January must be sewing room update month. Have watched several vloggers refreshing their room, I'm currently refreshing mine and just basically trying to make 2024 sewing more organized. Anyway, here in the US it is popular to turn antique treadle bases into makeup tables. Actually also saw one holding a small TV. They are such pretty pieces of furniture don't think you will have a difficult time finding it a good home. Loved your vlog!
Love the new space. Recently moved everything out of my sewing room and stood in my empty space just to determine the best use of the natural light. Decided I need to get shelving up around the room. Good luck ❤
What a wonderful space. I sort of chuckled, Sorry, but I’m just glad I’m not the only one with a lot of stuff. I have been destashing my room also and it has made me feel so good. I think when we accumulate too much stuff it upsets us before we realize it. I got rid of about 100 old patterns and lots of old fabric. I use a touch machine for labeling my boxes, it does help. Anyway, your new space is so special and I love that you made your cutting table smaller, I did that to mine too. Mine is like yours where it just out into the room. I have to walk around it. Love your space.
Thanks for the tour of your sewing space! It’s lovely to see how similar our spaces are, but also get ideas for improving our own. I’m also doing a major reorg of my space trying to create more open floor-it helps mentally and makes it more welcoming. For fabric I switched from billy bookcases to tall wire mesh drawers (so I didn’t have to fold every time I put fabric back 😅) We’ll see how it works out! I have a projector so that means I have a cutting table that rolls. And. So. Much. Stuff. Good luck on your reorganization journey!
Happy to see someone else who has stockpiled supplies like me! I brought so much back from Midfle East when I worked there, told myself that it would save me money when I got home as I wouldn't need to buy any more supplies.... and in the 8 years I've been home I've added even more to my stash 😅😅😅 but the good news is you will use it eventually (or so I tell myself!) Love your reorganisation.... now you've inspired me to start on mine!
In the beginning where you are wearing different items of clothing-can you tell me what pattern you used where you are outside a restaurant with chairs outside?? Love love all your videos
Sell the table … this is where I’m at atm because people will use them to make tables like bathroom sinks etc….…. I love patterns on a destash I have 27 of those white containers holding my big 4 patterns. I found when I put the knife fork and spoon tray in my drawers it made it easier to actually sort it better The desks by the windows look lovely and bright. I put my trims in plastic zip lock bags. Loving your nails 💅
I have been watching your channel for a long time so have seen all your sewing room updates (I think) and could instantly see this is a real improvement. The room looks more spacious and lighter, I bet it will be much nicer to work in. Thank you for sharing 😊
Sewing rooms are always a work in process. I’m constantly changing things around and decluttering and destashing. It’s amazing how much we collect 😅. Just got my room reorganized and I feel so much lighter! It good to go through your things and get rid of things no longer used. Pace yourself and enjoy the process 😊. You’re doing great 👍. Thank you for sharing! Your friend Diane ❤
Amazing to see all your stuff. You could open a haberdashery shop 😊. It’s such a lovely feeling when you have had a good sort out, bet you are chuffed and I’m sure you will enjoy your sewing much more 😊❤
Your space looks brill Rachel. I'm not so lucky to have a sewing room but I've been sorting my stuff out as well. It does make you feel good and I'm sure helps us get on with projects in a better frame of mind. I can't wait to see your space when It's finished.
Pleased you’re feeling less stressed sorting out your sewing space. I think I need to clear out my haberdashery stash - I have loads of buttons inherited from family members and I will never use them all and loads of other bits and pieces. I keep thinking, they might be just what I’m looking for but really I think I’m just storing them. Perhaps time to let go and have a good clear out. X
Oh, I would love your sewing space it's fabulous, hopefully I will be transferring mine to the conservatory soon 😊 During your pattern destash if you have the hug hoodie, please give me a shout as I am looking for one 😊👍
I really enjoyed this, thank you! I live in a 36ft 5th Wheel with my small dog. I'm considering taking out the bed and the lift mechanism for it and making the bedroom my sewing/craft room. I have a comfortable couch that I can make more comfortable and use as a bed in the Living Room (lounge). Not sure when or if this will happen but I'm excited about it.
