Boiling tires works pretty good, my method is almost as you did with your blow dryer. Let one side of the bead boil. Don’t squeeze the tire, which will cause water to be sucked into the foam. Let the water do the work, boiling from the outside. Another thing is, my wife let me use the big lobster boiling pot, that way you can boil all tires at one time . Once you get one bead unseated, flip them and throw them back in. For a set of four tires it took us about 30 minutes . No tears to the tire, no hot water scalding your face 🤣 but I’m not a “do it my way is the best way guy” whatever way you get them off to save some 💵 that’s great 😁 sharing ideas is what it’s all about . Thank you for sharing ! 👍👍
I did that too.. dont need to squeez and sunk the tire to the water like what he did its some kind of idiocy sorry for the words but yeah im right🤣😂😆 boiling wheels is the fastest and safe not to only to you and for the rubber also.
@@howardalteisen2281 will the wheels stay straight also when u boil them? Ive racing buggy so thats kinda important. I have lots of new tires and old wheels, just looking for way to re use the wheels without playing with chemicals like acetone. 😷☣️
@@tonyromano6220 lol great comment theirs no way my wife will let me use the oven for my rc projects either. not even so much as a pan..I have no business in the kitchen lol
I knew people that used the boiling method years ago. Although I don't know how precisely they did it, obviously you want to keep the wheel's breather hole facing down/away from you. I have some Losi Super Rock Rey tires I need to remove, thinking I'll try the heat gun method.
My favorite way, and probably the most fun, is to just put them old tires on your fastest rig, take it to the track, and drive it like you stole it. Those tires come unglued super quick. The even more reliable way to make sure the tires come unglued is to do this in the pre-qualifier on race day.
I used a heat gun in the past. Faster than a hair dryer. Can cause damage to chrome finishes. I'll put thought to the oven next time. Acetone will remove chrome and from what I understand kills the foam. I'm also considering getting some acetone to do a bulk batch of tire removals where I actually cut the tire off the rim leaving behind a small ring, in order to save the foam. Those tires weren't worth saving.
One of my tires had a silicone based glue and boiling it it peeled right away the other ones are done with a super glue so I'm hoping the baking works for me
The main thing I've learned from making this video is everyone has there own method. A heat gun is a good idea because you can control the heat more easily. Thanks for sharing.
I want to reuse my plastic rims and they have a colored bead printed on it, if i use the baking method does the paint come off in any way or it'll stay?
@@Nj10scaleI'm late but it depends on the tires material. Some synthetic rubbers can start to degrade at temperatures as low as 120°F. Real rubber can take up to 650°F without damage.
Heatgun method; Use a heat gun in the lowest setting and start to apply heat where the rim and the tire meet until you hear the glue making a cracking sound and start dismounting the tire with caution ⚠️ (safe for plastic rims).
I was thinking the same thing. It could have been minimized down to just two methods: heat, or paint thinner/acetone. And after what his results were with the acetone, I’ll use my heat gun too.
baked 4 traxxas canyon tires @ 350 for 10 mins. while i worked on one, i left the other in the still warm oven. too 10 mins to get all 4 tires off rims. Great video thank you!
Boiling will discolor your wheels if they are chrome and has a tendency to ruin the foams. The way I do it I wrap the wheel/tire assembly in foil like a baked potato. Preheat your oven to 300 then turn off. Place your wrapped tires in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and pop the tires off the wheels. Doesn't damage the wheels, tires or foams. Wrapping in foil helps hold the heat in as compared to just laying an open wheel/tire on a sheet of foil.
As a newbie Why do this in the first place? I mean if this is what customers WANT why don't they ship em out like this? Didnt old rc cars have easily removable tires???
The best Acetone method is to use a 5 gallon pail with a lid. Put the tires in the pail and in the center of the pail, put in a glass of Acetone (don't soak the tires in it). The fumes from the Acetone do a much better job than actually putting the tires in the Acetone. Leave it overnight and the next day, they come off much easier and with the least amount of damage. Though, there is glue residue on both the wheel and tire. Just need to bend the bead around and flick the glue off (if you want).
I just tested on a chrome plated wheel and the acetone destroyed the chrome. I would imagine it would do the same to chrome paint or any paint for that matter.
