This is very informative. I was quoted 10 hours of labor to replace my 2010 Silverado dash. Thanks to this video I’m confident that with w few purchased tools and a trip to the junkyard, I can replace my dashboard myself. Thank you!

I had an unfortunate situation where I took my 2012 Silverado 2500HD to the dealer for a recall airbag replacement. They cracked the dash in the process and are denying it. I got them to pay for the new dash parts, but there is no way I'm letting them touch my truck again as I'm sure more would get broken. Even though I am a trade pro (Plumbing/HVAC) I was reluctant to attempt this install myself. I was so relieved when I found your video! And you appear to be working on my exact truck! I've watched countless "how to videos" on various topics and I have to say this is hands down the best one I've ever seen! Your thorough bolt by bolt, piece by piece explanation, and superb editing of time consuming repetitive stuff was perfect for watchability. I am now fully confident that I can do this job. Well Done Sir! I will be subscribing!....I may even take this opportunity to upgrade my radio to a modern info center!

It’s known that GMC/Chevy make cheap plastic parts. Is there anything you can recommend to layer on top of the dash once you have replaced it, to be able to extend the life of it? Any type of acrylic coating or perhaps a vinyl over-lay?
@DGG-xw1wj
@DGG-xw1wj 2 года назад
Great instructions. I’m planning to take mine out and get it wrapped in vinyl. Is it possible I can still connect the speedometer and the passenger airbag so it’s still drivable and won’t have any lights come on?

True but depending on how brittle the plastic is you can save most of them. It they start to crack when removing the screws then it best to just replace it.

@@JJBanuelos That particular material is going to fall apart. It breaks down in UV. I did same repair years ago....it was strong but the material was weak..it cracked in another place. I used that sticky back soundproof type mat on the underside to keep it from crumbling. I also made a front windshield dash cover part out of 1/8 plywood, as the plastic part once again just fell apart as you are picking it up. You had it out(the hard part)...Should have replaced it with newer one. Your video was great....It's all about the material that GM used that year.....I still own my 07 Burb 285,000 miles

My take on the cracking dashes in all of these gm trucks and suvs is brittle cheap plastic and dead space underneath the dash. My dash only has 2 small cracks in the normal weak spots. Can the dead space be filled somehow?
@JJBanuelos
@JJBanuelos 2 года назад
Not to sure how much that would help honestly. The small crack the usually forms by the passenger airbag is supports from the bottom with a metal brace & it still cracks.
@johndoerger2733
@johndoerger2733 2 года назад
@@JJBanuelos thanks for the reply. Good to know about the support there. I just know that when I lightly press on the dash there's so much downward movement that no wonder it cracks, from vibration or pressure on it. I thought about reinforcing the cracks with a plastic welder, jb plastic weld or silicone the larger cracked dash to the smaller front dash.

Good job, unfortunately the repair is temporary as the material and the dash itself is the problem. You can continue to do this for the life of the dash as you are not addressing the real issue. An aftermarket dash pad is what is needed that will stand the test of time, not just a cap, but the dash itself and a OEM replacement is no better as you will right back here in no time, its a faulty product.

Great work on your channel for the first time and I have subscribed for the tahoe with a little bit different dashboard for the center or radio surround your going to need some kind of plastic prybars and you might Crack it with them but they have 7 clips and the paper thin trim is very tight so if you don't know how it is attached watch video or I go to the junkyard and see one that has already been ripped apart and you can see how it is fastened

Yeah that actual looks pretty good considering GM is asking $1000 for a 11-18 year old truck dash. $1000!!!!! For just that one part. No trim, no sensors, no screws, just 3lb of plastic. If you haven’t lost chunks of the dash this is your best options.

Nice job sir. I am not able to to do a project like this myself because of poor eyesight. Wondering if you have time to work on my 2011 Suburban. Don’t have much confidence in the Chevy dealership here in Atlanta. Will like to follow up if this is possible. Best video I have seen on You Tube. Thanks.

My 2009 Tahoe dash is cracked beyond repair, looks like a replacement job for me. That looks like I would have an extra screw or two left over. Good job.

@@JJBanuelos i appreciate the reply. i’ve been debating if this was something i could do when i got off work one day. im busy 7 days a week and i’ve been putting off this repair for my truck. i’ve done little bits and pieces of dash work (radio, airbag (takata recall), hvac) in the past but never pulled it completely before. but if it’s something i could do in a 4 hour time frame i’m game to order everything i need.

Hey, man get job on the video instructions and professional attitude. Love watching videos like this. What do you use to protect the dashboards after repair?
@JJBanuelos
@JJBanuelos 3 года назад
Thanks! Not much you can really do to protect these but adding a windshield sun shade will help from sun exposure.

Obviously with different dash styles and different damage on each dash. How much do you usually charge for a job like that roughly? If you don't mind a stranger asking.
@JJBanuelos
@JJBanuelos 3 года назад
It depends really but somewhere around $150-200 for a job like this.

You have obviously seen a bunch of bad videos on repairs, because you learned how not to do them. WELL DONE VIDEO!. Comments were spot on, detailed just enough to get the point across. THis will take most of use a few hours but you are well versed in this job. Thanks for sharing.

This is great bro. My dash is pretty borked from a heater core and sound system install I had done a few years ago. I always wanted to fix it, but it seemed so intimidating. Now I feel lie I can do this myself as it doesn't seem that difficult to do

Incredible ease of which you handled this repair. How much should i expect to pay for this repair by a professional. How do you compare this to a dash board skin?
@JJBanuelos
@JJBanuelos 3 года назад
Thanks, a professional will usually charge by how much the job pays to remove & install the dash which is 4hrs times the time for the repair so it may vary. I usually just charge a flat rate which can vary on the number or cracks. The dash board skins are ugly & don’t make it look any better, just my opinion.