Love your video you got so many stuff. Just wondering do you know the width, height and length of your cutting table. I thinking of getting a new cutting table and where do you get the boxes from with the lids to store your hasperdery item like your zips
Blimmey! what a lot of stuff! Mind you I think I have more ribbon etc than you. lol. I dont have much fabric as I try to only buy with a project in mind. No wonder you were getting stressed in the room. Good luck with the rest of it. I have a very small sewing room and this week thought I would like a book shelf for all my sewing books in there. My husband is trying to come up with a plan to rearrange the room. I only have plastic under bed boxes and plastic drawer sets for storage apart from reusing gift boxes . I do have a fold up table but never fold it up. Its a tight squeeze. lol. I love my room though I didnt think I would go upstairs to sew but I do more sewing now I dont have to put things away all the time. Cant wait to see yours when its finished and hope it helps your sewjo. xxx
Hello Rachel It must be spring coming soon Giving the sewing room a good sort out organizing I have also cleaned and organized my sewing room I have to have a tidy sewing space I also am lucky to have a sewing room I call it "my happy place " I think that you are right about the treadle cabinet it is taking to much space and the units put over there looks like a better place for more storage Having all your notions sorted is huge it reminds us of what we have and taking a look before we buy something that we have forgotten about I wish that I was your neighbor I live in rural Saskatchewan Canada 🇨🇦 and its a hour to a fabric store I would be in heaven to have a sewing friend near who might have a zip or something that I am needing close by lol I have a little to stash. I always buy with projects in mind . Winter I like to have the material and notions in case of snow storms and cold weather I can see that this has rebooted your love for sewing You will enjoy it Happy sewing 🪡 🧵 ✂️ 👗♥️ Take care
You’re going a really good job on your sewing room. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I know that this is a job I need to do in mine. However I dread it and I’m still trying to sew in there but it’s hard. You have inspired me though 😊
Your sewing space looks really inviting now, thank you for the tour. I am lucky enough to have my own sewing room, built as an extension to our home, with a separate entrance. it's 12'6"x16', so a good size, but I have several hobbies, lots of machines, and very little storage. I have also overflowed into the garage conversion, to my shame. All the storage , bar a large Kallax unit, came from my previous sewing area and is not making the best use of the space. I have lots of large Really Useful boxes containing patterns, fabrics, stabilisers etc, which are always in the way, and it could all be improved. I have sorted my dressmaking fabrics and destashed patterns recently, donated some fabrics that I'm no longer in love with, made a start on my scraps, and sorted ribbons, buttons, and bindings/pipings. My lace box is next, but I'd really rather sew than sort out! However, it won't get better until I do sort it out and it will then become much easier to clean.I am currently looking for some storage for my pdf patterns, which are in A4 plastic wallets.
Your sewing space is looking really good. I recently sorted out my sewing stuff and invested in a NIIMBOT label maker and found it so useful so I don’t have to go through everything to find bits I’m looking for. They seem to stick to anything. It may seem a bit OTT but it’s made life so easy.
I’m fortunate enough to have a small bedroom as my sewing space but it also doubles as a little home gym which was its original purpose. Last year as my sewing has grown I needed to have a sort out and get myself better organised and needed storage (thank goodness for IKEA 😂). I sorted it all out and it’s a lovely space which works well for both my hobbies. I have a cutting/working table which folds away against a wall which I do when my friend and I are using it as a gym. When it’s in sewing mode and just me I can leave my table up (I have enough room not to have to fold it away when I’m using as a gym). My weights live underneath the table so are completely out of the way and it only takes about 5 mins to move it from table up/down. Anyway the point of this is that it is so much nicer to work in now it’s all sorted out. I’m sure you’ll love your sewing space it even more when you’ve completed the job. 😊
Hi Rachel. Good progress! One thing that always springs to mind when you do a sewing vlog is wardrobes. I would put floor to ceiling wardrobes all with shelves. We moved, and I installed 3 built in wardrobes, which 1 I use just for sewing and knitting. I do not have as much fabric as you have, I wouldn't know what to do with them all, but I have plenty. They are really pricey, but maybe you can look into Ikea ones? You would not have a lot of visual chaos and having plain doors would make the room really calm and dust free as well. LOVE your sewing space!
I would love to see a sewer do a video that said look I used everything I had!!! 😅not sure why it seems to be the goal to have so much that it only gets de stashed at a later date
Your vlogging space is so much lighter, love good declutter/shuffle around. I attached my threadholder on the wall with those 3m tabs it's full and not fallen down yet 😂
Hi Rachel. Where did you get your 'zip on a roll' from? In particular the stripey taped ones. Have you got any recommendations for companies to purchase bag making hardware too please? 😊
Thank you for sharing. You've inspired me to have a sort out of my sewing space(s). Have you thought about making some 'mob cap' covers for your lidless baskets to protect contents from dust?
You've inspired me to go through all my bins and bags of stuff cluttering up my sewing room....off to the thrift store they go.... There's a thrift store in my neighborhood where I've met several costume makers standing in line at the checkout at different times that hopefully can use it, that make this particular thrift store on their thrifty route. As well as a high school that has a great drama program that make their costumes and dance stuff as part of their program for the students..... I'll never use it.
I think it's great that you've managed to make such a difference with minimal cost. I love the jumper your wearing,is it made or rtw? Why not use all your beyond the pink door boxes for storage? I know you've used one for buttons but your trims, zips etc., could also be stored and stacked. Loved your white lace trims. Would you, please,be able to show me how you add the pulls to the continual zips and shorten your zips?
