q is a magazine show that’s unpredictable in the best sense - proud to be “a wild mix of culture by way of Canada” as described by the New York Times. The Globe & Mail noted the show’s “raging popularity across a variety of platforms -- podcasts, television, websites, satellite radio, terrestrial radio, and occasional live remote broadcasts."

This is such a wonderful interview. I was a freshman at the Crane School of Music while Renee Fleming was finishing her senior year. I remember listening to a playback of the performance we did of Orff's "Carmina Burana", and Renee came in a little late just as we were listening to her sing one of the soprano solos. One of the choir members said " Renee, I want your voice" and she replied, "You can have it." I think she's always been humble but most people don't realize how hard she worked to get to the level she's achieved. I know her voice teacher, Pat Misslin, always recognized her talent and potential. She truly has earned the moniker " the People's Diva".

I'm 25 and I've been singing classically since I was 11 years old and only NOW have I started getting my real opera voice, and it's only just developing. Do NOT think you need to have a career by the time you're 20, it's not likely and it's not healthy. Use your younger years to learn music, learn how to practice, build up your repertoire, and by the time your voice is physically ready, YOU'LL be ready. Don't get frustrated.

Fullmetal1890P It’s very complicated right? I started my classical training a year ago, and the pressure the world puts on young people to be successful right away is huge. For this past week my voice teacher has been telling me that my voice will develop, but I need to be patient and work. Hopefully one day I’ll be in a opera school, developing my voice as well 😂

Good questions about both Rene's particular path to mastery and about being an artist in general. Also, Rene knows herself well and shares her "limits" humbly. It's so interesting that her emergence into singing success happened just when she thought the door would never open.

She stopped singing opera because she didn't want to "do the same three operas over and over again? That makes no sense, or maybe that's all they offered her. I can recall her doing many different operas.

It's so North American to be surprised at booing. Opera singers should be booed at if they're not doing their job well.

It's not just North American. Scandinavians Aussies New Zealanders, Germans ... none boo like the Italians. And the booing there isn't just a matter of quality. It's a matter of loyalty like baracking for your favourite team. You need a cool head to decide whether you were up to speed or not .
@caninbar
@caninbar Год назад
@@frogmouth Opera was founded in Italy and the greatest singers have sung at La Scala so there is a tradition for great singing. The people that booed her had most likely heard some of the great singers. That is a plus. We don't want the art of opera singing to fall into decay. If you sing at La Scala you have to be up to par or you'll be booed. Keeping the level high is what distinguishes La Scala from other theatres in other countries. Opera is a very serious tradition in Italy. It's got nothing to do with "barracking your favourite singer" anymore.

+Zelmira Did you meet her before a performance when she may have felt, rushed, anxious, nauseous, or insecure? Or did you meet her after a performance when she may have felt, tired, exhausted, hungry, ready for bed, or unhappy with her performance? Did you consider HER experience as a vulnerable human being when you met her? Or did you expect ANOTHER performance from her, where you wanted her to pretend that she was overjoyed to see you, & absolutely fascinated by your opinions & feelings about how she made you feel? Did it cross your mind that her child or husband may have been sick, & once her obligations were met, she just wanted to get home? Were you thinking of HER when you met, or just about how important it was to YOU that she gave you 5 minutes of her time? Something to consider.

She seems like an inward person and I’m such a person. People always mistake us for being hostile or unapproachable, but we really just process things differently and we may not be aware of how people perceive us at all. It kinda seems like women are criticized more for their personality rather than their skills. Everyone is not smiley and perky, especially performers who are likely in the process of doing a performance when it’s not just an interview. Imagine someone walking up to you in the middle of your work day.
