I agree. I always thought it fitting that in Order when Sirius fell beyond the veil, it was Remus Lupin who grabbed Harry to prevent him from following. I think he was the one person in the world who was feeling exactly what Harry was feeling in that moment.

Remus Lupin is (also) my favourite of the Harry Potter cast - he's always seemed the shy, thoughtful type who keeps a lot to himself, but is good-humoured, and unafraid of resorting to levity in the face of impending danger.

characters like lupin, mad eye, and hagrid are my favorites, they are these characters who already had their tragic moment, then they are in a sense hired/helped by Dumbledore, being told that "i know its hard, i know you feel pain for xyz reason, but at this point your older now man, i need you to look forward and see this next generation, sure man our lives are F***** but if we guide them well enough the next generation could have a chance at a non tragic life, lets do it, lets be adult wizards for them" jumbled quote sentence sure but you get my point. Tbh im armenian and 27 years old, and im starting to see that happen in my own country/people

Lovely essay, and I agree 100%. I would even go further, since there are plenty of bittersweet parts of Lupin's life--even in the midst of his fellow friends at Hogwarts--where he was poorly treated. Not just by young Snape, but by his BFFs. 1) The famous so-called "Prank." Let's see, Remus has a condition that he must keep secret. Snape's getting a bit nosy, and so what does one of Remus's BFFs do? Sirius sets up Snape to be murdered/mauled by Werewolf Remus--something Sirius thought hilariously apt, no doubt, but by doing so he's arranging for quiet, terrified-of-his-dangerous-side, unwilling-to-hurt-anyone Remus to become the thing Remus hates most: a killer. Sirius uses Remus as a weapon and doesn't give a toss that he's both literally and metaphorically throwing poor Remus to the wolves. If it weren't for James, Remus would've been kicked out and surely imprisoned at the *least.* I don't recall if in any of Rowling's post-series-explanations she explains what (if any) punishment Sirius got for trying to kill Snape and indirectly destroy Remus's life, but it wasn't enough. Still, poor Remus is forever forgiving his friends because he owes them so much. (more...) 2) Something occurred to cause some kind of minor rift among Remus and James/Sirius/Peter post-graduating Hogwarts during the 1st War. We know he's not standing next to James/Sirius/Peter/Lily in the infamous Order of the Phoenix photo, but that's just for starters. More important: Sirius convinces James to make Peter the Secret Keeper. Why is Remus not part of this? He's not trusted, so it seems. Why? Has anyone shown more loyalty--hell, almost *fealty*--to James/Sirius/Lily/Peter? Is there some latent werewolf prejudice in there? IIRC in the Shrieking Shack Infodump Sirius admits he didn't trust Remus, which Remus brushes aside with a "that's okay, my friend" acknowledgment, but OMG, that lack of trust is directly linked to the Potters' deaths, so why the heck is it so underplayed in the books? (And not played at all in the films, naturally, a decision which boggles the mind when you have two stellar actors like Gary Oldman and David Thewlis around to act their arses off!) 3) When Remus is finally back in the Order during Book 6, Dumbledore sends him straight into the werewolves to throw off the cloak of civilized life and live among the beasts he fears most. Of course he's the only one who can do it, but one has to empathize with just how much that was anathema to Remus; facing his worst nightmare, the thing he hates about himself. Again he's being weaponized by someone he trusts. Yes, an honor to be of use to the Order and esp. Dumbledore, but still... it's heartbreaking. Anyway, these are just a few of the extra crappy sprinkles on the ice cream sundae of misery that Remus went through, and worse, they were barely even addressed, and damn it he wasn't even supposed to die thank you VERY MUCH Ms. Rowling for preferring frickin' Arthur to Remus, the one remaining Marauder who could and should have lived to old age. (Er... sorry, yes, I'm bitter twelve years later, why do you ask?) Sorry for the dissertation. Just more food for thought about why Remus is indeed the most tragic and ill-used character in HP. Gonna throw some more things in here: •So he never got any kind of job because he was a werewolf. When his friends died he lost the people he loved most but also his support system. He slipped into poverty. •He finally gets a job at Hogwarts but had to leave because he’s a werewolf •Wolfsbane potion wasn’t invented until he left Hogwarts but he couldn’t afford it and had to go without •upon learning Sirius is innocent, there must’ve been some intense af emotions. Relief, sadness. Guilt. But finally he has a friend back so yay •except he has to watch him die two years later. After finally having a part of his old life back, someone he can trust. Maybe he always held onto the idea of Sirius being innocent, idk. But now he really is alone again. •he meets Tonks, yay. Except Tonks is literally shunned from the Wizarding world for dating a werewolf. Think of how guilty he must’ve felt. How much self hatred he’d have. Remus Lupin was undoubtedly the most tragic Harry Potter character.

I had a crush on Remus when I read the books! So kind, yet so darkly mysterious. But I agree that really great tragedies involve the loss of a promising future. Like sometimes when movies kill off a child, I think what they really should have done is to first show that the child is crazy smart or that they have a certain talent; that way when they die, the promise of what they might have grown into dies with them. How do you feel about children in movies being used almost as silent props, like (imo) the little girl from Elysium?

