We will go through the steps of repairing a broken leg on a modern style dining room chair. See why a previous repair failed.
I am trying a new gluing technique using hide glue and syringes for the “pre-fix” and then epoxy for the final repair.
Thank you for watching!

Just a thought about the dowel you found in the leg. I have repaired some modern 'decorative style' chairs where the turned legs were dowelled to the square carved sections as they were made separately, probably in different factories. The various design elements were assembled with dowels to give the impression of a single turned, carved, and jointed leg. The joints can be of inconsistent quality, gappy, and sometimes just filled with yellow glue and the occasional brad nail or six. I recently rebuilt a Windsor style chair where the leg tenons were only 6mm into the seat mortise holes and then pinned with lots of brads. Very poor quality furniture at high fashion prices.

Alfred - thank you for that insight. When I first cut the leg, that was one of my thoughts. Given the poor quality of the dowel glue joint I was skeptical. After reading your observations, it very well may have been part of the chair design. I believe it was gap around the dowel and shallow into the leg that caused the weakness. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and watching the video.

I should have waited until farther into the video because given the situation with the dowel, eventhough I still wonder about the initial hide glue, I agree 100% with the epoxy as it is stronger and will fill in any internal voids as well.

Great question on the hide glue. I used it for a couple of reasons: the viscosity is less than PVA, so it works through the syringe a little easier. Also, hide glue is reversible. It can be softened with heat or vinegar. It is also a bit easier to cleanup up. In general, I use hide glue for joint repairs (eg. dowel legs in chairs). For the reversible reason stated above. It makes it easier for the next generation of furniture restorers. I use PVA when I am joining two boards together or adding a piece of wood to make a repair. Epoxy is only used when it is a loose fitting joint - to fill any voids. I hope that helps. Thank you for watching !!!

If the dowel dimension is English it is a repair. If it is metric, probably a part of the original design.

That is a great tip - thank you for sharing it.

Just curious, why hide glue? Is it just because of the longer working time? My preference would probable have been PVA (white).

Sorry for the late reply. I always use hide glue for joints. PVA for breaks and edge gluing and epoxy for loose fitting joints. I did a video on glues and how I use them. I you have time check it out.

You could cut the other leg to see if there is a dowel as well 💁🏻‍♂️

I considered that option. the customer wanted the chair back as soon as possible, so I focused on the repair.

Niddles comes in sizes called gage. I'm not a carpenter, but I think a 16 or 15 gage niddle might work good. We use it for blood transfusion as the inside diameter is wider and easier to draw and infuse. Gages such as 22 or even 27 we use for pediatrics as their veins are much thinner.

Thank you Eddy. I will have to check the gauges on the syringes. Given the thickness of the hide glue, larger gauge may be easier to use.

@@agjohnsonandson It just occurred to me. Dispensing and cannula niddles are blunt. Safer to use. Try blunt dispensing niddles. Cannula might be more expensive.

Over the years I have found it helpful to groove about 3 places around a dowel to provide glue/epoxy relief, very nice work.😀

@@agjohnsonandson Thank you! I’m glad I asked-I never would have spelled that correctly!😁 Great video! I’m going to give it a try. My chair leg is thinner and a very old antique, so I’ll take it slowly.

best of luck. I used a 3/4” dowel. Depending on your situation you may need to go smaller. my rule of thumb is 1/4” smaller than the leg, which allows for 1/8” around the edges. If I can be of any assistance or answer any other questions just let me know.

howdy... I did not understand what he used, once the leg was fixed, to putty it
@agjohnsonandson
@agjohnsonandson Год назад
Once the leg was glued with the new dowel, I used a colored wood putty to fill any remaining cracks. Then, used touchups colors to blend the grain. First a brown that matched the wood color for the background and then a white to blend the grain. My apologies for forgetting to turn the camera on for that portion. Thank you for your question and for watching.
