 inch long. I will trim and replant it when it develops more roots as you said. Your video, and the past ones about the keikis, really helped a lot! You mentioned you would list your hormonal paste product in the description, but I couldn't locate that. Could you please kindly provide me the info? 🙏🏻

Hi Danni ......Question I have just repotted a keiki and was wondering how long till it really starts to take off.....it has 3 well established roots IT grew OUT of medium totally it grew off a sick orchid......trail and error sadly NEW to orchids BUT I already learnt one lesson ........I planted the little guy in a 3 inch maybe 2 inch high pot VERY small but just enough space for the little one to have a new home and a lot of holes in the pot for air flow. NET pots. I just let some distilled water run over it for 3 seconds and I guess I just wait a month for it to harden off as you put it?? Any other advice would be great I am listening to your baby orchid vids.

SOS please advise!!! I have an orchid that is on its last leg. I had no idea as it flowered so beautifully since I had it. I was amazed because it was almost always in bloom. But I have a dozen orchids so I figured I would repot since one lost a couple of leaves. To my surprise the one that always bloomed had NO ROOTS!!! NONE!!! It still had a stem blooming. I cut the other two and put them in an half empty Perrier bottle. I have a kiki but only has two leaves an inch long. What do I do????????????

I bought a beautiful orchid that had two stems full of blossoms but all the blossoms fell off within two weeks. This has never happened before the leaves are still big, green and pretty but in the same pot there was also a tiny baby orchid. I removed it and put it in a bowl for now. Until I could get some bark to put it in which arrived today. As I went to move it, I noticed it is a actually wrapped in some type of thin paper? Should I cut it off? Also side note, while removing the baby, I noticed mold growing in the bottom of the soil. Maybe that is why the flowers fell off?

Thank you for all your excellent videos Dani! I discovered your videos when one of my phals put out 2 keikis at once, on 2 separate spikes. I let them grow all winter (northern U S.) then separated, and now mom and the twins are doing wonderful 👏 Question though- what "usually" happens with the terminal spikes? There seems to be a decent-sized leaf on your larger phal - could that become a keiki if you leave it long enough?

Hi Danny, I have my very first Keike and it is a basil one. It has about three roots which are only the length of a short clipped thumb fingernail. So Small :/ my dilemma is the mother plant is dying and i have let the keike stay so far. The mama has one withered leaf on her and another that has now turned quite yellow. My question is this , the mama has a couple very healthy roots despite losing its leaves. The one remailing leaf is very poor and withered the plant is dying for sure despite the healthy roots. Is there any benefit to the baby to leave it attatched or should I remove? It seems the babys growth has stalled in the root department so am concerned :/ Please advise, remover her and hope all turns out? Or leave her as you think there might be some benefit? Please let me know your thoughts thank you and PS I LOVE your show and have been watching for three years now

Actually, there are 3 places where a keiki can appear on a Phalaenopsis. Either the flower spike, the stem and the roots. Root keiki is more often seen in non-polychilos species like the P. stuartiana for example.

Hi, it isn't advisable, as organic potting mixes break down and become very acidic in time, risking burning the roots.

It has 30cm long roots, about 4 or five, and it looks green, healthy but a bit heavier now. Can I still plant it? Cut the stem and plant it in a larger pot? If so I guess I have to soften the roots so I can place them around the pot or else they won’t fit in it 🤪 Thank you for your informative videos.

Hi, yes indeed! After division, soak the roots well to make it easier for them to bend. Also the 'hardening off' part should be done very gradually if the roots never grew in the medium. They are only adjusted to your air humidity at this point. Good luck!
