My Monterey Park (CA-29) congressman was George E. Brown Jr. (1963-1971). He voted against the fake LBJ "Gulf of Tonkin" resolution that got us sucked into the civil wars of Vietnam , Cambodia , and Laos. He was the only dude to do that. Then while i is at Berkeley , Ron Dellums is my congressman (CA-13) for 26 years ..... he always be hounding the criminality of our incursion into Vietnam. There were more back then that spoke up but one by one they became bribes and all left in disgrace over the years. I wrote opinion pieces for my university newspaper back then, and I opposed both wars, fighting both Republicans and Democrats. The "you're either with us or against us" mentality was so bad that the College Republicans reported me to the FBI, and I had one evening where a black car with federal plates and heavily tented windows followed me as I drove in circles around the block to annoy them. I'm just glad voices like Barbara Lee weren't silenced back then.

Sadly nobody won in this situation except the Taliban. There are no victory laps to be had. When Bush sent our military in, back when this country was unified, I don’t think his plan was to still be there 20 years later. A case can be made for why we shouldn’t have gone into Iraq, but at the time, Afghanistan was the right call. A case could be made that trying to convert an ancient civilization that is so different than us into a democracy was a fool’s errand. It did provide 20 years of relative peace and opportunities to children and women that they didn’t have before. It’s a shame after all the resources it couldn’t be sustained.

The 1942 USDA film *Hemp For Victory* was filmed in Kentucky from where Mitch McConnell directs Congressional Republicans to stifle any Federal Cannabis reform, while simultaneously bragging on the campaign trail about his hemp farming bill. The solution is obvious: make the 1942 USDA film *Hemp For Victory* go viral so that midwestern Conservatives and coastal Progressives alike can legally be growing Cannabis Sativa again to support our police and military, replace foreign imports, bring manufacturing jobs back from overseas, defund the war on drugs, reduce pollution, replace fossil fuels, end deforestation and stop climate change. Barbra Lee for President

Walter Cronkite had retired before 9/11 from news reporting. He was very often referred to as 'the most trusted man in America.' After 9/11 he had many interviews in which he noted his opinion that going to war, under the circumstances at that time, were ill-advised. Then many commentators and politicians referred to his view as un-American. Bill Maher himself, as the host of Politically Incorrect, was inundated with calls for his firing for similar statements. At one point his show had lost all of its sponsors. The overwhelming response to anyone who disagreed with this decision by congress and the President was pure anger and hatred.

"Dont make choices in the moment of grief and crisis." That is one of the statements that keeps gun legislation on the sidelines. She is right though. In regard to the invasion of Afghanistan; some thoughts before actions would have been nice. Clearer to look back on though I guess. After serving the US Army in Iraq and Afghanistan I can say I'm really feeling weird about moving forward. Politicians from either side of the aisle can get fucked. But the ones on the right can get extra fucked.

While I agree that the last 20 years in Afghanistan were a damaging waste of lives, time, resources, that was almost certainly doomed to failure from the start, but I've yet to hear anyone articulate what should've been done instead in the wake of 9/11. It's not like they could've just done nothing. A softer response like sanctions wouldn't have had an effect, would've been seen as weakness, and may have encouraged more attacks. A first-rank power can't just accept having 3000 civilians killed and not respond.

@@JK192837 Fully occupying the country put them (Bin Laden and his gang) into deep retreat and cover, with assistance from all the citizens who lost relatives in the carpet-bombings (there would have been thousands of citizens who lost family in the American bombings of their city. Great terrorist recruitment tool, that carpet-bombing). It took 10 years BECAUSE you fully occupied the country in this spectacular manner. Hence, Bin Laden was found in PAKISTAN, not Afghanistan. And you did not invade Pakistan, did you?

This was painful to watch. It's full of "outcome fallacy": because Afghanistan was a democratic failure then... (it could have never succeeded under any circumstances, no other country could succeed to become a democracy, we should have never gone). The outcome is not a universal truth you can extrapolate as a universal rule. Al quaeda needed to be destroyed and the Taliban punished. The problem was leaving Afghanistan since the US knew the Taliban was waiting to come back. That's the only part that was an f up in this 20 year story.

Ok. Let's say USA never invaded Afghanistan and never removed the taliban regime that supported Al Qaeda. Why would or what would make Al Qaeda stop with the attacks? They would think. "This is pretty nice. We use violence and they don't do anything about it" I think she is pretty awesome to have the balls to voice her opinion when everyone was blinded by rage but what was her alternative? Not doing anything or just "talk about it with the talibans". Before the 9/11 attacks what did USA do to Afghanistan except help them get rid of the Russians and still they gave sanctuary's to terrorist groups and openly hated the western ideals? If they just kept to themselves 9/11 would have not happened and war in Afghanistan & Iraq would have not happened.

This wasn’t about the decision to withdrawn our troops and fellow Americans. It was about the absolutely insane way we did it which endangered lives. It will be interesting what Austin, Kirby, Blinken and Milley have to say under oath to Congress in the near future. I have my doubts any of them will take one for the team. But I’m certain they will be invited to many DC cocktail parties

Pulling out of Afghanistan was correct, the execution was disastrous. Allies were not warned and left scrambling. Advice from allies was not heeded, sending the message that the US likes allies to follow (if they don't, French fries become freedom fries), but really doesn't give a crap about their point of view or their wellbeing. The pullout was done in the middle of the fighting season instead of winter when the fighting stops. People who helped the US and other members of the coalition were abandoned to be slaughtered by the Taliban. Tons of military equipment were abandoned to the Taliban. I will not remember Joe Biden fondly even though I supported him before this mess.
