In this live demo on stage at KiCon 2019, Greg Davill shows how to utilize Fusion 360 and Blender in combination with KiCad 5.1 to create realistic renderings.
About the speaker:
Greg began tinkering with electronics once he could crawl. He designed his own circuits and firmware for PICAXE controllers in BASIC through primary school and continued to prototype a portable media player for a High School Project. He is passionate about embedded design and microcontroller firmware.
KiCon 2019 was a conference for people who use and love KiCad. For more information: kicad-kicon.com

When I export as .wrl file and import into blender 2.81 it just has lots of errors and only about 10% of the components show up, the board and traces just aren't there. This happens both with or without the "Plain PCB (no copper or silk)" selected. Does anyone know how to fix this?

my take from that talk is that blender is hard to use

The script cant find the module 'pcbnew' on Mac OS X. Brilliant talk - exactly what I needed but shame about the script. I will tinker a bit more and post results.

Can we export 3d step PCB design from kicad with blender ?

At 14:23, he had 'Plain PCB (no copper or silk) selected, which then forced him to do all the fancy texturing stuff. If you leave this box unchecked, it exports all your copper layers, making it just one file to import, and eliminating the alignment process.

There was a question about it at 24:27. It actually has advantages and disadvantages (you are not getting additional layer you can tweak with material settings, etc).

@@ellox Thanks for pointing that out. I've used it in the past and I'm pretty sure it adopts the colors you choose in the 3d viewer, so there's a good bit of customization, but not as much as something like Blender.

You can watch 100 blender videos you will not be able to design with it. Learning by doing!

My method for getting renders is KiCad -> FreeCad -> SOLIDWORKS -> SOLIDWORKS Visualize It generates stunning renders and is way easier to use than Blender. You can even skip the SOLIDWORKS part and import the Step file directly to Visualize, but I use SOLIDWORKS tweak or add things to the 3D model. imgur.com/gallery/FjTBX2V
