Repairing a Destroyed Rocker Panel for Under $100.

The rocker panel on my car has been rusting for several years now. I finally found the time and determination to repair it.
I bought sheets of 22 gauge steel from the hardware store, primer, paint, clear coat and undercoating. All in, less than $100. I also used some scrap metal from my scrap pile outside.
The end result turned out a little lumpy, but it looks and, more importantly, functions much better than it did.

There are probably some professional body guys out there cringing but I think you did a great job. Not like this truck was a year old or some classic you were restoring but it did the job and it looks good. I have a similar age truck with the same issues and you've inspired me to fix it. Thanks for the video!

I have watched your video 3 times and i think you did a great job. Your brake invention is amazing and the end result is great. You have inspired me to go out right now and get the rust before it gets worse. I hope i do not need to cut/weld metal. I will not video as my welding usually results in the metal disintegrating. Thanks for the great camera angles showing details, the normal dark cold garage workshop and clever way to get the job done--especially the jack up point using a tractor part.

Now, I know how to do it! Tks for taking the time to share it on RU-vid for other us DIY like you! NB: I Just bought myself a small 120 volts welder (used for $180)... Instead of stitch welding those pieces of gauge metal on, drill holes every 2" along each seam about ½" in so you can spot weld it. It'll make life a little easier. Also using a flap disc 80g or 120g to clean up the welds will help alot too...Nice job though. Especially panning those pieces with what you had. Worked well

1997 maxima has a very bad rust on both side skirts. Do you think that MAACO can fix both ? I still want to keep 1997 Nissan Maxima and will buy other car later.
@Thadivs
@Thadivs 6 лет назад
I've never had any work done by MAACO. I think they do collision work, so they should do rust repair. It may depend on how bad the damage is. They probably won't fabricate parts like the floor pan, they'll just buy them. So, the more things that are damaged, the more it's going to cost. To replace my rocker with "store bought" parts would have cost $500. And that doesn't include labor.

under 100$? you used 1000$ worth of tools.
@Thadivs
@Thadivs 7 лет назад
If you use $1000 worth of tools 100 times, the cost per use is only $10. But I certainly didn't put $1000 into the tools within this video. The jack was a Christmas gift, as was the angle grinder. The welder was given to me for free, but it was broken. It had a bad transistor in the feed circuit, so I was able to fix it for cheap. The jack stands were $20, the small sledge hammer and clamps weren't much. I made the wooden work bench from a large pine tree that was on my property. So the only real money that went into this repair was for the sheet metal, paint and welding wire. If you do envy my collection of tools, just remember that gaining such a collection is nothing more than a matter of priority. Sure, I could have asked for DVDs, clothes and iTunes gift cards for Christmas, but instead, I would ask for a nice tool. Given enough years, I've acquired quite a few nice tools and purchased none of them. I also receive and repair old "junk" tools that people are more than willing to just throw away.
