Removing pin from Hydraulic Ram

I am removing the pin that holds the hydraulic cylinder in place. This is proving to be way more difficult than I thought it would. It was a fun project but it was very tight in there. In the end the sledgehammer worked the best to get the pin out.
It really is time to get your pre-emergent ready and in your possession. You can get it here

Good for you for over coming your challenge. Can’t wait to see part 2.

Just a suggestion, I assume you have completed the job already, use the bolt pulling setup like you had on one side (place tension on the pin) then hit the other side with the hammer. In an ideal situation you would use a spacer and all thread (grade 8) long enough to receive the entire pin and with the combination constant pressure coupled with the shock of the hammer it should come out easier.

Ok, late to the game but I just learnt something. Heat the end of the pin and then use wax, like a tea light candle, melted on the by the hot pin, then pound it out.

In the future when removing a pin like that . You need to use a rose bug that you talked about. Heat both side up cherry red,let it cool. Once its back to normal temp. Heat both side and with the sled and a punch it will come right out. You will have a few minutes to work with it. Once the heat transfer to the pin , you have to let it cool and start back over.

@@lawnrebel , not sure what size threads you need on that bolt. Maybe a wheel bearing removal installing tool. That setup you had was working, that flat part bending is what strained the bolt. I have a bearing tool, it utilizes a thrust bearing under the bolt. It has different sized cups and a 1/2 thick cap. Google FWD bearing removal installation tool. Was a more popular tool years ago, now they all use use unitized bearing that bolt in. Mazda, ford, Subaru still use that press in style. Good luck bud, hope you’re done the job!

I have practically the same hook-lift just one size smaller. I'm in need of that same piston rebuild myself and my top pin was not as difficult as yours but the bottom pin is my issue now. I was thinking of drilling and tapping the pin and using the same puller myself but also using a hydraulic ram pushing on the other side or hammering while pulling as well. Let you know how it went when I'm finally done getting it removed.

Just needed a bigger hammer. Did you ever try the rosebud? Stainless steel threads are lousy in torsion. If I don’t need the corrosion resistance I stick with carbon steel. Pin was in there good.

Stainless is to brittle for those type of jobs. Beter good steel( 8.8 or 10.4) but, good job😊🤙

Hey bud, I don’t claim to be an expert here, but if you hit the pin with another steel pin, you risk swelling it and making it tighter. Most likely than pin will need to be tossed out & replaced. I’ll bet the truck shops are using a press to push the pins out. Gotta give you an E for the effort though.
