Hello. After RVLoader's installed, could I still access the Homebrew Channel and normal Wii Menu like usual? Or is it a permanent install? I'm still a little confused. I'd like to try Other M and Black Knight with GC controls, but without losing emulator functionality, Wiimmfi or other things.
@@traviscunningham7062On the other end of the spectrum, there are games like Sonic and the Secret Rings and Mario Party 8 (both released in 2007, by the way) that rely way TOO MUCH on motion controls.
There's also many Wii games that have motion controls has a fundamental part of it's gameplay. In fact, I'm pretty sure most of my Wii library uses motion controls in major ways. What's your point? Not every Wii game needed to use motion controls. Many were just fine with standard control.
While this piece of software doesn’t work for Donkey Kong Country Returns, it is entirely possible to patch your ROM with a Gecko code to remap shake to a shoulder button on a Wii Classic Controller! It’s the way I played the game and it was fantastic. It’s no GameCube controller, but the Classic Controller Pro is still a very good controller in my opinion so I didn’t mind the difference.
I'd be interested to know how many of these games become playable/more enjoyable with Gecko/Riivolution patches. Especially games like Twilight Princess which have GameCube versions and therefore should be easy to mod traditional controls back in
Honestly screw usb loader gx, every time I've tried to use it with a usb drive it gets stuck on "Initializing drive" or something, wiiflow is better in every way
@@daddykarlmarx6183thats your fault for using a flash drive, that's a problem with the Wii supporting them for game loading in general, not USB Loader GX. You'll find weird problems in different apps when using them.
Some games like Donkey Kong Country Returns and New Super Mario Bros. Wii actually have game-specific Ocarina codes which allow you to play with the Wii Classic Controller. The latter most notably is in fact included as a native option in the mod Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii!
3:53 Happy to see that Sonic and the Black Knight has been getting more and more love over the years! Also, these tools are really cool in general! The Wii is getting better and better each year thanks to Homebrew!
Still don't understand why SMG2 wasn't included in the 3D All Stars collection when they could have introduced their own controls natively for it at the time.
Also kirby's adventure wii (kirby's return to dreamland) new super mario bros wii and sonic 4 episode 1 with gecko codes and both the super mario galaxy games with riivolution
You can emulate the sideways wii remote controls with a Wii U gamepad by setting the option to when you're injecting a Wii game into a virtual console app using a computer program to install on a homebrewed Wii U
This is exactly why we need romhacks for Wii games to support traditional controllers, starting with the ones that would benefit the most with them, like Donkey Kong Country Returns!
Weird to hear Jon call them the IR sender and receiver at the end of the video, given the sensor bar just draws power to run some IR lights (this is why battery powered sensor bars don't even connect to the console as well as why the infamous candle set up works)
Don't know if that's a hot take or not, but motion based aiming is amazing, gyro is great, but i wish newer consoles also had sensor bars, i didn't play a lot of games on wii, but the precision in Mario Galaxy 2's aiming with Yoshi is incredible and it's a pity that this game might be stuck on the wii cause the alternatives don't even come close to replicating it.
Metroid: Other M is such a seriously underrated game. That story was emotionally intense like few other games ever made. Pointer aiming on the Wii version of LoZTP was also super nice even if the waggle to swing controls felt awkward.
Thanks for this. Interestingly enough, I just watched your video about how to improve the Wii's visuals by tweaking the deflicker settings in USB Loader GX and it works like a dream, even on a CRT. This just made my mission to make the Wii a much more enjoyable system that much more doable. Shoehorning in motion controls was never something that felt great on a lot of games. Donkey Kong Country Returns is one of the most annoying instances of this in my opinion when you have to waggle to roll because it just isn't intuitive enough on such a difficult game.
thankfully there are unofficial charger adapters which make it way better than manually replacing batteries, but they should've had some option to charge it with a cable that you plug in to the wii, like with what the 360 and ps3 (officially in this one's case) have
If you have USB Loader GX, Nintendont, the d2x cIOS installer, and Priiloader installed on your SD card for your Homebrewed Wii, you don’t need a Wii Remote to turn on your Wii and play GameCube games on USB Loader GX.
In the ending section you mentioned that the Wiimote sends IR to the sensor bar, but from my understanding it is reversed, with the bar emitting IR which the Wiimote picks up from its sensor.
