Renault Captur e-tech? Get a Zoe | Plug Life Television episode 31

Recently, Go Ultra Low asked Twitter for its opinions on Renault's new Captur e-tech plug-in hybrid crossover, so I decided to compare the tech specs with the all-electric Renault Zoe supermini. Which car has more boot space, which car is taller, which car can charge its battery the quickest, and crucially, which car is cheaper? Surely the big, rugged crossover with a smaller battery would win out in all of those categories vs the small EV with the big, expensive battery?
In a comparison that surprised even me, it turns out that Zoe is bigger, more practical and cheaper than you might think.

We have been saying for years the capture isn't bigger 🤣 It's that image the media gives that makes people think they are getting a bigger car. Great video

Aye, I was looking at the weights of the Zoe and the Kona and there is only 100kgs or so between them. It does have a rep as a super mini but has hidden bulk

We did exactly what you suggest, buying our first Leaf in December 2017 from Jonathan Porterfield, picking it up in Aberdeen and driving it to Edinburgh that day. Wonderful introduction to EVs and problem-free.

That's a very interesting comparison. With the CCS option the Zoe wins hands-down.

Totally agree with your baptism of fire approach. Other than a 15 min test drive, I live in Manchester but picked my car up from Newcastle. First drive on my own started at 6pm in the dark and rain for a 150 mile journey home.

I live in Bristol but got my #28 Ioniq from Edinburgh and drove it home. I was an ex LEAF driver so I wasn't new to EV's but it was my first time with a CCS car. I've since driven to Austria in my Ioniq so yes, a great touring car. A great video showing that people are buying style rather than practicality.

I have driven with a ZE40 Zoé for over 3 years now and I have recently changed it for an Opel Corsa-e. It is a nice car but I have had some bad experiences that made me turn away the Zoé. One of those experiences was the following: I was driving down to a local supermarket (which offered free charging which is handy if you can't charge at home like me) on a winters day and I arrived there with about 25-30%. Those chargers are 22kw but due to the cold I expected slightly less then 22 to be going into the battery. When I turned on the dongle however, it showed me only 8kw...

Anyone catching this that lives in Glasgow or is passing should swing by the Arnold Clark Innovation centre. I’ve got a leaf and took parents down to see all the models. Great advice, know their stuff, they have hybrids too. Can’t sell you them though, there are there to get your bum in the seat and impartial to brands.
@PlugLifeTelevision

Very true, Arnold Clark have done an excellent job with the Innovation Centre. Great to see such a genuine effort to educate the public. I should stress, however, that with falling battery prices and ever-improving range of EVs, there are very few reasons to buy a hybrid. Get an EV and thank me later.

This is a good comparison but I think the reason for PHEV is to help people convert and understand EV's better.

Excellent analysis. Shame on Renault for bringing the "Captur e-tech plug-in hybrid crossover" to market instead of more full EVs. Er... I mean... it's a shame Renault is bringing the "Captur e-tech plug-in hybrid crossover" to market.

I had a Zoe for three years and the boot space was surprising (picked two friends up from the airport once with two large cases plus hand luggage and it all fitted in the boot just fine). I liked the EV experience but if I am honest regretted buying the Zoe from the start because I had a convertible for ten years prior to that and missed it so much that I am back to petrol again (8 year old SLK that cost be £2400 less than I got for my 2017 Zoe from a dealer). It is a heck of a faff buying fuel compared with plugging in at home it has to be said.

Think of the planet and dump the SLK.
@robsmith1a
@robsmith1a 3 года назад
@@wobby1516 I figure my Zoe is still being used by someone else and the SLK would still be on the road too whether I bought it or not. If I bought a new EV that would be an initial load of carbon produced in making it too (especially if we start scrapping perfectly usable cars to do it). If it became viable I would convert the SLK to an EV but given that I live in the flight path in Farnborough and I watch private jets flying in and out all day I find it a bit hard to feel too guilty about my own modest emissions (low mileage driver). The last year made me realise it is also important to have some fun and I'm afraid my Zoe wasn't particularly fun (though the newer ones are better in that respect).

Can't wait to actually get 50KW! - I seem to only pull 22 from rapids - so kinda annoyed i paid extra for CCS! However it is nice to be able to move over to a 22KW post (or AC wand on a triple head charger) when someone with a 7KW only AC car (which is most others) needs to use the CCS. And vice Versa. Also another vote for DSG - Will was great when i got my last Zoe from him - I got the train from Wales I was that impressed! He picked me up in his personal Kona

It’s surprising how one can be mislead by the advertising. I’ve always thought of the Zoe as a small city car.. still for now I’ll stick with my E Nero. Love the spec but not the price of the new Hyundai Electric car would be very interested in your thoughts on it.

