This is Rene Fleming signing the most inspiring British patriotic song “Rule Britania” in front of a packed house on the last night of the proms in Royal Albert Hall with tens of thousands more watching outside in Hyde Park and other venues throughout the United Kingdom. I have watched this countless times because I find it so inspiring particularly when Sarah Connely performed it in the same venue dressed like Admiral Nelson. But what I find most impressive is how great Rene Fleming’s rendition of the song is. Her voice is without equal.
Denver Satterwhite LOL That was actually my thought but I already antagonise too many with my views. I was in a more, and rare, peaceful mood when I posted that comment.
reddragonready Britain certainly is not Europe. European countries--all of them--have spent the last 100 years flirting with fascism and totalitarianism. The all collaborated. The Empire stood firm. 400 unbroken years of freedom - England and the Commonwealth.
Brad Parr Dude, you mistake wistful thinking for fact. And yes indeed, I would focus on only the last 100 years when talking about "totalitarianism" and 'fascism". We wouldn't want to pay too close attention to Victoria's offspring for instance. ;-) You have a very....."personal" view of European and British history.
God Bless the Queen !!!!!!!!!! Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. When Britain first, at heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: The nations not so blest as thee Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall, While thou shalt flourish great and free: The dread and envy of them all. Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak. Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame; All their attempts to bend thee down Will but arouse thy generous flame, But work their woe and thy renown. To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine; All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles, thine. The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coasts repair. Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned, And manly hearts to guard the fair. Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves
I was there, she was brill. An American Lady in London. On holiday in Spain at the time, flew back for the night and then flew back, couldn't miss the opportunity of a lifetime.
This is a wonderful song and tradition. The audience is having a great time. I really like that the soloists over the years both female and male have come from a number of places outside the UK including the U.S. and even Russia. Singing Rule Britannia on the last night should be kept as part of the Proms it would not be the same without it something wonderful would be lost.
Fantastic voice! I remember watching thos on the ole telly box that year, I can well believe that everyone else that was watching were out of they're seats and singing along too. Was my fav year thos one. And I love being able to watch/listen to this here time and time again. Thank you Renee :-)
Wonderful song! don't ever want slavery? you want a democratic society DO YOU???? PULL THE HELL OUT OF THE EU!!!!! UNLESS you need to goose-step to the belgian tune!!!!!!
Amazing performance dressing in that stunning Royal Purple Gown and Britannia Crown! ....just came back from UK myself and there is nothing so splendid as a Royal Romp through Hyde Park with camera in hand. London and it's people are a photographer's dream come true!!! Brava..... glorious and wonderful crowd scene! ^_^
Well, a stronger Navy than Germany at least...but definitely not greater than Japan and the US...and by the way, sometimes Italy is considered to have had the 4th strongest Navy (until the Taranto Raid by the UK turned their tables). Anyways, this song is referring to the era of Lord Nelson.
Ichabod Taranto is really unknown considering it did far more damage to the Italians than Pearl Harbor did to the US, it crippled four battleships, essentially taking them out of the war at seas.
@@marksudlow5083 : The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) actually, not the RAF, & their dozen or so antiquated but nevertheless effective & well-flown “Fairey Swordfish ‘Biplane,’ Torpedo-Bombers” that had then sunk & severely damaged the Italian fleet anchored in port at Taranto in November, 1940! Incidentally, it was a squadron of “Swordfish Torpedo Bombers” that had initially crippled the German Kriegsmarine’s Battleship, the Bismarck some six months later in mid-Atlantic & later sunk by HMS Rodney, HMS King George V & other RN ships in a series of dramatic naval actions during the first week or 10 days of May 1941!
What a powerful, beautiful voice, sings with determination and style! Great, unbelievable almost out of this world, godlike voice. The easy undulation is fantastic, can't listen to it often enough. WUNDERBAR und WUNDERSCHOEN! Thank you, whoever put that on. (Now I would like to her her sing the Horst Wessel Lied) Just a joke, just kidding!

Great lady. I had the pleasure of knowing her when I was in America. Very modest lady who said that she used to feel a fraud singi opera. Can't imagine why.
