Repairing a 1984 Sony Trinitron KV-2670R

I picked this TV up from a condo straight out of the '80s a few weeks back. Like Miami Vice '80s! It was awesome. The TV did work for a few minutes when I got it home, but the picture quickly began to distort just before the vertical collapsed. I unplugged it and let it sit for a few weeks until I was ready to make the repair video. At that time, it would no longer get a picture or sound. I could here it get power and the sleep lamp on the front would come on, but I never got snow or static. I resolved that issue by replacing several capacitors, but once it began to power up again, the vertical collapse issue appeared to be intermittent. This failure was traced to the Vertical Deflection area of the board. Although I never saw exactly where the cold solder was, after reflowing the solder in that area, the failure was resolved. Now the tv functions and looks great!
I do not recommend you working on your own tv without an understanding of the potential risks involved.

Hey Matt, I'm a big fan of the early Betamax players. I was a teenager in 1975. Graduated high school. I have bought a 7200 Betamax the first stand alone one that I wanted back in the day. But It cost over a thousand dollars back them. I have it now with the clock timer. I am just wanting a couple of the original blank tape to go with it. K30 or K60. I seen you had a big box of them. Would I be able to purchase one or two from you. I can't find them anywhere. It would make my collection complete. Please, Please consider. I will pay top dollar for them. Thanks, Your video's are awesome...Gary

Do you know how to remove small scratches or a graze on the glass of a crt TVs?

Given how many were bad and how relatively few there are, I'd just replace them all, that thing is beautiful, but opening it up to repair it all the time with that long thin neck and giant neck board would make me nervous. Never seen the inside of a CRT TV so clean.
@shodan6401

@rwdplz1 Yes. Exactly. Who gets elbow deep into a 40 year old piece of kit just to do the absolute bare minimum service. Lacks all sense, knowledge and wisdom. Very sad for such a beautiful set in such amazing condition. I genuinely can't watch people who work like this. I care about quality and appreciate the pieces that I am fortunate enough to have and work on. This goes against everything that I was taught and how I was raised, and how I worked professionally, both at Xerox and at Kodak. When I encountered people who did the minimum at work, let's just say that they did not like me, and a few were actually shown the door.

You really should do a full recap of the board, and the Neck Board. All of those caps are 40 years old. It makes no sense, once you're already in there, to just find the bad caps. Because others will also fail, in a week, a month, a year, etc. It's fortunate that there are relatively few caps compared to newer sets. So why just do minimal repairs when, for a small investment, you could have this performing flawlessly for decades to come? It makes zero sense when I see people do this. So sad for this beautiful television. Just recap the damn thing. No logic at all. Maybe someone else will buy it and give it the tiny extra effort that it deserves to make sure it's reliable, and prevents any future damage that could ruin it permanently...
@shodan6401
@shodan6401 Месяц назад
You are not a serious tech. Anyone who works on vintage gear, audio - video - PC, and who already has a unit taken apart for service, starts with a recap at the very least. 40 year old polyprope caps - they have to go. If you can't do everything, then the power circuit, the neck board, any place that gets hot or handles high voltage. That's basic. Something you figure out in your first couple of months. After all the times you've had to go back and repair something that you've already finished. Because something else went bad. So you start with a recap from the get-go. Then typically you reflow the solder also in the sections that get hot. Again, basic, day one service. Then, once you know that all of those things are good, if you still have an issue, you are starting from a good foundation. So much easier if it ends up that there was some bad resistor you had to track down. Then I see spots on the board with really old flux, or more likely, corrosion. That's going to slowly eat through the board and cause some short. Not cleaned. Not addressed. Just left to ruin a vintage TV (ten years away from Antique) that is both beautiful, and currently in beautiful condition. I've seen some of Adrian's Braindead Basement, and he does the same thing. If he could replace a cap with a wire and a piece of tape, he would. I can't watch that guy. He's obsessed with vintage kit - but he doesn't CARE about it. I think he really cares about clicks and sponsors. Does he have sponsors? I have no idea. But if you genuinely care about any vintage kit, then you walk up to that nice assortment of caps that you have, and you pull out everything that's on the board. Every important circuit at minimum. And whatever you don't have, you order. That's how you know that you genuinely appreciate this amazing old tech. Not by scraping by with the absolute minimum that you can get away with just to get it running. I wouldn't do that with a vintage car. Definitely not with some vintage audio. Nor with a vintage PC. And I wouldn't do it with this gorgeous television. I'm glad you rescued it. If you rescue a neglected dog, you don't just bring it home and give it a new blanket. You feed it, wash it. Give it a comb and a cut. Buy it a new collar. So even though this TV is safe, it's sad to see that it hasn't been cared for. Maybe you're just starting out, so I'm hoping that your knowledge, experience and approach evolves, and we see that you really care. That you really get serious. Anyway, best of luck to you. You've obviously started a family. I can only assume that you take that seriously. That should translate to all aspects of life that you care about...

I never actually saw the cold solder. I reflowed the vertical deflection part of the board, and the intermittent failure was resolved. I forgot to film that part too. It’s a hassle to set up the camera in multiple locations and film yourself while you just want to get the job done. I’ll work to show more details in the future. Thanks for the comment.

I don't remember if we ever owned a TV with those really silver colored phosphors. Probably, but I wouldn't have noticed if we did, or thought twice about it. Curious to see the black levels once it's up and running.

I'm only 25 seconds in - and that TV is beautiful, by my standards. Remembering all of the huge wooden console televisions of that era (I was a year out of high school), this is atypical of what the market generally had on offer. But, everyone knew that Sony was the premier line of products, so they were not like everything else. I can't recall the year, but I do remember the conversation with my father the first time, when he had to buy a new TV, that he literally could not purchase a console TV. He was distraught that nothing was available with the substantial carved wood enclosure that he had always known. The salesman told him that the best he could do was to get some kind of entertainment center in which to put the television. The end of an era. So this 1987 TV that has no giant wooden cabinet really pleases me. Can't wait to see the picture...

Excellent video. Thanks for your patience and honest method in fault finding. Ive worked as an electronic engineer for over 20 years with mostly modern digital equipment but ive got a real affinity and interest in old electronics like CRT TVs and 8-16 bit games consoles. Ive recently bought a working mega drive gen 1 and a mitsubishi CP-1627BM just to clean up and maybe upgrade with some new capacitors etc if needed. Any solid advise for me starting out this hobby in regards to equipment spare parts and sourcing repair manuals for old electronics? I live in the UK.

Hello Matt, I love your content. I was hoping that you could help me with some issues that I have with my Video Cassette Recorder. If it's no trouble for you. I have the JVC HR-2200U Video Cassette Recorder, and it’s fully functional, I can watch tapes with no problems. The only issue is when I want to record with it. I’m using a Panasonic WV-3060 Color Video Camera, which works because I can see an image through the viewfinder and when I press the camera’s trigger switch the recording starts and the tape advance. The REC and PLAY indicators are lighting, so I assume that the recording is taking place. But when I rewatch the tape to see what I recorded, nothing appears. I have no image that has been recorded or sound. Do you know what may be the problem and how to fix it? I appreciate a lot your answer and help!
