REPAIRING A RADIOLA IIIA RADIO

This is an old 1925 RCA Radiola IIIa radio that came from a junk store. It was of course not in anywhere near operating condition so it needed not only wiring but a set of WD-11 tubes, which typically cost $50-$100 each on ebay! (the radio itself was bought for $75 at the junk store) We go over the wiring and fix all the problems to get the radio to not only look great but to work as well!

Restoring a radio with tubes you've made yourself is about as gangsta as it gets.

No quality control inspection from the feline. I'm sadly disappointed that I didn't get to see your curious cat :) Nice job, and to utilize your home made tubes is just awesome. Not many people can say they not only restore antique radio gear but to also manufacture tubes is just great.

Always a delight to watch. We're now entering a decade where radios are getting to be true antiques. Stunning. There's only 63 years until the Compact Disc is an antique.......Really odd :D Take care over there. Merry Christmas from Denmark, Scandinavia :)

21:20 The use of a variometer to control the regeneration(reaction) is archaic even by the mid 1920's. Rotating the "Tickler" coil inside the main coil to control the feedback, will have a sharp detuning effect on the radio receiver

Another enjoyable and interesting vid! I have the Radiola III with the balanced amp making it essentially a Radiola IIIA. A very good sensitive radio. If you find a Barkelew switch for it, it makes for much easier antenna selections and looks very good with the set.

@glasslinger Thank you so much. I’m excited to see the upcoming video! It will be exciting to see a long time collectors collection, I have collected them since the mid 90s. And I can remember the gems are used to find in junk shops and antique shops. Of course the Internet makes that a little easier but the prices tend to be a lot higher! And in 90’s they were often still fresh out of the attic after being put up for years

My father must mentioned that he built a 'peanut tube" (AM) radio during WWII. I found a schematic, parts list and assembly directions for one (probably one of many) in a 1935 radio magazine. Have you ever seen one? I am wondering if the parts are even available. The resistors wold be and capacitors/condensers. The tube, probably not.

Question: I believe you said your reproduction tubes draw much more current than the original. Would that not make a risk of burning something out? Although I also heard you say the filament circuit was basically just a bus bar.
