Thank you for keeping Rama looking like it was described in the novel. I actually have an intense fear of this ever being filmed because, just like with mini series based on Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, the director will make changes or even add things that will ruin it for me. It is one thing if the author is still alive to say ok or not ok to changes, like when they filmed 2010 Odyssey Two. Clarke was there throughout the pre-production, filming and post-production. Now that he is gone and there is no family or estate to keep changes from being made, I am frightened of what a director may try to do.

I agree. It's also interesting that the Rama design aesthetic shows up in Star Trek: The Voyage Home and in Dune.
@blackbelt2000

I read that Denis Villeneuve is supposed to direct the Rama movie. Considering what he has done with his interpretation of the Dune movie then I would feel that Rama is in good hands with him. I read in the article that he is a huge fan of the Rama novel so that is a good starting point for any adaptation.
@cytherians

@@blackbelt2000 Great news! Yes, I think Villeneuve did a fabulous job on the new Dune reinterpretation, better than what I was expecting. So, a fine choice for Rama.

I’ve read the original Foundation trilogy twice and loved that along with the Apple TV+. I would recommend listening to the Foundation podcast where the director explains why the changes were made, and how his father told him as a kid to read it and he loves the novels too but said it was unfilmable as it was in that nobody would want to watch the novel direct to screen. I’ve watched it twice and think it’s stunning. It keeps very strongly to the spirit of the books, changes them yes but all films are “based on books”, something is always changed. It’s how they’re changed and why that I think makes the difference.

About '2001 A Space Odyssey', Stanley Kubrick said: "I don’t like to talk about 2001 too much because it’s essentially a non-verbal experience. It attempts to communicate more to the subconscious and to the feelings than it does to the intellect. I think clearly there’s a problem with people who are not paying attention with their eyes. They’re listening. And they don’t get much from listening to this film. Those who won’t believe their eyes won’t be able to appreciate this film." Hopefully a similar treatment can be made for 'Rendezvouz with Rama'. Don't explain too much, leave the viewer free to think about what has been seen.

Great job! This captures most of the spirit of the book in a short sequence. Not everything matched my mental image of Rama, but each person's book "imaginary" is different. PS: "In literary criticism, the word “imaginary” is used as a noun to mean a collective picture of an era derived from books, films, television, and so on" - Mike Christie, 2015.

Hell they could do that with 2001 and 2010. Before people yell sacrilege hear this out. It will never happen but Ive been thinking about it for a while, just take out the years 2001 and 2010 and keep just the titles to make them timeless. You could make the Earth scenes seem futuristic enough to always seem like its anywhere from 20 to 50 to maybe 100 years in the future like Interstellar did, and at the end of the filming for "A Space Odyssey" be absolutely sure to film ALL the scenes needed for "The Year We Make Contact" involving Dr. Floyd encountering Dave in the Discovery. -They act the scene out in advance with the _young_ Dave Bowman character during the space odyssey filing, wait a number of years for the "Dr. Floyd" actor to age a little, then dig up the old Dave footage from years before and pop it in the new series 10 years later with the older Heywood Floyd. The actor could watch himself from the last series to brush up on the character and make it seamless, as if hes right there talking to Dave, which would be a very crucial moment tying it all together. I would also like to see Dr. Floyd age in the very same actor instead of two different actors like we got before. The whole movie could focus on Dr. Heywood Floyd a little more so than the originals and explore every angle that couldn't be shown in a 2+ hour movie making it much less confusing for so many. As long as nothing is over-embellished and the world they live in looks like the future but still something we can all relate too it should still work! Keir Dulla could cameo playing another memorable character in old age like one of the guys in a nice suit in the Clavius moon base meeting or something, maybe hes the Clavius administrator?! LOL Even a comic adaptation would suffice.

You kind of have to change a lot or come up with a creative explanation why they don't have certain techs or other limitations. Personally I would prefer something like a Rama inspired story done as a mini series. Keep the stuff that works and re-imagine what doesn't. Open with a forward explaining the move. I can see one way an faithful version to the book could be made. Use Unreal engine and do the whole thing in CGI with meta people, Morgan Freeman could narrate or be the voice of Norton, he owns the rights last I heard. Would be a great way show powerful the engine really is, push to go a life like as they can.
