Removing and treating rust areas Mercedes Sprinter van 

I have had several Sprinters and it is the rust blisters that get them every time. Eventually it becomes untenable trying to chase the millions of chips that rapidly turn to rust.The guy who sprays these at the factory deserves an award for spraying a whole van with about half a litre of paint!

Sprinter vans are rust buckets (For the enormous price tags). Great vehicles, but they have to make the bodies more rust proof.

Beautiful job, especially on the large highly visible rust bubble. My repairs look like a quilt, but only close-up About the time you posted the video, I have very successfully sanded out the rust bubbles, sanding until I reach clean primer or clean metal.... rust will be LARGER than the visible, by at LEAST 50%. Keep sanding until you hit uncontaminated metal or primer, that is what has worked for the long-term, though I hated to paint an area over 8 sq inches in one area. My sprinter is a 2007, so perfection is not required. I used a sandable primer and Duplicolor ( a joke, not even similar ) paint. I masked off SQUARES where I sanded and prepped. They ARE visible up close, but not from 12' or more, unless you are seeking them out. For a company work vehicle, it does look good. People often ask if the van is NEW. I am a locksmith, and I have NO air tools, no autobody tools other than trim pad removers. Today I just finished sanding out a bunch of bubbles... they ALL were in the slider and the corner bottom wheel well, at the slider juncture. My only tools were a Rockwell oscillating tool, and the sanding kit that came with it. I have had this in the van for service call, in case I needed it... never touched the tool in 5 years. Found a use for it today. It worked exceptionally well. I never would use body filler, unless there was a dent, or the metal had rusted through... Build-up primer and sand, repeat over n over n over... I am not giving ANYONE body work instructions, just the results of having tried it various ways. The result would look like the CIA redacted my van, if I sprayed the repairs in black.

Great video, I like the brash brush head on the drill idea very tidy for small spots of rust, I just got a transit converted which has a few small spots of rust so I'm going to use your process.

Try soft edge to spray out to. No edge to polish out . And get a power file will speed the whole lot up . Good effort though

Looks great ! I was hoping to see a square-on side shot / video of the largest area that you repaired as opposed to the acute angle which we saw 😐

Tip. Fold the tape in half then stick the sticky part on the outside leaving the folded tape closest to the area you will spray. It gets underneath without leaving that hard edge it blends in more

i had some as you with my vito and sprinter over the years plus bigger rust parts used a binder with steal brush built into it to blast it all off then harreited it like you then painted it in haperite paint then thick primer sand then all down until level then paint them all over in a different colour mercs are rust like hell oh but in the harite paint that's full cover of the van paint then sand all down then paint it again what ever colour I do usually mat black.

dont dip the brush onto rust then dip into the tub you contaminate the rest of the Kurust . use a seperate container

Don't rub your fingers on newly sanded areas the greases on your skin cause rust.

Nicely done, cannot believe it is the first time) The thing is, you will see the rust bubbling through within a year, two tops To have it sorted for a longer time, the key is to SANDBLAST it (doable even as a DIY) Then there are more ways to continue For instance there are convenient non-porous fillers (holding way better, than usual soft fillers) and topcoat w 2k acrylic paint

I looked for a one, two or three year paint repair update. . how did it go ? did it last? what would you have done differently?

Great video and finish on the van! What paint did you use? I have tried the Halfords Mercedes Arctic White and the colour match is terrible. I am hoping to tackle the exact same rear panel spot on mine.

Is this paint called artic white by any chance that's what mercedes told me to use. Artic White code 9147 . I have done the same kind or repair on my sprinter but the paint is coming up a cream white as compared to the brighter white of the original colour. Any idea why? So far i have put three coats on and no laquer.
