In this video I clean the bilge out as best I can and remove the flange off the end of the propeller shaft. Once the key is out I can then slide the prop shaft itself out. The stuffing box / stern gland is a bit stuck but I eventually get it out along with the packing and studs.

You will have a great boat when your done. There are up's n down's working on steel boats but after everything is patched, replaced, painted and the mechanical, electric systems are done you will have a good boat for the rest of your life. Don't get bummed out you have thousands of people from all over the world pulling for you. Don't rush it, do it right the first n last time :) btw, nice size boat too.........

Go dripless shaft seal. If not don’t use Teflon packing. If you use more than 3rings of packing make sure to use a lantern ring. Install a stuffing tube cooling line. Retired USCG CWO3 Naval Engineer.

A drip-less setup is a good idea. Gland packing has to leak as it needs the water as lubrication, if you tighten the gland follower too tight and prevent any water from exiting the stuffing box while the shaft is turning the packing will melt and begin to leak profusely this may also cause damage to the shaft. A lantern ring is usually placed after the first packing ring and before the final two or three rings. It is a steel or sometimes plastic channeled ring that is similar in dimension to the packing it it has ports drilled into it radially around its circumference, a port in the outer sleeve of the stuffing box is aligned with the lantern ring through which water is pumped, the water can then travel through the lantern ring and is distributed around the rotating shaft and forced under the packing to provide lubrication.

Clean the stuffing box good and when you reassemble it don't forget to use "anti seize". It will work good on the threads as well as the gland. Be careful on what you get for packing. It should seal but not mark the shaft. Check with a packing dealer. Sometimes a grease fitting on the outside of the stuffing box will help the packing stay lubricated. ask the packing expert. Best of luck.
@b.atwater3904
@b.atwater3904 5 лет назад
I AGREE about using Never Seize. Very good stuff on anything where threaded connections are made and also a great lubricant. I used lots of it when rebuilding shaft seals and stuffing boxes, works great and lasts a long time. It's also great for dissimilar metal contact situations.

Hi Stu, oh boy you’re really moving along now. I bet once you’re done you’ll notice a huge difference in the way she runs, smoother, quieter, and probably more efficient. I like your idea of a hard rubber for the mounts. I would imagine there’s some sort of steel and rubber type mount out there. I bet it would make a huge difference in vibrations and thus less sound being transmitted through the hull. Even if you dont do any engine disassembly(if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it), give it a nice coat of fresh green paint. Then you’ll have the green machine and your trawler’s engine could be the green monster. Great video bud, take care and keep charging on.
