Ren's music utilizes so many literary devices that people have become too unaware of...allegory, satire, irony...blended with sic beats, intricate word play, incredible guitar and vocals, the only word for it is Art.
I love this song! The line "Kill these metaphors I write to all attachments in this life" really sums up the song and really resonated with me. Great reaction ❤
My favourite line too. So deep. I laugh at all the comments that take this song literally. Instantly shows which people in society we really need to aware of, if they take this on a surface level only. Love Rens music cos even when dark in lyrics it's still so relatable and can be adapted/interpretated in many different ways. BANGER.
Mine 3, it’s a reset song and dare I say it, it’s tipping towards my favourite so far - who’d have thought 🤷♀️ Ren’s artistic, lyrical & musical genius + that of his support team, collectively are freakin out of this world & the absolute perfect combo this world & our youth so desperately needs. Great reaction as always Nick, an audio horror… spot on my friend. Love & light to you & your family as always 😌
Hey Dom. Ren actually posted an explanation of this track. It’s basically a song about rebirth writing at a time during his illness when he felt most angry with his situation. Unfortunately a lot of people are taking this too literally and calling it demonic. Looking forward to your twitch on Monday ❤🐷
I heard Ren wrote this a few years back when he was really sick and couldn't see a way out 😢 AND he was battling the record labels that were screwing him over. So he was definitely having an existential crisis.
Your analyse is gold!!! An audio horror movie!! Hahahahaha! I just absolutely ADORE your energy and admire your voice, and you are so bright! Thank you to be there and for all of your sharings. XXX
The more I hear it the more I love it. This one goes straight hard core punk rock. I'd love to remix it with some guitars. EDIT: Ala... "Ministry" "NIN" or "Skinny Puppy".
"Kill these metaphors I write to all attachments in this life" is the thesis statement of the song. Also, "Body bag, zip zip, that's the catalyst" is a novel in seven words.
I think his use of masochistic in this case is a reference to masochistic personality and not necessarily sexual. People who you'd consider masochists put themselves in positions to be hurt mentally, emotionally and phsyically. So people who are self-destructive, self sabotage, people who cut, are always attracted to abusive relationships, stuff like that are examples of masochists.
Or those who stay in an abusive relationship f.ex. Sadistic and Masochistic personality markers. Sadistic ones tend to lash out, bullies. Masochist is those that stay stuck in the victim position.
I was waiting for your reaction 👍 Yes, Ren's style is unique and impressive, 💥 in any case, no one can be indifferent to it 😉 What an awesome guy🔥 we always have a great time with your reactions, thank you 🤗
I don’t think masochism has tondo with sexual gratification. Only the general gratification of feeling pain. Great reaction, thank you. Ren is a freaking genius. I am so happy he finally makes waves for real 💕
Ren posted this: I expected a split reception on masochist, I'm glad I got it I wrote the song on a day in 2021 I felt particularly bitter about living in a sick body for most my life, about anger at the greed in the music industry. Killing everything you know, even your support systems is also about rebirth, some people will have caught the Samsara line and see a man cursing the gods for the hands hes been dealt, others will see it as a track that’s just being vulgar and dark for the sake of it. It's all of those things.
This song is so good (and relatable). Very self-destructive and angry. Like, he's on the right track (kill broken infrastructure, kill your ego, kill attachments), but he's also taking out the good things too. I've been there, pushing away/losing my support system and losing interest/faith in the things I used to love. This is a dark one, but it's so damn good. I'm sure it'll be divisive for *some* people, especially if they aren't familliar with him and his other music, but if we approach it as the art that it is, and not literally at face value, I think what he's going for is pretty obvious. Great reaction, as always!
I love the whole thing, but I really like the part where he starts asking if this could really be Ren? Like, it's other people hearing this and thinking "wtf this isn't Ren!!" I haven't seen as much of that as I expected, but the people who hate it seem pretty horrified. Have seen a few people basically imply he should have had a trigger warning before hand cuz hearing this was damaging to their mental health 🙄 I don't mean to sound like a dick but I was just thinking if this is enough to send you into a tailspin you got way bigger problems... I've totally been in this place, where you're questioning everything, everything pisses you off and you just want the entire world to eff off. It's a crappy place to be, and I'm glad he's willing to express it even tho he knew it wouldn't sit well with everyone.
I've been struggling to understand why people are so upset about this song. Many of his songs either mention or are entirely about tearing everything down. This is just another way of him saying the same stuff he's been saying. Appreciate your comment here. Makes me feel less like I'm listening to an entirely different song than all the reactors 😅
@@sarahmae7913Duuuuuuuude. You put this into words so well. It's all the same. Ren is a musical genius in my eyes. I've been in some really dark places and the only way out is this song. Not literally, obviously, but you have to kill who you were sometimes. I dunno. Just, thanks for getting out.e
I love this, he's basically telling you about how his music is about exposing his emotions and his darkest feelings, his mental health issues, and it's all out there in his music, the dark and the light that is in all of us to varying degrees. It's the human condition. Genius.
Wow I have a greater appreciation for this song now. I thoroughly enjoyed this reaction and breakdown of some of the concepts and bars. Awesome content!!
I absolutely love this song. As someone who’s also chronically ill and dealing with PTSD from medical providers being dismissive but who could never show anger or outbursts (because it’s inappropriate to take up space or express anything that will cause others discomfort 🙄)…this song is fitting and a perfect outlet for that anger and injustice. I’ve told my partner more than once that I probably like the song far too much 😂😅
In his 1 million-subscriber thank you speech, (I may be paraphrasing lightly) Ren advised those “feeling hate against your fellow man”, to feel that hate/pain, express it, the let it go and find new peace. Seems like he is taking his own advice in this song. He wrote it during his darkest times so then he took that pain, disillusion and frustration and expressed it and created art. I’m in awe.
