A video in which I cut a large (4.25" diameter) soundhole (the Half Tony) in a 70's D-35, thereby increasing the treble and mid-range, and horrifying collectors everywhere, most of whom will declare that I've "destroyed" the value of the guitar. If the owner's happy, I"m happy.

I'm glad to say that I did it exactly the way Bryan did with the exception of how long it took me. I worked slowly with the dremel, but I don't have the experience that Bryan has. My job turned out well enough. It's blended well enough so that it doesn't look obvious & you have to look very closely to see any evidence that anything has been done, so.......... I'm happy with it. As for the collectors, let them howl all they want to. They're just looking for reasons to cut down sellers prices on good guitars so they can buy them cheaper. Most collectors don't even know how to play & their desperation is what has caused the ridiculous prices in some areas of the instrument market. The banjo market is specifically one of the worst. Collectors & some "so-called experts" in Nashville have made it really hard for the real players (who are usually poor) to enjoy & afford higher end instruments & parts. Thank you Bryan for being down to Earth & keeping it real!!!!

Over the years, I have heard people talking about Kimsifing a guitar. It always intrigued me. I was excited to see that you have videos that show us what you do with guitars. I love watching the videos. I especially enjoy the before and after videos. Thank you for taking the time to let us see your work.

I like that I've seen a jig saw used and wondered how it doesn't shake all the braces loose. This is much more gentle to the guitar.

A jig saw would scare me to death!! I don't know how they did that w/out ripping spruce up.

I asked my local lutheir to enlarge the soundhole on my authentic and he threatened to punch me lol. Im strongly considering it. Any advice for me other than "DONT DO IT"
@Bryankimsey
@Bryankimsey 3 года назад
It's your guitar, not his. An Authentic is a $5000 guitar roughly. I spend that much racing dirt bikes every year and never see a dime of it back. To some, that's a lot of money (and it IS a lot of money). To some people a guitar is a sacred icon. To others, a tool. You decide.

@@Bryankimsey thanks for the advice. I'm torn right now because I want a brighter more open sound but I also have no real luthier skill. Someone offered me this to trade for my authentic www.soundpure.com/p/bourgeois-d-lsh-at-adirondack-mahogany-7275-used/27062#lg=1&slide=8 It already has a large soundhole so it might be a safer bet. I've never played a guitar with a 1 23/32 nut before though. I'm worried it might be a bit cramped compared to the 1 3/4. So my choices as an amateur are 1. Modify my martin and possibly ruin it or 2. Trade the martin for a Bourgeois D-LSH (which I've never played before. Hmmm
@Bryankimsey
@Bryankimsey 3 года назад
Bourgeois will have a totally different feel and sound. I'd consider it if you both can have an approval period.

Hello bryan supposin you've done manyier guitars with the enlarged soundhole treatment, do you have any regrets enlarging to a half tony just wondering before i take the leap into it! Thanks buddy
@Bryankimsey
@Bryankimsey 3 года назад
Never, BUT I choose the candidate carefully. I look for a bassy guitar that needs trebles and mids. I wouldn't do it to an already very bright and trebly guitar. With any mod, you have to ask... "What does this guitar need?" and then choose the mod. Like I say in the video (?), make a soundhole blocker and then make the "soundhole" in that larger and larger and see if you like the way the sound is going.

Why remove popsicle brace? Thanks
@Bryankimsey
@Bryankimsey Год назад
1) it increases the treble response from the open B string up (see link). 2) www.bryankimsey.com/popsicle/ 3) Pre- 39 authentic and Authentics (and Collings CW, Bourgeois, Proulx, etc, etc) don't have them. If you want to push your guitar in that direction, you need to do everything you can. 4) You don't HAVE to. It's just an option.

Question, Bryan - how do you do it when the neck's not removed (which you may be doing on mine soon...)?
@Bryankimsey
@Bryankimsey 5 лет назад
Exactly the same way. To get the area under the fingerboard, I pull the rosette and it'll all come out except the "ledge". I might have to use a spatula to help, but it'll come out. Then it's just a matter of sanding with the still piece of sandpaper.

I'd love to watch a video of you doing it this way, I have been considering this on my D18 and certainly do not have the skill level to pull and reset the neck

All right then! I had wondered how that was done. Looks easier than I would have expected but I will probably not take the chance of screwing up any of my guitars...for now at least. Thank you.

How about making a metal template and using a router?
@Bryankimsey
@Bryankimsey 5 лет назад
Go for it. I do just fine this way but you have to do it however you're comfortable.

@@Bryankimsey after watching your video I can see its probably easier the way your doing it. It seems a bit tedious. Great job.
@Bryankimsey
@Bryankimsey 5 лет назад
It's not tedious because I only do 1-3/year. It took... 15 minutes ... start to finish and that's with me talking. I'm not sure I could get a router template set up any faster and I'd have to check it 100x to make sure it was centered and not gonna move. How would I clamp it or keep it from moving on the top? Clamps? Tape? Each one of those is just another thing that could go wrong or create its own set of potential problems. The Dremel is quick, easy, controllable for me.

@@Bryankimsey you got a point with that. You did a great job with it.

When the Dremel came on? I need to investigate lowering the volume for some sections. I'm using Windows Live Movie Maker and I'm not sure if it'll do that or not. I'll see and maybe repost the video.