Well now I know where to go when I need some cool zipper tape. 🙂 You have quite the collection. I have an IKEA trolly cart and I roll it under my ironing table. It has all the things I need for pressing (pressing ham, sleeve roll, spray bottles, iron cleaner, pressing cloth, etc.) I love having all of that stuff together right where I need it. I actually have three of those carts for different purposes. Thank you for sharing your room with us. It is fun to see how different people organize their sewing studios.
While daunting, it is fun to reorganize our studios. I did this at the beginning of Novmber. Rediscovered things I'd forgotten about. The only thing that was funny was that I had moved things around to where I thought they made sense.....at the time. A couple of times I've spent a 1/2 hr trying to remember where I had moved things LOL. I loved how tidy and open everything felt that I didn't go do any sewing for nearly 2 weeks......I didn't want to mess it up LOL.
I'm always rearranging my sewing room. I'll be moving in with my oldest daughter the end of summer, so will have to get my new sewing area set up there.
Why not use your Treadle table as a piece of furniture somewhere in your house. I have one and it sits in our dining room as a small sideboard. Great conversation piece over dinner with guests.
Hi Rachel! I loved this video, and your sewing room is looking amazing! (Mine is an absolute tip!! 😳) I can recommend the Closet Core free pattern for the overlocker cover, and apologies if you're way ahead of me on that one! Lynne 🤩
Hi Rachel I love how your sewing space is turning out. I highly recommend the machine covers. I recently redid my sewing space and made covers for all my machines. I even upholstered my chairs in matching fabric. I recommend you use foam interfacing. This tutorial is wonderful and it is the one I followed ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G-BhU_-tDW8.htmlsi=1xKJKxJzexvxVoEl My covers turned out great.
Brilliant work Rachel, it looks fantastic! I'll be keeping an eye on your destash, some gorgeous fabrics in that pile. I do like where you usually sit because your fabrics in the background are so pretty (as are you, of course!) Good luck with the new bathroom x
What a marathon event. I’d just give Isaac a tent for when he comes home! Re zips, how on earth do you attach two pulls- I managed to get one one but the second refused to slide one. That was for a Sandhill sling ,so have just used a single pull on all the three I made. What a wonderful supply of everything you have.
It is nice having your sewing space in such a light place with so many windows while still being in middle of family life! I like the setup and what is developing. I just recently did some reorganization of my pdf pattern storage in furniture-like lateral file drawers that I put in my library/ office: neat and functional. There are extra shelves besides the tops that I can use for office files, my books, and light. It has helped me to think in terms of primary, secondary, and tertiary work and storage spaces. I keep primary tools and fabrics nearest my actual sewing space, then move things out from there, depending on areas where I can store the secondary and tertiary things (tubs and shelves!). Best wishes for the continued process!
Looking good. Tis great being so close to the kitchen isn't it? Duck in for a quick cuppa, baste dinner, back to sew, very convenient. For your storage needs think about a kitchen island bench. They are usually a better height for cutting out and have lots of built in storage. I found mine second hand and will never voluntarily go back to anything else. Love, love, love, my island bench, even though it is huge.
I have a suggestion!! 😊 I have a small sewing room and I learned to “go up”! I put shelving all around the room approximately 12” down from the ceiling. I have a step stool but a library ladder would make easy access to the shelves…all of the those baskets of haberdashery will fit neatly up there!! It’s all things that you don’t need to access very often and this leaves you with tons of floor space to work in.
Watching this video made me feel so good. I thought I had too much stuff and have been rehoming, donating, using up things making gifts, and I am down to one enclosed wardrobe and a small book shelf, and my sewing table of course, with my machine on it. I am jubilant.
Love your new sewing room lovely to have all the windows. I have a small sewing room love being in there but my window faces my neighbours brick wall so the light isn't great, both of my children have moved out so have 2 spare rooms I'm so tempted to move my sewing room upstairs if I can persuade hubby to let me 😅
Hi Rach, it's coming along nicely. For the habidashery items why not separate in to clear, sealable, food bags in various sizes. That way you can also see at a glance what's in the bag 😊 x
The purple heart buttons will be cute for your granddaughter when she gets a little bigger. You've got a wonderful space and lots of things you can make.
I love a good sort out and reshuffle and although I haven’t got as big a space as you,it’s so nice to have it all organised. I have a horn cabinet and shut it when not in use, but it’s so easy to open and start sewing. Then having all things together makes life easier and you feel very organised. Good luck with the rest of the room ❤
Hi Rachel, love your top you are wearing, may I ask what pattern and size you have made? It must feel so good being organised in your sewing room! Exactly what I need to do….I have bought 4 lockers to stash fabric etc just need to buy some core board to wrap fabric on so I can stand up….
