That creatures of habits line. That genuinely hit me, ive recently kicked my antidepressants. After 7 or 8 years, so hard to get off them but i hated being dependent on them. And also the side effects when i didnt have them so i decided to ride it out and deal with the sides effects. "Hard"! Specially with a 3 year old girl dependant on her dad. But coming to your point. Id taken them for so long, not the sideeffects quiting that worried me. We're creatures of habit, change sometimes is a scary thing but im so happy i decided to. Hopefully others can find the strength to also. 🙏

People need to understand that almost EVERYONE has these feelings. I’ve made it to 58 and I’ve had bad days and know that in a day or two I’ll feel better. I am anxious. I am nervous. I believe I am these things because I CARE. Maybe I’m saying too much. I had a hard day at work and now I’m home watching this reaction and it’s hitting me hard.

To me floating chalk outlines means you are walking through life feeling like you're already dead inside.

I can definitely understand what you mean by making your mental illness a habit. When you have been buried in depression, anxiety, or what have you, for long enough, it can almost be a comforting thing to have. It's familiar, and you understand it. You can wrap it around yourself, sink into it, use it as a defensive mechanism. Sometimes it just feels easier to wallow in that feeling, instead of trying to dig yourself out of it. Especially if/when meds can make you feel so empty and numb, walking around like a zombie, like a floating chalk outline. Or at least that has been my experience with severe depression/anxiety.

The raw emotion and chemistry between them brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye EVERY time 💜💜

I absolutely love your perspective. I feel like you are articulating this song for me. I think of one example that might resonate: my best friend had bipolar disorder. She tried everything. She said the medications made her feel flat. She couldn’t get used to how they felt. She’s not with us any longer. She couldn’t get used to… Whatever it is the medication made her feel. I hope this makes sense.

This video sent me down the Chinchilla rabbit hole as well. She does some fun, lighter sounding pop stuff but the lyrics are actually pretty deep. She's a tough girl, not playing around. And her live tracks where she belts out that voice are AMAZING

Chalk outlines were used around the deceased at a crime scene. Thats how interpret the use in this song. Its walking around as a formal version of yourself after taking the meds to "fix" you.

Love your insight. This song is so simply beautiful but impactful. What you said at the end about being trapped; when I first heard this song, I was overwhelmed with empathy in a new way. The light switch flipped on all those lights! My husband's cousin has schizophrenia and HAS to be medicated. We have been married 20 years this October, so I knew him before he was sick. Realizing his best path in life is walking around in a chalk outline...broke my heart in the best way. I now have even more understanding and grace with this new perspective. I really appreciate your openness in this reaction. Ren is one of a kind, but particularly talented at evoking deep, but acutely familiar, emotions. The theme of "masking" through out this song is really powerful to me. "I hope I wake up as someone else", pushing down the feeling of being in the "gallows" on your toes just trying to survive, so you push everything down with a big smile or a pill or a new habit. I relate to the being scared to be OK. It's like you get used to the gallows, you get used to surviving, let alone being OK. Being ok becomes the aberration. Also, being chronically ill, it becomes scary how dependent you become on your medication. It really fucks with your mind because society treats you like mental illness is a character flaw. Even when you know rationally that there is something wrong with your body and something wrong with your brain, and that relying on pills is a sign of weakness. Your message about finding something that works, and it doesn't matter what it is, but that you should stick to it, I really appreciate that.

Hey Tre. Chinchilla is an awesome rabbit hole in her own right. Ren describes her as a musical sibling and remarkably in a moment of boggling synchronicity , it turns out his Mum and her Mum knew each other in college (I have no evidence to verify this, it's just something I read from another Renegade). There are a host of Chinchilla's videos to fall into but I'm going to point you towards 'Fingers' live for Hunger TV and '1:5' live. These are both stunning, although everything she does is pretty much stunning.

I just want to say that not ALL meds make you feel like you’re nothing more than a floating chalk outline. Some can be very helpful, IF THEY ARE GIVEN PROPERLY AND INCLUDE SOME SORT OF TALK THERAPY. Unless you are DSM diagnosed and you are locked into your mental illness that you are either a danger to yourself, or to others, or just locked into your disease. Sometimes there is no cure, just management so that you can participate in life. THIS IS WHY THERAPY IS CRUCIAL WHEN YOU ARE GIVEN PSYCH MEDS! As for Ren, his physical illness was the cause of so much pain : physical, emotional, and psychological. IF he was properly diagnosed and treated early on he likely would have avoided so much unnecessary suffering. THIS IS WHERE THE MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AND COMMUNITY FAILED REN AND SO MANY OF US❤

That's the beauty of art and it's to the viewer or listeners own perception. You perceive it as being trapped but it can also mean being the walking dead as chalk outlines also resembles chalk outlines at a death/crime scene.

Floating chalk outlines... Medications (or emotions) can numb are person until they feel nothing and are simply going through the motions, functioning but feeling dead inside. Based on some things you have shared about medicine, I imagine you understand this feeling. I'm living your reactions and your vulnerability as well. Chinchilla is a great side quest to the Ren rabbit hole. Her solo stuff, id go with Fingers (live) and 1:5 (Live). That said, "How to be Me" with Ren & Chinchilla is an excellent segue into Suic*de, which you put on your Ren rabbit hole journey already. I'd follow up Suic*de with For Joe, as the outro of Suic*de is the intro to For Joe... And I say side quest, but she is absolutely a rabbit hole of her own.
