Renovating an Abandoned Resort: The Wall 

Hey matt. I built 21 underground complexes in the last 11 years . PLEASE READ . You need to reinforce the inside with a welded roll cage type skeleton support inside the conex box . Then use gravel and playground sand around the box once in place in the ground before burying it. Plz research it. I seen a few that collapsed before they called us in.

Matt; the sidewalls WILL cave in without interal/external crossbraces. This happens all the time in prepper/bunker construction; it's thin corrugated metal. All the strength of a container is in it's vertical end posts; everything else about the container is weak. 4 inches of top dirt... probably fine. The 45 degrees of side sand is tens of thousands of lbs, and will put bow your walls in.

You should mark left and right lateral limits of your range. I know its common sense not to shoot too far left or right but this should cover you in case of an incident

A suggestion for marking your zones of fire on the range, put telephone poles on each end to mark the do not shoot points, and paint them a bright red or some other bright color.

Matt, you really need to throw grass seed all over that berm. The grass will root and make a solid mass with the dirt, preventing it from erosion over time. You can already see the erosion cracks at the top of the berm.

You should put a large/higher pole than the telephone poles, then put an unnecessarily big desperado ranch flag (or desperado range) that's up year round. Think that would make a perfect final touch before the grass

Matt. I was a member of Unaka gun club in Johnson City, Tennessee. Now we are living in Bandera . We’re Looking for a good target range. I looks like you’re going to have a great Range. Our shooting area had concrete floor, with a covered roof, concrete tables to shoot from. In front of the shooting line About 20’ out . there was a wall place in front of shooting station Telephone poles were placed every 12 ‘. The wall started at 10’ up. To protect a wild shot from going over berm(?) We had a cliff about 100’ to 125’ or more that we shot into. It is a great range. Ray

Yes definitely support that roof I used to work on ship containers striping the paint off repairing and repainting them for resale and they definitely aren't strong enough for that much weight in center of roof ... I weigh 130 lbs and everyone flexed in the middle with my tiny butt better be safe than sorry

My local range planted a bunch of fast growing trees on their berm. Took a few years but now they have a 30ft wall that may not be as dense as solid wood but does alright

You should make special t shirts that only the guests for the eclipse get

Matt you should seed the burm with low growing deep-rooted plants to keep it from eroding away but the plants are small enough you can still get on top of it if needs be

its cute when he cleans a surface for stick welding. Matt, it is literally one of the biggest advantages of stick over mig aside from the portability, you can literally weld through foam AND dirt, its FINE, REALLY.

It might be nice to put some storm shelters somewhere on your resort eventually in case of tornadoes what with you being in tornado alley. It's always places that have campers and stuff that are the most dangerous during tornadoes due campers not being sturdy.

Matt you have to see if the range berm bunker storage will stop a 50 cal. For science and safety it must be tested

Matt you have lots of wood from taking down buildings. Support the inside of the Container with a frame on top of the shelves from the wood.

you need a giant DESPERADO letters on top of that berm. like the hollywood sign. Make it a national landmark!

You really should reinforce them.. the only weight they can carry is that of another shipping container because they have strong corners. Anything other than the corner pillars cant take much more than a spray of saltwater

Man ot would be sharp to be able to build a small old west town out at the range. A saloon for hydration, an old general store for ammo , targets and safety. And of course a sheriff's office for the out of handers!

If you can't get your hands on a lot of rec poles, you could use old shot tractor tires filled with dirt stacked on top of each other to extend the berm. You definitely wouldn't be able to get them as high, but I feel like you could stack them 6 ft high and fill them with dirt and they would be solid.

U should probably put some kind of moisture barrier between the trailer and the dirt to stop it from rusting out to fast moisture in the dirt and now holding water especially around your new welds will rust out exceedingly fast just a little food for thought.

For welding the real thin stuff to thick stuff focus most of your heat on the thick side and let just the edge of your puddle hit the thin

I work in a major port loading and unloading those boxes on and off of ships. The sides and top are not structural or load bearing at all. They dent and give easily and peel back like aluminum foil.

Matt, seeing how many new old roofs you just bought, you should check out "Through the roof" sealant. It will literally setup under water. It's so good we made a boat out of cardboard and covered it with it. My kids played on the boat for 3 weeks and never sank it

@13:47 Even though I'm in Georgia we call that a "Texas Hot Wrench"! I weld and I've gone through some REALLY thick steel with one. And yes, it IS hard to weld thinner and thicker metal together!

Good stuff. U should have stuck them in the ground cantilevering a bit over the range and stick 2 behind them holding them up with post tension cables

Mate, you just welded mild steel to cortan steel, it will rust out in under a year even without being covered by dirt.

Matt, shipping containers are not built to carry load on the walls or roof. The entire load carrying capacity is on the corners. That’s how they can be stacked so high. But it’s okay, you’re a millionaire, what does it matter if you need to buy another connex container anyway.

Matt; couple of ideas. 1 make a tee shirt about the ranch and the eclipse and ONLY available for the people that go. sub idea, include one shirt with a purchase of a spot. 2 extend your 2 x 4 shelf supports up to the roof to help support even more and maybe the upper shelves side to side as well to give a touch of extra support for the walls.

Giant gaps in between the telephonepoles. If he really wanted to make it safe, it should be two rows, so a pole is behind/infront of the gaps

Cover the top with eternabond. It is the permanent version of flex seal. Used for mobile home roofing.

Matt, You need to put some Erosion Control Blankets on your berms so they have grass start growing on it to keep the dirt from washing off from those downpours here in central texas.

I enjoy watching cut with a acetylene torch on angle. I cut holes in diesel tanks for dewatering pumps. Seen many fire balls shoots up 8ft atleast out of the fill neck

I'd spray the front side of the telephone poles with several coatings of light colored Rhino truck bed lining. It would seal the gaps between the poles, provide a substance that will catch and hold bullets, and make bullet hits visible.
