Renouncing US citizenship is an irreversible process and should be considered carefully. I renounced my US citizenship in 2023 and I do not regret it.

I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, l'd suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so l hired an expert advisor for aid, and following him advice, I poured $10k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 43k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

My advice to everyone is this: If you want to grow big this year, especially in your finances, be willing to take risks. Saving is great, but taking risks puts you on a pedestal where you wouldn’t have to worry about saving like you do now. Thanks to Lee David, my portfolio is doing very well and I’m proud of the decisions I made last year.

If you have your money in cash then yes...but if it's more than $2mill in like stocks, real estate ect...then they will charge you. Basically keep the money is cold hard cash until you file the paperwork to renounce. There is still a little $2,000 fee but that's nothing. Just talk to a lawyer they'll help you get the cost down.

@@RicherThanIeverbeen Technically they wouldn't. BUT check out Roger Ver's case. It took them 7-10 years or something to find out that he claimed to have less than $2M but had well over it. Now they are going after him. It's normal for the USA to overstep its bounds.

In addition to other answers you can gift assets to your wife or form a trust and gift to that trust. Gifting has limits. Best to speak to a professional about this.

I got my Mexican permanent residency by having a Mexican daughter and I can get my citizenship in 2 years but was hoping to renounce before then. Since I’d have a higher tier passport like Mexico in 2 years , do you think just getting the cheapest and fastest option like Vanuatu for the purpose of renouncing would be okay? Would prefer to save the 100k over a Caribbean one since Mexico would give basically the same access once I have it.

@@RicherThanIeverbeen canadians have an exit tax tho. and all assets are considered sold the day we leave and we pay taxes on them on the way out even if you did not actually sell the assets.

Just a suggestion. You can work to get out your tax system & once you do, you live abroad while still reaping the benefits of your passport. But to my knowledge, renouncing won’t automatically exclude you from Canadian taxes if you’re sourcing income there or you’ve exceeded the minimum stay requirements that qualifies you as a tax resident. However take everything I told you with a grain of salt & seek legal advice, I’m just a guy on the internet.

The renouncing doesn't seem that hard unless you are a "covered" citizen. Renouncing before someone applies a 40% capital gains tax becomes "law".

No. You can't. I have Canadian citizenship and I don't pay taxes there. Like if you live there you will need to pay taxes to get a care card. and a Drivers licence. I know a person on a long term family visa that still neads to pay taxes.