The IONIQ5's tech is mightily impressive, especially the vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, i.e. a 3 kW domestic socket on the dashboard and a 3 kW domestic socket adapter that you can plug into the car's Type 2 charging port, that allow you to run camping stoves, heaters, power tools etc off the battery. Proper zombie apocalypse survival stuff. Unfortunately, the car is unnecessarily huge - it's bigger than a Tesla Model S! If it had LEAF or Golf-sized proportions, it would have been a real winner.

@@PlugLifeTelevision Horses for courses, you can’t tow with a leaf or e golf. Caravaners would find this a perfect car, all be it a bit pricey. Perhaps when we sell our Motorhome if we move to a caravan we might go for it. In the meantime our E Niro is great.

@@PlugLifeTelevision Love your channel! According to automobiledimension.com IONIQ 5 is 7 cm narrower than Tesla Model S and 33 cm shorter. IONIQ 5 is also 14 cm taller but I would still say Model S is "bigger".
@PlugLifeTelevision
@PlugLifeTelevision 3 года назад
@@synthdrummer Ah, I may have been thinking of the wheelbase of the IONIQ5 vs the Model S. It's still a massive car with dimensions that cause issues on narrow European roads. There's nothing stopping a Golf-sized EV from being able to tow and having as many features as the Ioniq 5 (for starters, the much smaller Honda e also has a built-in domestic power outlet, albeit rated at 1.5 kW).

Missing from your comparison is that Zoe servicing is about a third the price of an IC car and road tax is zero...

i'm still confused. Under what circumstances should you charge your EV DAILY and under what you shouldn't. If daily charging keeps the battery at around 100% all the time and the battery never goes under 90%
@kinross24

....and unless a PHEV can do over 70miles on full ev with less than 50g/km of Co2 on petrol engine, of which none are so the Kadjar won’t get the extra £3000 grant where the Zoe will.

Is it ppssible to get a DC fast charger for home? Specifically if you have solar.
@PlugLifeTelevision
@PlugLifeTelevision 3 года назад
It's rare, partly due to the expense of DC chargers, partly due to the expense of 3-phase grid connections to run them at high power, and partly because some Distribution Network Operators won't formally agree to them being installed on their part of the National Grid yet. There are some CHAdeMO vehicle-to-grid home chargers on the market, but these cost several thousand pounds and tend to max out at 7kW to 10kW. I'm unaware of any home chargers that can take a DC feed directly from solar and deliver it to the car via CHAdeMO or CCS.

If Renault brought the Zoe to North America, it would crush the Bolt.
@PlugLifeTelevision
@PlugLifeTelevision 3 года назад
Good point. Previously it hadn't been brought to North America because it was equipped with Type 2 only so wouldn't be able to rapid charge since North America only does CHAdeMO, CCS and Type 1. Now that the new Zoe has CCS, that issue has been resolved. However, North America's lack of Type 2 charge points means that the Zoe's party piece - 22kW destination charging via the onboard charger - wouldn't be fully utilised, as it would be restricted to the power limitations of Type 1.
@daemoncan2364
@daemoncan2364 3 года назад
@@PlugLifeTelevision Indeed. While we do have intermediate level CCS chargers here in NA (Bosch-DCFC-el-52240), most businesses will balk at the idea of outlaying 11K USD plus provisioning costs (at least for the time being). These units seem to be installed exclusively at auto dealerships (mandated by the manufacturer).

Interesting review, but for balance you could mention the range of the Captur when running on petrol (about 400 miles at a guess).
@PlugLifeTelevision
@PlugLifeTelevision 3 года назад
Good point. If I recall correctly, the Captur e-tech's petrol tank is 39 litres, which at 54mpg works out at around 460 miles. However, the Zoe's 200+ mile range means the driver will need to stop before the car does. 54mpg is not groundbreaking fuel economy by any means, so for any moderately long journeys, any supposed fuel savings of the Captur e-tech are wiped out, whereas the Zoe keeps on saving money. The Zoe will easily save many hundreds of pounds per year in fuel alone, quite possibly over a thousand pounds per year depending on annual mileage and electricity costs.

Who but an idiot would drive non stop in the U.K. for 400 miles? Although having said that, I met a guy towing a caravan in Spain who was driving home non stop ? like I said only an idiot. As Ewan says one needs a pee, tea stop and that’s a charger stop, plus huge savings on fuel, as well as doing ones bit to reduce the horrendous pollution made by car exhaust.

All electric vehicles are just better. No noise, no emissions, less fuel costs, less maintenance costs. Gasoline and diesel are OLD polluting technology. So last century. Hydrogen is a waste of time and money. Electric cars, electric trucks, electric buses, electric trash haulers, electric snow blowers, electric lawn mowers, electric snow mobiles, electric water craft, electric garden tools, electric mechanic tools, electric motor cycles, electric bicycles, electric scooters, electric farm tractors, electric construction equipment, electric delivery vehicles, ...... everything is going electric. No worries about starting after sitting for a few months. Gas always needs repairs.
