Rurouni Kenshin (also known as Rurouni Kenshin: Origins in North America) is a 2012 Japanese period action-adventure film based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. Directed by Keishi Ōtomo, the film stars Takeru Satoh and Emi Takei. It focuses on events that take place during the early Meiji era in Japan, telling the story of a wanderer named Himura Kenshin, formerly known as the assassin Hitokiri Battōsai. After participating in the Bakumatsu war, Kenshin wanders the countryside of Japan offering protection and aid to those in need as atonement for the murders he once committed.
Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno is a 2014 Japanese film based on the manga series of the same name, and serves as the second installment of the Rurouni Kenshin film series', following the first film Rurouni Kenshin (2012). The film was followed by a direct sequel, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, which takes place immediately from the ending of Kyoto Inferno.
The film was shot in a variety of locations around Japan, including Tokyo, Kyoto, Nagano, Ibaraki, and Kanagawa. Over 5000 extras were hired for the production, and filming wrapped on December 27, 2013.
Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends is a 2014 Japanese jidaigeki action film directed by Keishi Ōtomo and based on the manga series Rurouni Kenshin. It serves as a direct sequel to Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (2014), taking place immediately after as Kenshin recovers following losing Kaoru at sea.
Otomo said the final fight scene was the most difficult scene to shoot, mainly due to how Satoh and Fujiwara did not use stunts. Nevertheless, the director found it as an "epic" scene.
Rurouni Kenshin: The Final is a 2021 Japanese live-action film based on the manga series of the same name by Nobuhiro Watsuki serving as the fourth installment of the Rurouni Kenshin film series following Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (2014). The film adapts the manga series' final arc, though some story elements differ. The film was produced simultaneously alongside the film series' fifth and final installment Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning, which serves as a direct prequel to The Final, with flashback scenes being taken from The Beginning. Like previous movies, it was directed and written by Keishi Otomo. The movie is licensed by Netflix.
The movie was well received in the box office to the point it was one of the highest-grossing films in 2021. Critics praised the narrative focused on Kenshin's quest for redemption and his rivalry with the menacing Enishi. Although the plot has several changes to the original manga, it was noted to be true to the source's themes. The performances of Satoh and Mackenyu were praised, as were the choreographed fight scenes.
Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning is a 2021 Japanese live-action film based upon the manga series of the same name. It is the fifth and final installment of the Rurouni Kenshin film series and serves as a prequel, depicting Himura Kenshin's origins as the assassin "Hitokiri Battōsai", while exploring his relationship with the woman named Yukishiro Tomoe. As the film was produced simultaneously alongside Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, events in the former are directly referenced in the latter, with Tomoe's brother Enishi appearing due to events that transpired in The Beginning. Director Otomo explained: "The goal for me was to portray the humanity and drama of the characters within the fight scenes and action. "The action sequences weren't just action, but rather an important factor in portraying the characters. That is why the main cast, including Takeru, performed almost all of the action sequences without stunt doubles." He added: "I always take acting scenes in one sequence without cuts, and the action scenes in this film were basically shot with the same approach." The director added that while it might be "difficult" for his cast to do the stunts themselves he felt it made the action scenes "more emotional" as a result.
Takeru Satoh has portrayed the character of Kenshin Himura since 2012, and has been doing all his own stunts since he first took on the role. Kenshin is an expert in "Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu," a sword technique that allows the fighter to attack multiple assailants at once. And, keeping in line with the source material, Satoh is regularly put up against multiple actors that he has to fend off through a series of intricately detailed moves in all five films. Embodying his samurai character, Satoh reportedly spent weeks perfecting the sword fights with choreographers, going through the moves multiple times both in and out of costume in a studio before heading out on set.
