100% renewable energy - El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, wants to be the world's first island to cover its energy needs without fossil fuels. Even so, 60% of its electricity still comes from its conventional generating station.

It still went from 100 percent fossil fuels to just about 40 percent. So it's already saving a lot of CO2 and they are probably well on their way to meet paris climate goals. That may not have been the plan, but as explained they weren't able to build the storage basin as large as they would have needed.

Given the trade winds, it seems like the wind turbines are a good idea there. I'd have done a mix of the turbines and also solar power and batteries. Regardless, we have to wean ourselves off of fossil fuels if we want to end the energy crisis. As I write this, the Iberian Pen]ninsula has just endured temperatures well above 40 or even 47 C. My own home town in the US is on fire right now. I have time to post here because my business is shut down and I'm evacuated from my home by a historically big, climate crisis fueled fire.

DW has long had an ax to grind when it comes to renewables. Even though it tries to hide it behind a thin veneer of feigned objectivity.

Why don’t that add solar panels on roof tops and floating panels on both lakes n then sum Tesla batteries

7.500 people and the project cost was 85 million Euros. So, 11.300 € per capita. In other words: a family of four 45.000€. It is ridiculous

Malcolm T At least there is less diesel being used, and when there is no longer anymore diesel, this energy system may be what provides electricity?