Yeah, there's a low resolution IR camera in the controller and the "sensor" bar is two groups of several IR LEDs spaced out (I want to say two groups of five with each group being spaced slightly unevenly 1/3/1 if I recall from looking at mine with a phone camera a few years back?). It's why you can use third party ones like the Dolphinbar on the Wii still or even other sources of IR light like a couple of candles spaced out in a pinch
For donkey Kong country returns there was a cheat code to make the game playable with a regular controller as it assign the motion controls to regular buttons
What I'm really hopeful to see is really good VR Wii emulation in the future. Not to long ago a PSP emulator fork released that allowed you to play PSP games like a native VR title, it's incredibly cool and a very amazing way to experience certain psp titles. While VR PSP is really cool, the Wii would be a bigger step up since Wii games would translate perfectly into VR. Motion Controls can be emulated and translated so well into REAL Motion Controls, now you can personally box Matt in the face in Wii Sports! VR Wii Emulator development has been very rocky, and surprisingly it hasn't been necessary because it was challenging to develop. The original developer from back in the 2010s was developing in a way that others in the emulation community was against, so they eventually ceased development. Fast forward many depressing years with lack of progress and after finishing the PSP VR Emulator I previously discussed the developer decided to take a shot at Wii VR emulation. Things were going mostly smoothly, however unfortunately now that Nintendo went after Yizu (switch) and Cirta (3DS) emulation developers they got paranoid and wanted to stay on the down low for the time being, which for them meant ceasing development for the time being. Another developer that was assisting with development has decided to carry on the development, however are developing it behind the scenes for the time being without updates to the public, so we don't know how well development is progressing. Originally it was being developed for Oculus Quest, however the new developer that has taken over has decided to switch to developing for PC for the time being since that is were their knowledge is. After completion of the PC version, the PSP VR emulator says he'll be happy to return from his break to add Oculus Quest Support. I'm hopeful things are progressing smoothly, it's unfortunate that we aren't getting updates but I understand wanting to stay on the down low now and avoid Nintendo's eyes.
You’ve been able to map motion controls including tilt to the classic controller for years using cheat files and USB Loader GX. I played Donkey Kong Country the week it came out on a classic controller.
Jon, your videos about weird, obscure and cool details about the Wii and Nintendo in general are a bless after a hard day of work. Keep it up, and thank you and GVB for every video.
One of the best wiimote/nunchuck experiences was PES. Being able to drag players into space and then have a pinpoint 50yrd pass get you in behind the defence was truly amazing. None of the frustrating passing that most football games suffer from. I honestly don't think anyone talks about it enough.
Hah! I went into the same rabbit hole as you Jon. I really wanted to play DKC Returns but map a button for the wagglings. I finally found a way. But you need a Wii U. I uploaded a video yesterday showing how it’s being done. And it plays great!! Gone are the waffling!
There is only one Wii game for which I wish there was a way to at least allow you to toggle off tilt motion controls. That’s Alien Syndrome. A pretty decent game which I almost loved but it was ruined by forcing an “all times” motion control that would spin the camera. It meant that it was often very hard to just sit and play it without accidentally spinning the camera while using the controls, normally. They should have put a toggle button, but they decided not to. This feature would almost be heavenly for that game, but alas there are certain times you want to spin the camera, so this does still pose a problem. Though, the auto camera, in it, isn’t that bad either.
is wild how much more playable both Other M, and Sonic & the Black Knight become when you can play them with actual controls not being able to play Rythm Heaven with the DK Bongos is a crime tho
If only their was a console that Nintendo could put Donkey Kong Country Returns on with not only button inputs and 60fps but also 1080p resolution. Though I guess there's no incentive, its not like they're making a theme park attraction based on the game of something.
I remember seeing someone decouple the Missiles in OtherM from Aiming altogether so its possible to get an even smoother experience with that one. Played with a similar layout to what you did here on Dolphin and besides the story and level design that game holds up surprisingly well even after so long.
You have how the IR works backwards. The black thing on the end of the wiimote is an IR camera, the sensor bar is a misnomer as it's just 2 IR LEDs that are visible to the camera in the wiimote. You can even replace it with 2 candles.
Muramasa and The Last Story already not requiring motion controls to begin with: "are we a joke to you?" jokes aside, the Wii homebrew community is insane and I love it
Something I find really funny is the multiplayer party games in Sonic and the Secret Rings, despite the games clearly being designed for Wii remote, they actually support GameCube controller (and maybe classic controller, I’ve never had one to test). It is not advertised anywhere at all, not even on the box. Found out by accident as a kid, haha. Really interesting that they bothered to do that when the main game only supports Wii remote.
