Today on The Railway Room, I'm attempting to repair an original 1960s AHM Minitrains narrow gauge Baldwin 0-4-0ST. This H0n30/H0e scale loco was popular with 009 modellers at the time, although the mechanism isn't up to modern standards and many of these locos are now non-runners with split gears. Thankfully, the gears from the Tenshodo motor bogie turn out to be a good replacement with a suitable shaft adaptor so I have a go at making the repairs to an example that has been in my work pile for a while. At the same time, I replace the motor with a modern coreless example.

Thank you, I was rather making it up as I went (otherwise I'd have oiled layshaft before putting the wheels back on!) but thankfully it all came good in the end!

What a great video. Having been given most of a Minitrix N205 with all it's wheelsets out a few weeks ago I carried out searches on how to put them back in but came up with absolutely zilch on the Internet 😂. I found it had to believe that I was the first person to have this predicament on a model loco of any gauge. I have had discussions with a few modellers. Your video shows how to do it very clearly. Many thanks. 🎉

Thank you very much! I've got a few of those minitrix chassis and the valve gear can make them rather tricky to get back together. I found minitrix.org.uk very helpful. I'd seen a couple of people mention the Tenshodo gears for this Minitrains loco but couldn't find any concrete info, so thought I'd try and fix that!

I think that you'll find that it's hesitatent and nodding up and down as it runs because the quartering is slightly out creating a tight spot. When you I did a similar job I used a bent paper clip to fit in the holes on the wheel to rotate the wheels on the shaft to fine tune. Good video though 😊

Ah, that's a great tip thanks! I think it could probably use a little bit of fettling to fine tune it

Ha ha ! Excellent video. I saw 29 mins and thought we might be in for a bit of a trauma, but it all went smoothly, and no cut fingers. I bet it all took you a bit longer than 29 mins though . . . . I was also wondering about quartering if that driveshaft only had the one worm - or matching the gears to the worms if there were two worms, without getting the coupling rods a bit askew having glued the new gears onto the axles, but it all went swimmingly. Those coreless motors are good aren't they.

Thank you, I think it took about 3 years altogether! I'm surprised how smoothly it went in the end though and did have visions of quartering turning into a nightmare. With the wheels friction fit in the axles it's not too hard to make little adjustments. I suspect that the rods are designed to be looser and more forgiving than on the prototypes since the gears take care of the power transmission and the rods are just along for the ride. I'm pretty happy with the coreless motor, but it's still a bit of a coffee grinder chassis anyway!

@FortheLoveofSteam I think the coffee grinder effect is caused by the bodywork rather than the motion. maybe some rubber pads between the chassis and the body would help?.

Ah, that's an interesting thought. It was very noisy without the body though, so perhaps it's related to the weight? I might have to do some investigating...
