In this weeks video, I managed to get my hands on the wicked Renault Clio 200 RS Cup. A car that I have admired for many years due to it's handling brilliance and intoxicating engine note. This is why I believe this car is the best Hot Hatch you can buy for under £5,000.

Now I know this a Clio 200 and I may have got some of the figures wrong ie. 0-60 time... It's actually 6.6 and not 6.9secs. But my general message behind this video is that both the 197/200 cup are bargains!

Sorry but it’s not 197 bhp it’s 197 ps. Which is 0.986 of a hp. I know this because I have on and Ktec racing told me when I had my car mapped

Yeah definitely bargains but the Clio 200 would still struggle to keep up with my ole 182 cup and the 197 wouldn’t especially with its cocked up gearing.

So as it turns out I actually bought the exact car in the video a few months ago ( same number plate ) and I can honestly agree with everything this guy is saying. Love the car, just a bit surprised to see it on RU-vid haha

i remember being on a 197 years ago as passanger and absolutley fell in love with it. Now, years later and 32yo, im actually thinking of getting one!!!

☺️🙌 Do it! just make sure the gearbox doesn't crunch in any of the gears and full service history (including cambelt/waterpump) and you'll be fine.

At 72 years of age, I bought my Clio RS 200 AGP Ltd Edn , 2011 build amd only 31 in Australia. Now 81.5 yearsold; the most perfect car ever, after a few old SH British bombs, 2 out of 3 unreliable BMW’s, 2 very reliable Hondas. All my cars have been manuals! Only drove automatics courtesy of Avis! My Renault is the last of the naturally aspirated 6 speed manuals, and yes, Have had it on some small amateur tracks a few times. Wonderful car, very safe, hifi sound system in my AGP model is amazing! No complaints! Vive le France! Nick Marshall Sydney, Australia

Hello and thanks for nice video. Damn you can have 197/200 cheap there in U.K. I live in Finland and our 197 prices start from 9000euros. I am proud owner for 70.000miles driven 2-owner mint condition ultra red 197. Great little cars.

Interesting note on the gearbox some talk over on the forums atm that the synchros might not actually be the issue but clutch drag. Either way for anyone buying these check the gearbox, make sure cambelt, water pump and preferably dephaser pulley done, check manifold flexi’s and callipers.

I had a 197 till recently (fiesta st now) never felt slow really and always fun if you ignored the jarring ride and 24mpg

Yeah, that's the beauty of n/a engine's there's no real lag! In terms of mpg we'll it's a hot hatch so it's sort of expected really, you don't really buy a hot hatch with the intention of commuting 100 miles a day...

24 mpg is barely 10 liters / 100 km which is a very good consumption. My Clio 3 1.4 98hp gets that mpg...

Had mine 10 years now. Just reached 40k fully maintained never had a issue. Great little toy. [ 200cup ]

@@Krosis_ 11 years just reached 42k and had gearbox rebuild [ 3rd gear ]. there known to go around 40k. a well looked after one.

I bought an 08 197RS about a week ago. I've loved Renaults psychotic approach to hatches since dad showed me the 5 turbo in the 80s so to finally have one in a1 mechanical condition is life goal stuff. It's amazing. Everything I dreamed it would be. If you're considering one and the logbooks are good, do it. Just ask Harry Metcalf. ;-)

Both very good competent cars, although I would say the clip edges it slightly due to its brilliant chassis and is definitely more track focused than the Abarth 500

How'd you rate this against your JCW Clubman Josh? I'm running a Clubby just now, but I might still have the Clio itch to scratch.

Hi Mike, the Clio feels raw, agile and more fun whereas the Clubman is refined and more of a quick estate than a hothatch. However, Mini's are very tuneable thanks to them being turbocharged you can get close to 300bhp with a few simple mods.

Because this one has very low mileage and a rebuilt gearbox. I was talking about Clio 197/200 in general, you can pick a tidy one up for about £4k.

Yeah, it's just the gearboxes on them that have issues. If you can get one with a megane engine conversion they are incredible!

My last quick car was a 280 hp Focus St which I sold last year I was out looking for an old 350z but fuel and road tax is a joke so now drawn to maybe a late one of these renault clio it will only be used as a weekend toy and something to lightly modify can I get away with this being 48 and unable to grow up lol

There is no way u can buy one for this money 10k€ is what u need to just find a good one and they are getting rare. I recently bought one and the feeling of driving never was more "pure" for me.

Not for a decent 197, they are about £6000 if not a bit less for a real nice one. Better still get one with a Renault Megane 225 engine in it! They are incredibly enjoying and rewarding to drive

Getting any sort of real power out of an NA engine is going to cost you a lot money but your options are Throttle bodies, turbo route or sticking a Renault Megane 225 engine in it.
