For any wheelchair user - these are outstanding safety pointers that must be observed before you rent or drive someone else's car. Very beneficial stuff !
I like your vids. Good to see someone else helping out others in our situations. I recently started doing vids also to inform and inspire... Good stuff Brian!..Steve
So happy you made another video. I'm traveling next month and planning on renting a car and they only offered right side hand controls which I'm not familiar with. I'm planning on taking my portables as I learnt from your earlier videos of you driving your wifes car. Thanks a lot buddy and enjoy your trip.
great video 👍 one more thing i used to do when renting a car is to check the bolts every morning before i start my trip because sometimes it gets slightly loose . by the way thanks again for introducing me to this type of portable hand controls (( colours)).

Thanks for your inspirational videos and this one in particular -- helped me a LOT in fulfilling a couple of my dreams while visiting US. Namely seeing the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. Unfortunately on 4 wheels, not 2, but a convertible Mustang is kinda closer to 2 wheels (sort of). Thank you very much for your informative and inspirational videos!
Ha, fuck portable, those are the hand controls I use every day. They've lasted me a decade already and are still going strong. You can pop them off your car at the airport, chuck them in your bag and slap them on the rental when you land. I can say enough good stuff about those hand controls. They just take a little long to get on... but what am I bitching about? I've spent four hours waiting for a rental car company to install the hand controls, I could have done it in three minutes if I'd brought my own.
Public service announcement If you are in Finland. The Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi) dictates that all cars are to be inspected by Vehicle Inspection facilities once a year. In the Vehicles registration certificate, there must be stated that the car is inspected and approved to drive with hand controls.
This is great info, I'm going to be test driving a Camaro within the next couple days, I definitely am going to make sure the accelerator doesn't get stuck after hearing that... Lol
Brian, do you mind if I share this video on my FB page? It's got great info and I think would be helpful. I'm still able to use my feet at this point and still walking although it's getting harder. I'm struggling with the fear of falling and may have to go to a chair for mobility in the future. Todd BTW, Todd Register on FB in Port Orange, FL if you want to look me up.
You're such an amazing person. I cant believe it. your wife is very, very lucky. I always tell my fiance that if anything happened to him I would still be with him no matter what. I've been with him 5 and a half years since I was 16. we have 2 sons. ones an angel and one has had 3 open heart surgeries so far. but you just inspire me to do so much although there's nothing "wrong" with me, although nothing is wrong with you either because you do everything I do.
Thanks for the comment! I'm glad your son has been able to get through his surgeries. I'm glad I inspire you! There's so much we can do as long as we try. :)
Paralyzed Living - No problem. You seem like such a sweet guy. Your wife is very lucky to have someone like you. I fell in love with the way you are, like how you don't let ANYTHING stop you. You honestly do a lot of things I don't do!
Yeah, that must have sucked when you got in an accident with that rental car. I've had that too, with the gas peddle. But i immediatly turned off the engine so i could brake and prevent from being in an accident. That was before i was paralyzed, though. I don't drive for over a year now. It's quite difficult to get any help in my situation. If you wanna know more you can always search me on facebook. Just write Paul Luyten and you'll see a profile pic of me in my wheelchair. I have searched you but i can't find you. Have a great trip... 👍
Brian, another great video. I've gotten a little long in the tooth and have recently switched to a power chair......my arms and shoulders just can't get me around the way they used to. So I have also switched to a van. Any info or renting accessible vans with hand controls? I see a lot of rental ramp vans, but none with hand controls.

I've used permanent hand controls in the past. Colours portable hand controls cost a fraction of the permanent ones and are easy to install. Are they safe to use every day?
I would not use portable hand controls . I have in the past and felt so unsafe . Not worth it .what he said I feel totally opposite about and yes the ones that may come in the equip rental cars may be different but not as dangerous as portable . But what works for him may work for you but not for the next guy enjoy
good video, don't really like how the gas is settup for those hand controls but hey as a c6 with poor hand dexterity I learned cruise control is a cripples best friend
in Maryland they want me to pay someone else to put permanent handcontrols on my vehicle which starts at 2500 then take three adaptive driving classes that start at 300 per class, my license is only expired so I don't know why I have to do all of this extra stuff I can't even afford!
I had to take adaptive driving courses too but I don't remember them being that expensive. I agree with the comments below that you should be able to find cheaper controls. $2500 seems steep.
Okay, guess I have some shopping around to do then, but my rehab is still to high plus I had went to my mva and pass all my test and when I went in to pay for my license they said that I gotta do all this extra stuff that I even ask about prior to even going down to the mva and they said no just take the test!
I had expanded the hole where the gas pedal rod goes through the brake rod but it's not necessary. I know others that use them as is with their right hand.
That's actually a great idea. I had to take a basic driver's education course again proving that I knew how to drive with hand controls. I believe it was three or four sessions before I could go take a test to get my license. The rehab center I went to had a modified car that I was able to use for my test. I had to do a maneuverability test and a driving test to get my license to use hand controls.
@@ParalyzedLiving Hi Brian, can you shoot a video on road test for a driver license. Any tips you have. Will be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, from, PaulLaw.