@@geraldinemattera4251 mate, it will always remain British, But you have to look after her & guide her. It seems that people are doing and saying things over there, and you are all letting go.( But I'm most probably wrong, & this is a Time Cycle like the weather pattern or ice age)
not for long babe!!!! next year it's going to be the european president's turn WHO IS APPOINTED FOR LIFE!!!!!! the queen.....well out the back alley with the homeless!! GOD BLESS THE EU HORDE!!!!
A great performance by a great singer, but my favourite is the Sarah Connolly version. Much more in the spirit of the Last Night of the Proms. What a lot of non-Brits don't seem to get is that the LN is a fun night and very much about the Poms (I'm Australian of British birth) taking the piss out of themselves. Not to be taken too seriously.
thenomadrhodes Years of training. It's really difficult and takes huge dedication. You have to lower your larynx, work your diaghram, remember words and prompts from others. Apart from that, easy!
It takes a lot of training, trust me it’s not easy. I know this because I am a classical singer and have taken some singing exams. Technique is the most important as well as getting the words across, the voice has to come from the diaphragm. Take Joan Sutherland for instance, her voice was absolutely beautiful but she was criticised quite heavily for her clarity of words which did improve because she took that criticism on board. Hope this gives you some information
My old man served in WWII, and was stationed in England. He told me the American troops used to say "There'll always be an England, as long as there's a USA."
whoooaaa!!! all that is about to change with the new european version! HERR JUNKER has great plans for a more EU friendly version of a phenominal british tradition!!! it's likely to be held in BRUSSELS!!!
This makes me miss Britain more than I should. I should have grown up there. Instead when I was eight my dad's company sent him to America. I may end up having to get my American citizenship, but the second I can, I will move back to my beloved homeland.
Spectacular as always and I expected nothing less. Renee sang "Amazing Grace" at the WTC site in October 2001 so the flag waving may have had something to do with her remembering the tragedy and paying respect for the lives lost.
I happen to be an American but still, as patriotic songs go, I have to admit Rule Britannia is pretty excellent, up with The British Grenadiers (though we have our own version of that which is obviously better, because 'Murrica :)).
dude.....if you like RULE BRITANNIA, you'll absolutely LOVE the EU anthem sung by herr junker and herr verhofstadt!!!!! AND besides, brits already love the grusome-twosome's version!! IN GERMAN OF COURSE!!
WOW! Listen to that crowd sing! Would that crowds over here would belt out OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM like that! I absolutely love to sing but every time I'm in a crowd and it's time to sing -- say, the National Anthem, God Bless America or whatever and I start heartily singing people turn and look at me like I'm some kind of nut. Nobody even attempts to open their yaps yet they're ready to yell and scream when the game starts. Go figure.
kraftpr don't be fooled ... events like these such as concerts and picnics in buckingham palace are reserves for the rich and well to do .... meanwhile the society and culture of Britain crumbles for everyone else ...
kraftpr Americans have become cynical because they're aware, at least partly, that the "American dream" has been crushed by rich and powerful corporations and individuals who own politicians and run the country for their own enrichment and the impoverishment of the vast majority.
+Joel Rowe actually anyone can go to Hyde park, and Buckingham Palace garden parties are to thank people from all walks of life for their services- nurses, charity workers etc.
I find it ironic that Renee Fleming (so American that she sang You'll never walk alone in Obama's inauguration to honor American soldiers abroad) since Arne's Rule Brittania, which was written as a response to the influence Handel (a German composer) and the German monarchs of the time were having in England. Renee herself is a celebrated Handel interpreter.
Don't forget that "Rule Britannia" is a beautiful baroque anthem from about 1740, and in those great times all the shitty pop music we know today didn't exist.
@choirfreak26 I noticed that too, but I think it's just what you do there. Look at everyone else with their other flags. I think one celebrates their own country when there. Right?
Yep, we don't care where you are from or what flag you wave, as long as you join in and sing when its your turn. Oh and bob up and down to pomp and circumstance of course :-D
Flemish flags in the crowd, a Fleming who sings this piece of music. Has it something to do with the coalition we had in the time of Napoleon? Scotland does not want to be part of it? A musical Fleming.