I´m not always a huge fan of the added story that JK has written to the Harry Potter canon but the story she wrote about Lupin´s background, how he developed feelings for Tonks and how they eventually got married, that truly pulled my heart strings. Remus and Tonks, I don´t think I am still over from their deaths.

Everyone wants to say that Umbridge is almost as evil as (or evn more evil than) Voldemort. Fuck that, Fenrir Greyback is by far one of the most evil characters in the series. His end goal is creating an army of werewolves to take over the world, and he has no regrets about attacking children

In my opinion, Harry is the most tragic character. He looses his parents, is abused as a kid, finds out he has a Godfather and looses him only 2 years later. 1 year later he looses his mentor, feels responsible for the death of Dobby, Fred, Lupin, Mad-Eye and Tonks. In the end, he has lost so much.

During quarantine, Stephanie Meyer is writing a Twilight prequel, Suzanne Collins is writing a Hunger Games prequel so hopefully J.K Rowling will write a Harry Potter prequel about the marauders

Others have similiarly tragic lifes - Harry, Albus, Aberforth, Snape... Remus is the One who wallows in bis sadness. At least he's not as melodramatic as Aberforth or nasty as Snape about it, but... Yeah.

PoA is a brilliant film but they didn’t do the marauders backstory justice imo. Remus/Sirius reunion is a beautiful thing.

For me it's Viktor Goldstein who wins the most tragic character I was rewatching episodes 2 and 3 of Generation War and his story was utterly gut wrenching to watch he is a German Jew which for everyone besides his girl friend and three best friends only ever saw him as that not even as a human being worth being treated as such Greta, Wilhelm, Friedhelm and Charly as well as Alina were the only ones who didn't care about who he was at great risk to their own lives they saw Viktor as a human being not as a German/Jew and Viktor had to endure unfathomable hatred for being both he was hated for being Jewish by his own countrymen and was hated for being German by the Polish Partisans (which is understandable given how the Germans treated the Poles) and also for being Jewish which nearly cost him his life and only because the Partisan leader showed him that mercy and compassion and I can count on one hand how many people showed Viktor that mercy and compassion 1 his girlfriend and three best friends and 2 Alina the Polish girl And speaking of his girlfriend and his three best friends they were the ones who shielded and protected Viktor before the war and for the next three years he had no idea if Friedhelm one of his best friends where still alive and up until June of 1944 where he found out that yes Friedhelm was still very much alive (they both saved each other's lives at huge risk to their own if it was found out that they knew each other they would be killed) and sadly the first conversation Viktor had with Friedhelm since 1941 would be the last time he ever spoke with his best friend as Friedhelm was killed three days before the war ended and his girlfriend was shot for defeatism barely more than a week the end of the war yes he was reunited with Wilhelm and Charly in May/June of 1945 but it had been four years since he said goodbye to them and he was reunited with the only surviving members of their little group it's clear that their is a huge chasam between the three due to their massive trauma and horrific survivor's guilt the Wilhelm and Charly he knew back in 1941 where not the Wilhelm and Charly that came back to him four years later they where destroyed by the war For me what makes Viktor a more tragic character than Remus was because while Viktor himself was a fictional character he story was just one of millions during WW2 the hatred and dehumanization he had to endure and losing his parents, his girlfriend and best friend his two remaining best friends where still alive but they died inside and were not the same people he said goodbye too four years prior and after not knowing of any of them where still alive or if he would ever see them again and even if Viktor wasn't Jewish the war would still destroy him the way it did with Charly and especially Wilhelm as he would've been forced to fight in the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front and given what it did to Friedhelm and Wilhelm

Imagine yourself in that situation,3 of your bestfriends were taken away from you. One is dead,one has been framed and taken to life in prison and one who betrays the group and then there you are all alone and no one to be with throughout the years.

Remus and Serius have been screwed over so much but especially Remus yes.

I was hoping u would mention the time when lupin tells harry he wants to join them and weeps...but harry a little rudely disagrees...that was a situation having a lot of meaning...by the way the video is great👍

His story isn’t more tragic than Harry’s. So his loving, living parents moved a lot to cover up him being a werewolf? Harry’s parents were murdered in front of him at age one by the most evil being alive. So he didn’t have friends. Neither did harry. He was literally physically and mentally abused his whole childhood. Locked in a closet! Usually hungry. Wearing clothes twice his size and glasses broken in two but held together with tape. Bullied by an extremely abusive older cousin while his aunt and uncle encourage the abuse. Unloved. Neglected. Alone. To top it all off he knows he’s the only one who can save humanity from the one everybody is so terrified of they won’t even say his name! Plus he has a scar that connects him to Voldemort with unbearable pain. His mentor is a constant mind game and physically absent half the time. Lupin dealt with his state, even found love and had a non werewolf baby. Harry had people die all around him including Sirius, the only family he had, Fred Weasley, parents, Cedric Diggory, Dumbledore, Hedwig, Dobby, and even Lupin. Suggesting that Lupin was more affected than HARRY by Lily and James deaths is ludicrous!

Nah Sirius was the most tragic. At least Remus got to walk around and have a child while Sirius couldn't even walk out in broad daylight.
