In this video: I felt this specific freewheel needed it's own little video. It's not your typical freewheel removal requiring two of the cogs to be removed first and then a special tool.

Brilliant, I'll now be able to tackle my 1939 BSA Opperman Cyclo 3 speed hub!

Brilliant. Getting into these freewheels is always a challenge. Something that my modern bike owning chums don't have to do!

You can still break in to freehubs, at least the 90s ones I have, but there are a lot less bearings!

Very difficult and tedious work, well done. I disassembled a normal free hub once and convinced myself it was easier to buy and replace. Thanks for the video.

I've got a freehub to do too. Maybe that'll be up soon

This was great, would like to see more really old stuff. Also bike with hand operated drum brakes would be cool restoration.

I'm looking forward to digging in to the older drum hubs and seeing how they work... although I hear it's likely the pads have asbestos in them so I'll have to be careful.

Thanks so much for going through this entire process. I've put apart and then rebuilt a 3 speed Cyclo freewheel just like this one today following your steps. In my case one of the 3 springs got damaged and I then had to use a guitar chrome string (0.2mm dia) to make another one, trying as much as I could to match the shape and length of the other ones. It works but because it wasn't the original one it had the tendency to stick out a bit more compared to the other two. This caused an issue then when trying the elastic band trick as now I had to keep in place 4 things instead of 3... To solve that issue I had to just put the body of the freewheel over the first sprocket then flip it and insert the pulls from that side one by one instead. For this I had to use an ordinary sewing needle to keep the spring in place as I was dropping in the pull. Just wanted to share this slightly different approach in case it comes in handy to somebody else. Thanks once more - this is great stuff!

Guitar string works well at replacing those tiny spring then? Hmmm. I'll have to give it a try.

@@MonkeyShred indeed, it seams to work okay, as an alternative only, though... I wanted to ask - the outer cog on the 3speed Cyclo freewheel: did you have issues tightening this when finally on the rear hub? In my case, as I tighten the outer cog on the freewheel, it slips loose at the very end and then you start tightening again... don't know what's going on but it feels almost that the threads although in excellent condition when inspected are not holding too well anymore on this outer cog. Ever met with something like that?

Very well done and on camera too! Rubber band trick was interesting. I'd have thought it would stick, stretch and break (so I would have tried thread). Obviously it didn't.
@MonkeyShred

A new band should be ok. I had to wiggle it a bit to get it loose but yeh it was ok in the end.

Nice work but I dont think the spacers went back in the same order that they came out

Oh they didn't. I also removed one to get a tighter fit.

Very similar to how I took a mai lard off. Destroyed mine though sadly. Although it was worn and I intended on buying a new one

I think I have a couple of Maillard's sat on the side with the same design too.

@@MonkeyShred The Maillard has the first two sprockets come off together, but after that it’s pretty much identical to this.

Good job fella, it's cold sweat time with thoughs old freewheels , I've done a few of the atom 3 and 4 gear ones. When I strip them I've an old type zinc style dustbin. With the lid turned over so it's concave, you can place the wheel on top and if any bearing or such fall out, they will fall into the lid. Too many times crawling around the garage floor with a magnet cursing.. bon continu

I’m going to shortly be owning a few old bikes that I’m going to modify into a faux 1920’s board tracker, and I really want to run a 3 speed rear cluster on it, and I’ll be making some wing nut type nuts for it also. Hopefully there is a more modern option I can find for it, I’m not going to be blasting around on it, but I do enjoy posing lol
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 3 года назад
I don't think there are any modern 3 speed freewheels unfortunately! They're a bit of a rarity!
@thesausage351
@thesausage351 3 года назад
@@MonkeyShred yeah. I typically always go for something impossible. At least I don’t need it immediately, maybe I’ll find something or be able to modify something to suit me. I really should just go with the Sturmey Archer 3 speed, but that’s easy haha.

Ahhhhhh! No soft jaws in the vice??!! Always use them when disassembling via pawl recesses, it minimises damage to freewheel body . Copper tubing is just about right. Although it's a long way around, you had to service the unit anyway, and now you are fully aware of your bike's parts....🤗
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 3 года назад
Nope. I do have some but they're rubber/silicone jaws on a aluminium backing and they got tore up REALLY quickly. Beyond useless. I'll has a look for some copper. Seems like that could grip softly.
@chrisbliss2034
@chrisbliss2034 3 года назад
@@MonkeyShred Copper pipe works perfectly, use the same vice to hold, cut and bend the pipe into new soft jaws. So useful to be able to clamp up threaded/ delicate parts without fear of injury to them. 🚴

I had no idea about 3 speed free wheel. Thought that they start with 4.. That king of bike is impossible to get in my country. I had removed free wheels the same way as you.. Mostly singles. And have made my own tools for some standards. It is beneficial to have industrial machinery
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 3 года назад
I have a "2 speed" adapter for a Sturmey Archer too :) Although... technically that's not a freewheel.