It's funny you brought up Madworld, I just finished it no more than 30 minutes before finding this video and thought that was the EXACT game to be made better by removing its waggle actions, hopefully it'll work after an update, if any
gamecube controllers work on the USBloader menu. I just autoboot to USBloader and never use the Wii controller lol. I'm really excited to watch the video, I appreciate the Wiimote, but I much prefer the gamecube controller.
There is one game on the Wii the I would like to get back some of traditional controls, by still using Wii Mote and Nunchuk. Spider-Man 3. The game uses shaking Wii mote around for light attacks, while 1 and 2 buttons are do nothing in that game. So I would like to make a shortcut for shaking Wii Mote to the 1 button on the same controller. Is that possible?
Gonna try to use this for my Wii, I’ve been meaning to finish a replaythrough of Epic Mickey before Rebrushed is released but my Wiimotes are all broken with the nunchuck slot disconnecting constantly so it would be nice to play without motion.
Such a shame DKC returns wasnt cooperating, its the first thing i thought of, im curious though, could this program work with the controllers from the nes/snes mini consoles? They use the nunchuck connector and they work for emulators on wii and the sideways wii mote is basically a nes controller, man imagine play DKC returns with a snes controller, perfection
Just out of curiosity, how well does Pikmin work? I’ve always been curious to see what controlling the cursor with the right analog stick would be like
@@LadiacureBones UWUVCI is the program for injecting games to play on the gamepad. For the patched ISO search for “donkey country returns patched iso” and look for the archive dot org link.
The Wii is literally unplayable for me and others like me since I have severe arthritis pretty much everywhere in my body and need at least 5-6 joints replaced. I've known about this for a while, and it's a godsend. ...emulation still is by far the best thing to use in this case, though...
If GCtoWiimote could be implemented to USB Loader GX with tilt controls, then playing Sonic and The Secret Rings with the GameCube controller with all of the disabled blurry filters and with mClassic upscaling would be the perfect fix for that game, even tho the controls are pretty good on a Wiimote IMO
i love the wii remote so much i would actually use it to control my computer as a mouse as if it was a tv remote, if i had a living room btw i suggest touchmote as a program to do that to all ppl who'd like to do this too, it works perfectly fine but you have to shut it down if you want to play games with the remote, youll need a bluetooth adapter and the program will connect ur remote more easily than doing it on your own and turning the program off wont disconnect ur remote so its a good way to play more quickly games on wii u emulator, dolphin actually connects ur remote pretty quickly so you wont need touchmote if you want to play dolphin emu
Off topic but one project that would be really cool would be If someone took a Wii and put It Inside a GameCube shell It looks like a gamecube, It plays gamecube games, It used a gamecube controller but It also has wifi and plays wii games
Donkey Kong country returns on wii you can replace shaking the wii remote with the B button using the ocarina cheat system, i use usbloader gx which has ocarina cheat system support, you can either load the original disc and download the cheat codes, or load from a wbfs usb or sd card
It is possible to use this on a Wii U to map motion controls to gamepad and play Wii games like Super Paper Mario entirely on the gamepad? Like this is pretty cool but to play on a TV at this point I would just use Dolphin. Now, playing on the Wii U gamepad on the other hand...
5:19 y'know this is the first time I've realized there's a decent to SMG2 not being part of Super Mario 3D All Stars! I hope the devs of these tools see the video and maybe address the nunchuck input issues! (maybe add tilt input as well, but I wont be greedy)
Oh when it comes to nunchuck shakes, they're actually two different inputs - shake is one and directional acceleration is another. Also an unpopular opinion probably but Wii and DS games adapted to more traditional controls with a bit of gyro or motion movements would make for some of the best games in history. Metroid Other M would easily be an 8/10
Hi John. From one NGC controller 💜 lover to another, did you know you can remap buttons on a NGC controller on the Switch using the build in re-map function? Using the 8BitDo Wii Classic and NCG Bluetooth adapter, it tricks the Switch into thinking it is an official Switch Pro Controller you have connected and therefore lets you re-map all the buttons! And yes I played the heck out of Bayonetta, Tropical Freeze, Oddysey and Crash N-sane trilogy. 💜💜💜
Unfortunate that Secrey Rings cannot be played this way. I love the game, and I think it utilised the Wiimote to its maximum, but an option for a GameCuhe controller would be great.
