We took our rooster to the Vet to grind down the spurs and trim the toenails. As it was there was some bleeding anyway. But, the Vet stopped it. They can bleed out from this procedure because it is actually cutting part of their leg bone. I was so grateful for my Vet and he only charged me $5.

My husband came up with a trick for our roosters. He takes wire nuts and puts them on the spurs. They don’t come off and they can’t spur you. Pretty comical seeing them run across the yard!

I love watching you and your lovely flock of chickens. I only have one chicken left. She is molting, now when the temperature in CO is in the 20°s I put her into a pet carrier and keep her in the warm garage until her feathers grow back in. I also give her a can of cat food for more protein.

My Papa would take his eggs down to the creek and if the egg floated you let it go. If it sunk to the bottom it was fresh :)

He trust you Helen, it's his nature to defend the coop...keep that pole you used on the snake in your hand, that should remind them what not to do

The Mexican techs at the vet hospital I worked at told me to bake a potato, cut a slit in it and stick the spur in for about 30sec. Then take a pliers and with a gentle rock back and forth the spur pops off and the heat cauterizes the quick so it doesn't bleed. Put vaseline on it or the violet purple stuff to keep the other chickens from pecking at it. Works great

I soooo miss pecans from my Grannie's huge old tree. They were the best ones ever. Too expensive to even buy a bag of mixed nuts these days to put in my nut bowl. Those aren't as good as the ones we used get back in the day. My daddy used to make praline pecans to die for. And we had all we needed for cooking and candies, and just snacking on. I love all kinds of nuts, but pecans are my very favorite. I wish I knew a trusted person online to buy pecans from this year from. Like I said the ones at the store always seem to be old and rancid. I miss my family the most during holidays...I wish I could have had children, but the little ones from the family no longer keep in touch or come see me for years now. They are not Christians, so we don't have much of a connection even though I helped raise them. They forgot they once loved me like crazy. I'm thankful for you and the many homesteaders I watch daily. You all are like family to me now.

I made jackets for the hens to protect their feathers. A piece of elastic went under their wings. Their feathers will grow back in after the molt. Some hens grow small spurs. Wait to decide if the chick is a hen or rooster.

I am glad somone helped you with cutting the nails of Captan Hogers, he is one mean rooster, but beautiful when you went into the house the other day & the roosters were out he jumped one of your other chicken or rooster do not know but he jumped it & bite his head he is one mean rooster. But to know him is to love him, glad carol helped you, but you have to keep cutting the nails they grow back

My Grandpa raised chickens. We had a banty rooster that would fly up and hit us in the face. He blacked my brothers eye. I loved the biddys but those mommas can flog if they want to.

😂 had a beautiful rooster show up at the future Father in laws last year, i was so afraid he'd spur me if i got too close never got to clip them but he came around, he would get within arms length and i could touch his tail feathers though. But something got him earlier this year. He opened my eyes to how beautiful they can be. Hopefully next year i can get my first babies to raise!!🎉🎉 I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos since finding you earlier. Now i have to get my butt in gear and get something done before the ol man gets home! Can't wait for your next video!!
