The engine in my Valentine NC-2 was seized after sitting since the early 1980's. I document all it's differences compared to a standard Willys Jeep, then send off the engine for rebuild.

I've been waiting for this one to start. Awesome sauce. May suggest that whilst you leave the body as is, because it's in great condition, you apply the Mustie1 rust treatment to it, so that the rust stops in its tracks. If you seek out his video on how he keeps his flatbed WV buss from rusting any further (a specific wax and methodology) you won't be disappointed.

Am sure you know the "LPH 7" designates the jeep as serving onboard the USS GUADALCANAL (LPH-7). Laid down 9-1-61; launched 3-16-63 and commissioned 7-20-63. Decommissioned 8-31-94.

Just looked up the engine rebuilding tag and found this, "PWC Norfolk was founded on June 15, 1948 as a Secretary of the Navy initiative to consolidate public works functions for a naval base. It was the first center to consolidate public works services for the Navy. PWC Norfolk initially operated under the management control of the Bureau of Yards and Docks, exercised through the Commander, Naval Operating Base Norfolk. PWC Norfolk continued to grow and expand."

Up until they decommissioned this unit, they are very well maintained, The Men/Woman who took care of those took there Job seriously. You can search GOV Publication on the old inter web for Manual for that type unit. search by number that stenciled on the HOOD. NC-2 which probably second version of this type unit while my time in service we had NC-8 Land Based but also used on Aircraft carriers.

Nice to meet your channel Turn&Burn. Just stumbled across this vid. Glad to have seen it. So i live in NewEngland Massachusetts. As it happens my grandfarther has 2 or 3 of these out in the back nine of our property. Thought those were the only ones around. Ours are not in as good of condition. But we have lots of the stuff that went with there's when they were in operation. A also have lots of other military stuff. He used to be licenced to buy from the government. Iam getting ready to start my own youtube channel now. Want to document history. Look forward to chatting with u. Sincerely, Pistol Pete's Repairing History.

1 am probably 4 times your age and I seriously commend you for a good job. I hope you get this running and putting out the full voltage and amperage when being used on jets. Makes me wonder if this jobbie ever cranked an f86. Was it like 32 or 36v. And probably 80 amps would be more than this engine could muster when new. 50 amps at 32 volts would probably overtax this motor. When in grade school in Oregon a Portland National guard p80 jet flew over my school in the bright morning sunlight. The one with wingtip tanks. It was painted brilliant blood red and was very low and beautiful

As with anything the DoD ever done is they made T.O.'s for EVERYTHING. And since they did, I would most certainly locate one and refurbish this to the exact T.O. orders. That means everything, body included. Then you would have an exact refurbish Jeep like they used during those times. Not doing the body only makes it a running old Jeep, not an exact Jeep like the government order from the manufacture. I'm thinking you would get more heads turned if you make it like it came off the manufacturing line. JMHO

Dude, I cannot get enough of your videos. You're so knowledgeable and well studied, I just cant help but to ask for advice. My Papaw served in the european theatre, landing on Omaha 3rd wave, then continuing to advance, eventually ending up on the Rhine for the entirety of The Battle of the Bulge. When I could get him to speak, he told me many stories about traversing those conditions in jeeps and how well they did considering you could barely walk in the slop. One story in particular he said the convoy he was in came under air assault. of course in those situations and for good reason they scampered for the wooded areas for concealment. This raid in particular apparently struck my grandfather, "Shorty" as an opportunity to fight back. He manned the .50 in tow behind one of these beastly little war horses, and effectively shot down two German Luftwaffe's. I still envision this today and am in awe still yet. My Paw has been gone for a decade now, and I am as heartbroken today as I was when he passed. I sincerely want to honor him, yet still have a very capable beast in the hills of East KY. If you have any interest in helping me with a gameplan to make this happen, Id be forever grateful. I have no interest at all in destroying a nice original, beating around these appalachian mountain trails would no doubt be more than it deserves, a great replica tribute sounds like the better option. Please consider giving me some proper guidance in re-creating what ill properly name, "Shorty's WarHorse". Thanks in advance, -Brandon Spencer 859-490-0651 jamesbrandonspencer@gmail.com

the LPH-7 was the USS Guadalcanal it was decommissioned at Norfolk in 1994.

I served on LPH 12 USS Inchon (on vs. in: I was USMC, so just cargo). Anyway, LPH 7 was a Landing Platform Helicopter, a ship designed to move Marines from ship to shore by helicopter so this probably wasn't just a jet starting jeep as it could provide external electrical power to all kinds of aircraft. Given the time period I expect this unit was used to start the UH-34 Seahorse helicopter, the workhorse of the USMC's initial deployment into Vietnam. With the transition to the turbine powered CH-46 in '68 I expect they retired these units as the fuel to run them was no longer carried aboard. The Navy used AVGAS (aviation gasoline) into the '80s, but I bet they scrapped these units way before then. When I was in we had the NC-8 and the NC-10, both of which were (...IIRC) diesel (JP 5) powered, self propelled external generators similar to your jeep in function. Very cool find! Semper Fi! P.S. If it ever needs a home the Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA might be interested.

I served on LPH 7 USS Guadalcanal for a combined total of 13 months, (2 Med. Cruise Tours), during the mid to late 1970's. I was USMC from McCutcheon Field, aka MCAS New River, Jacksonville, NC along with our group of "birds" from my base. Mostly comprised of CH 53 Sea Stallions, CH 46 Sea Knights, a couple of Huey's & a couple of Cobra's. I believe at that time we were using JP4 on the Guadalcanal, which is a mixture of kerosene & gasoline. We had the NC-8, & 10 as well, but they were nothing to look at. Well painted sure, also very beat up. Those were very heavily weighted. Some heavy swells, and rough weather your lightweight jeep would get pitched off the flight deck in a hurry. We actually lost one of our units while I was aboard, not due to heavy weather though, seems the sailor driving it was either inebriated, or hung over and drove it right off the fan tail. At 80' to water line must have been quite a ride. He was recovered easily enough, but that thing was very quickly deemed un-recoverable as it plunged to the depths in no time, I'm sure.
