I will never forget an awesome repair I did as a child back in the 1960s....I had a pink pair of shoes...typical of kids shoes...but I loved them and they eventually wore out...to holes in the soles and even tears in the tops....I was talking to a girlfriend and told her how much I loved the shoes and how I actually got a needle and thread and did my best to sew up the holes on top and I actually did a pretty good job....she must have told her Grandmother about this...and the Grandmother must have been very impressed as she sent the girl back with more advice on how to fix them....the instructions she gave was I was to get some cardboard....draw my foot and then cut it out....put them into my shoes and that would help fix the soles....and I did this and I recall it really helped...my favorite shoes were fixed....later the Grandmother wanted to see the shoes....I recall that she was very impressed with how good they looked! They lasted a long time....can't remember exactly how long...but I got alot more use from my favorite shoes.....talk about Depression Era advice!

That is awesome! I'm a senior and grew up poor. You had to do your best to save/repair items cuz there was no money to replace them. I walked back and forth to school and we also walked back and forth home for lunch. When you had holes in your shoes and it rained or snowed it wasn't fun. I would put my foot in a bread bag first to protect my foot from the elements before putting my shoes on. Mom would spring for a pair of cleats when we got a new pair of shoes for our heals to make them last longer. They were metal and I can still hear the sound they made on the floors as you walked. Everyone had them. Your shoe repair guy was your best friend. I also used newspaper in my boots for insulating warmth. I can only imagine the horror of a young person today if they had to McGiver necessary items!

Try using your sewing machine. I put a piece if scrap fabric on the back side under the tear. Then i sew a zigzag stitch on the front. It must have been mending day yesterday. I darned a pair of socks, repaired the hem on a pair of compression stockings, fixed the exact same tear as yours on a pair of britches that are semi-stretch and shortened the arm length on 6 T's for my husband. It felt good to have the skills to make these repairs especially in light of world events.

I will be putting your technique to practice on a pair cycling pants I own. They’re my only pair of insulated cycling pants. And at $85 I’m not throwing them away because of a nickel sized tear. Thanks for the video. 👍

Oh my gosh! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! My Sis in Law gave me a stretchy summer dress and the first time wearing it I somehow got a tear in it. Broke my heart. I can mend cotton things, sew on buttons, etc. Stitch hems and such but the stretchy fabric mend had me stumped. This is such perfect timing and so very helpful.

I'm a sewer, I'll sew anything and everything, lol. When I was a kid I wanted a pair of flip flops for years, but my mom adamantly refused to buy me a pair; she said (she's a physician), that they were bad for my feet. So, when I was around 9 or 10 I made a pair out of cardboard and cloth. My mom laughed at my ingenuity, but she still refused to buy me some flip flops. I'm also an Artist, and I paint, sew or embroider the edges of my under pillowslips. Nowadays I wear flip flops in the shower, because I have weakened ankles due to breaks in them. I have a plate and 7 pins in my right ankle. :// Good tutorial Bev! :)

My gramma had a small check blouse, had a tear near the arm. She mended it so well you couldnt see the tear or the patch, matching the checks, a small piece cut from inside the hem.

My favorite pair of jeans developed a hole in the one thigh (after 15 years of wear). I had saved an NFL emblem off a pair of sleep-pants that fell apart and were thrown away years prior and decided to use that to cover the hole. I sewed the hole very mildly at first, taking care not to "pucker" the material at all. Then hand stitched this emblem circle thing over the repair. It isn't perfect - some of the original material was still attached to the emblem that you can see if you really inspect it, but overall, it looks like it was meant to be there direct from the factory. It's amazing what we can do to not only save money but also salvage our favorite things!

Great job BEVE I’ve got several pairs of polyester pants I need to fix. Never thought about rolling it in. I can see have since I was a kid but as I get older I’m getting lazy rarely go anywhere so why bother? But I think after watching this I will start with the favorite pair. Thanks 😊

I remember when I ripped the heck out of a hooded sweatshirt I had. It got caught on a door handle at work... pocket came clean off and left a nice sized hole. The technique of rolling the tear really works!.I repaired it so well that my boyfriend at the time thought I had bought a new hoodie. Nope! I had to pull out the glue gun for a loose strap on a pair of shoes the other day and thought of you. I may have only paid $9 two years ago for a Walmart knock-off of Teva sandals, but I'm determined to.make them last until I wear a hole through them! They're comfortable and my feet look cute in them, so what can I say?

Thanks for the tips on stretchy fabric. I can mend things, but it is never pretty lol.I told my kids I would have to show them how to darn socks 🧦 Needless to say my millennial children went on for quite a while saying "them darn socks" and laughing. I was serious, and they have no clue... I am worried lol

Can you use a very very thin strip of Wonder Under on the reverse to stabilize the tear and then zigzag stitch to reinforce it OR use thin/light interfacing that you can remove after it has been mended??

Did your garden attack your capris? I like your way of mending. I usually just sew a hole in one direction then back the other direction with about 100 yards of thread for a 3 inch tear lol.

I had bought a pretty pink Tshirt when I was a truck driver. Something new and feminine to wear occasionally. Dummy me. I wore it one day , not sure how I did it nor exactly when I did it. But there's a large oval brown spot on the back. Now I have another pink t shirt and that one has some grease stains on the back. Oh I have used every stain removal method , nope those stains stay. I wear them anyway screw it
