Repairing a yanmar 3jh3e 

I just did this as a favor for a friend. It was more of a challenge. I have never once worked on a 4 stroke diesel ever. And since someone else took it apart and it was missing some parts it was crazy that we got it running in two afternoons.

And yes, Wd is much less volatile than starting fluid. It took a bit to get fuel to the injectors

That engine is still running strong 3 years later and many hundreds of hours usage

Docking motor's are traditionally fairly small for tight and controlled environments where you need a predictable throttle but I've seen a few used when its calm with fairly good results speed wise. They are after all an Auxiliary engine.

tony66au I’m not much of a boat guy but I kinda figured that was its job. I was brought up to always go with “ big is better” theroy. Having said that, that little motor probably lived in that Cat and will go back “ home” a happily little camper. Go in peace little motor ✌️

New rings on all 3 cylinders but yes used pistons.

@@rickjohnson1632 Me neither but I was dragged along on a few boats as a teen and in my early 20's. These guys where very pernickity about using the right terms for the gear lol so I got an edumacation if I wanted it or not. On the bright side the LOVED my old Bus when we would go camping or shooting and eventually a few Traded up although they kept the Captains hats so I dubbed them Couch (Coach) Captains and had a lot of fun with "Permission to come aboard" etc as most had more gold braid than a South American Dictator which is saying something lol

They were missing. We ordered them and added them the next week. That engine is still running strong more than 1,000 hrs now

Had you ever seen a submerged engine set for two years in a bilge of a boat with a head off open to the elements? A light cleaning to smooth out the rust ;)

@@BusGreaseMonkey I haven't though I think if the surface were bad enough to warrant sandpaper id probably take it to the be machined. Honestly all my experience is with gasoline car engines. I've never even touched a marine diesel.

The fact that it’s alive again says a lot. I never touched a single 4 stroke diesel and this thing was simple to work on. Mechanical everything i loved it.

It’s harbor freight. I have two of them one of the two quit charging after like two days. So i just switch batteries around to the one that charges. I like it but with one quitting like that so quick I’m not sure about recommending it. I’ve had them over a year and they both work great other than the one not charging. Strong magnet base, bright, three modes of light.

I know, very strange wasting a whole revolution for nothing...

I bought a bus, read the manual and started taking stuff apart. Then some friends needed help and after a few referrals it kind of took over my life..

Did you think it would run again? I was not so confident and i saw it in person all seized up. So we just played with it. It was just a Hail Mary we did for fun. When that thing came out of the bilge it was a lost cause.

Competent enough to get it running without spending the $350.

This was for a friend of his, I'm sure a paying customer would be different. Of course why pay attention to get all the facts?

@@quackattak Your rudeness is not warranted. The facts were noted. This is going in a boat, reliability is a major factor. As I stated I have watched a few of his other videos and I am impressed with his skill and knowledge. But, putting that in a boat is just silly. I think his friend should reconsider using it. P.S. I try not to troll, I talk to people as if they were in front of me. You should to.

He is going to put some time on it. Regardless i turned his seized anchor of an engine into a running engine in two afternoons, and a couple hundred bucks in parts.

@@BusGreaseMonkey I sir would be honored to have you work on any of my stuff. I was a sailboat capt. (Yamars) and a big boat Capt. 16v92's and 671's, Man's, Cat's, Cummins etc. for many years.. Now have a 1978 Oldsmobile Toronado 403 V8 front wheel drive Motorhome .. I would love for you to pass by and or come visit.. I watch your stuff out of pure pleasure.. I grew up in the Bahamas and one sister born there.. 64.. Andros, Nassau, Bimini etc. and know it very well.. The other sister in St. croix USVI.. and I am the oldest.. I do know about boats and the Bahamas.. and the Bahamian government. seen many pipe dreams about chartering in the Bahamas go up in smoke.. Now if you have friends fly in from the states and "visit" you.. that is a different story.. however you want to get around that.. My concern is for an abused engine he plans to depend on.. My Hat is always off to you and wish I had your help and expertise back when I was running those Roger Penske 16V92 DDEC pair of engines in the 70' Sportfish... We might have got a lot more Marlin fishing done..

This is his 14th boat and he’s been legally chartering in the Bahamas for 35 years... i think he’s got it covered

They don’t make an oil pan gasket, it’s like that from the factory. And yes he wanted to even see if it could be running again.

@@BusGreaseMonkey I knew it'd run - been there many times, and have faith in your perseverance and skills, too. Only thing I worried about was the little fuel pumps - they can be finicky and refuse to pump - had luck riding shotgun with ya there!