This song of rens like most requires the context of his mind and experiences at the time of writing each song. This one especially. His message given for this song can show where the mind goes when things go wrong and you just want to snap.
The look on your face at 5:35 and following. 😂😂😂 ….then clutching your pearls at 9:00+. 😂 Haha, the look in your eyes is all of us the first time we heard this song. 😂 “REN!!!” 😂😂😂
I take it to mean kill everything in your head that's holding you back. Most of our anxiety and fear is based on the own powerless we feel over our own minds sometimes - and the masochist part is we revel in dwelling on what causes us mental pain. Kill it, get rid of it - the proverbial "let go..."
Understandable to be taken aback by this at first. Helpfuul it is to know that on Twitch, Ren said that when he wrote Masochist (around 2021 or so) he'd just come out of a "f'kn sh!t situation with the last people I was working with in the music business, so I was angry at everything and I thought I'd write that song (Masochist) and it made me feel better. Obviously it's not literal, I thought that maybe some people who were more religiously inclined might get upset about it but it's all sort of metaphors and it's all like my own journey and my own wrestling with spirituality when your body's been hurting for so many years, so that's where it comes from. It's not like being offensive to be offensive, it comes from a place of doubting your purpose if you're in pain all the time. So that verse comes from there, cause I know some people will probably take it literally, as a face value: 'kill your mother, kill your father'; all that sort of stuff - it's just kind of cursing existing basically cursing the sheer act of beling alive, so in case anyone was wondering, that's why."
A lot of interesting shout outs in this song. First you have references to NWA, their song "Fuck the police" and "Straight outta Compton" Later when he says "I came to bring the pain" that for me sounds like a reference to Method Mans song "Bring the pain" and then when he sings "Hi my Name is" that is clearly a reference to Eminems Song "My Name is" And the first time he mentions the body bags, it looks like the album cover of Ice Cubes album "Death Certificate" from 1991. I don't even think KnoxHill got all these references. I know he missed at least the "Ice Cube" one and the "Method Man" one. But it's okay. In general I am a big fan of Ren and all his references. So many great ones. He mentions Leonhard Cohan and his Song "Halleluja", he mentions Stevie Wonder, Freddy Mercury, Vincent Van Gogh even througout his songs. You don't see that to often with stars. But I guess he can do that, because he is independent. He is great and every new song that comes out, is different. Oh yeah and your reactions are cool too :)
Sadists get pleasure from hurtung others. Masochists get pleasure from hurting themselves - “don’t trip, I’m a MFing masochist” then means don’t worry, I’m only hurting myself (self-destruction). This comes from a place of anger and frustration after years of hurting. Like a lot of people who go through trauma, you can go to some very dark places. Ren used his art as an outlet for those feelings, as many artists do. Like he said in “Hi Ren”, as humans we all have a dark and light inside us.
@@serendipity1237 “trip” in the context of the lyrics means behaving in an irrational or crazy way. I was being polite when I said “don’t worry”, but “don’t freak out” would be closer to its meaning lol
You might not read this and I’ll might not see your response to this if you do, but, I understand this video. I can break it down with 1 example that you can relate to. I am terrified to fly, my wife would totally agree because we’ve flown a few times together. My point is, I had to kill my fear of flying to go on vacation with her and family. Yes, it was hard to do. I regretted killing that part of me to get on the plane, but when I landed, it was sooo worth it. But, after the flight back home, I swear that I’ll never fly again. I’ve said that a few times. Unfortunately it never gets better for me. It’s a step one needs to take to push yourself.
When I first heard this song I didn’t like it. In some ways I was convinced. After a few listens and a few reactions to it I realized I rejected it because it hit too hard. I wasn’t allowed to be angry against those who’d neglected me or those who abused me in the absence of any protector I should have had as a child. I know how to emote every emotion in a healthy way save anger. Especially righteous anger against abusers.
Can relate He really does teach over beats I have felt so ashamed of loosing my temper when hurting Ren is helping to bring the light into a lot of dark places Sometimes it sounds like this 💛💖
He's saying to remove all things you depend on and stand on your own. It's the core tenant of Anarchism, true freedom. We are only responsible for ourselves.
Ren is siiiiiick! This track is such a nasty banger 🔥 Pretty sure the RENegade will follow this pied piper down to the dark depths of his rabbit hole even if he is wielding a knife instead of a pipe 🐰🕳️ 🗡️🐐 🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀 Lucky he has found music as an outlet for all his frustration and anger 😅
Masochism doesn’t have to be sexual. Only freaky people use it that way. Most people use it sarcastically to imply a person is a glutton for punishment by self-sabotage.
Ren’s a killer of beats, lyrics, rapping, metaphors, everything we all love his music for. Some people take life too seriously which in turn means they take even little things too literal and end up offended. 😂 Love the reaction man! ❤
This is exactly what its like to goghrou Dark Night Of The Soul feels like. Kill anything and everything that is hindering you from becoming your true authentic self. Because of that deeper meaning along with the horror film esqu in the wong it has become my favorite
I think the flow of the first 2 lines is a reference to "4 Wheeler" by the 'meme rapper' Yuno Miles. My son just showed me it and I couldn't stop laughing. "Indiana Jones" is ridiculous too. 😂
Ariana grande released 5 new live from London performances to celebrate the 10th anniversary of her first album “Yours Truly” could you please react to those ? 😊❤
I appreciate his artistry and the meaning behind it, BUT given the climate of the world right now the last thing that seems appropriate is a song with “kill” on repeat. I love Ren and his creativity, but I won’t be adding this to any playlists.