@@TandemCTelevision Apologies, I've only did the above method with plastic RTR wheels that weren't painted or race wheels for offroad. I've heard of other people successfully using the Bob Smith Un-Cure. Bob Smith Industries BSI-161H UN-CURE Super Glue Debonder, 1 oz. www.amazon.com/dp/B0166FFC96/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LCbaDb2ZZ876G
Right🤣 I just put some tiresome my new bead locks, tried a hair dryer and a ripped a tire, lucky my gf lives close enough to a hobby shop so I got a new set
I have 6 or 7 cars right now and usually 2 or 3 sets of wheels and tires for each car so the acetone method works for me because I've got plenty of time to let a set of tires soak in a container that is sealed. I don't like the way the heating methods stretch the bead of the tire anyway. But a lot of people are in way too much of a rush to wait for anything....... You know what they say about instant gratification... ,.....it takes to long!!!!🙃
I've used a bowl of water and microwave. Use about 1 quart of water. Place rim with tire and let float DO NOT SINK! Set microwave to 7 minutes let sit after it stops for 3 minutes peel off flip and repeat Did this on a set of brand new Duratrax worked perfect
What is good about this video is the Traxxas tire that comes with the cars is a very good tire. I used a heat gun and I rotate it until the rim starts to smoke. Then I get something to poke at the edge and it comes right off. 👌🏽
The acetone worked good for me but it didn't take days. I left the tires soaking in a bucket and every so often I would go out and work them loose. Had them all done in a matter of an hour, maybe. I didn't time it and was doing other RC stuff while they were soaking.
Thanks RGile, I've seen different times to completion with acetone. I think it depends on how glued the tires are. I only gave it about 30 mins (all the time I had). Thanks again!
@@TandemCTelevision Very true; this job was the Axial SCX10II Jeep JK factory wheels for my sister's truck. One was not mounted perfectly straight so instead of just regluing one wheel, I bought her the RC4WD JK wheels. Looked awesome with those Nitto tires! Also added my kit roof rack to her Jeep and it gave it a whole new look.
My 6 tyres have been soaking in 99.9% acetone for 6 weeks now and they are still stuck, I've tried the soaking method and the fumes method, i think the zap glue I use is indestructible
I put a promoto-x tire and wheel in my hot air fryer for 10 min @ 330 F. The tire all but fell off the rim, and was not distorted! The wheel also was perfect! Just make sure to remove your bacon first!
I've done the baking process a couple of times and it has worked pretty good for me, on stock tires, I've never tried it on tires that I glue my self because I only glue short course truck tires and when it's time to replace them, the wheels are also pretty beat up.
Sweet video bro, maybe you could get Frank to combine the methods by boiling them in acetone in the oven, and using the blow dryer to dry out the acetone when it is squirting out of the wheel during removal........I'll be waiting to watch with a nice bag of popcorn 🤣
So question on that, if you have white lettering on the tire, does it remove or mess that up? It didn’t look like it was readable after any of the methods.
okay, so, i washed the tires before baking so they were full of water so the water boiled and the amount of rubber smelling steam in my home is amazing but the tires came loose really easily! :D
I've tried all but acetone. Boiling, i agree is too dangerous. Baking just makes the house stink. But I just realized... I moved and still have a week at the old place... I'm baking tires there tonight 🤣🤣👊🏿
Hey brother been seeing ya comment on here. I'm on Beech Mountain NC. We should get together and go crawling some time. Oh and check out my channel if you get some time. See ya in the comments.
I tried using Acetone to remove my Clodbuster tires from the original white plastic wheels. The wheels completely melted. This method will not work on Clod wheels.
thanks for sharing bro. the boiling method isnt just dangerous, it doesnt work most of the time! boiled dboots katars for 30mins - does NOT come unglued! just buy new wheels!!
Oven method worked perfect for me, although I highly recommend that you do not use you home oven, lots of smoke and fumes. I used a portable toaster/ bake oven. I’ve also tried acetone, it was only slightly helpful.
I did all four of my Revo tires using the acetone method in a bucket in a few hours. Mind you I wasn't in any huge rush. The one thing I didn't like was how much the foam inside the tires soaked up. This was my 1st time ever taking tires off the rim. From a newbie beginner point of view I thought it worked great if you're not in a rush.
Thanks for the awesome tips! I'll personally be boiling mine. It actually seems to be the safest, most clean, and natural way for the wheels, themselves. As for personal danger, I'll just use the ole 2% rule.
Thanks for the vid, however, I'm surprised the oven method didn't harm the foam. The OEM foam in my TRX-4 tires was ruined apparently from just running my RC on the hot desert sun-baked rocks in mid-summer. I've been wanting to try aftermarket tires and duel stage foam on the aforementioned set I replaced.
Foams weren't harmed but everybody's results may differ. Best to keep a close eye on them. I'm betting those aftermarket foams will stand-up better to the heat.
I know this is old but I'm sure people still see this as new, to them lol (like me 🤣🤷♂️) I HOPE we aren't gluing Crawler tires still lol. Beadlock work so much better, look more authentic and add good low CG weight. Hell, if I could get a beadlock setup that was as light as a glued setup for my Noto I'd be in heaven! 🤣🤣 I hate glue. Especially on these bigger rims. Ugh lol
