I love your editing process, where you do not waste my time with a bunch of nonsense that doesn't add anything to the subject at hand. Plus, you don't overwhelm me with voice over loud music. Good job. Now, you did make me very nervice when you where pushing a piece of wood across your jointer without a push stick. I lost the bottom of my left pinkey finger. There was not enough skin left to stitch it so they just packed it with spounges and told me to grin and bare it. It was a long time healing and I still have nerve problems with it. Well, with that said, I really have learned a lot from your videos . . . thank you. Ron Budman.

Hi Ron, you're welcome! I am careful, but I have always felt that if you can hold it better with your hand and fingers it's the safest way. Obviously, if the cut is too small, then use push sticks. But push sticks can be dicey too if you can't control the wood

Good point, but i'm just trying to save as much of the original as I can. I had trouble matching the color, and your suggestion would have solved that problem. I'd be worried that I would not be succesfull removing the old veneer so it could be reused Tom

Hi Michael, Thanks, it must have been cut to go against a wall. It's hard to imagine doing that to a nice piece of furniture.

A great looking piece and a great repair... As always... I wonder if the top moulding was cut so it would fit next to a wall??? You have a nice stock of veneer. Thanks for posting. Take Care, Michael Frey

I think either next to a wall or a matching cabinet. Somewhere out there may be a mirror image of this cabinet!!

I always admire your ability to cut veneer. When I do it the stuff practically explodes into fragments. The key for me seems to be to use very sharp tools.
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 6 лет назад
Yes, and you can soak it in a glycerin mixture for instance, but that's impractical. What I often do if I have a difficult piece is tape it before cutting, orienting it so that the tape ends up on the outside.

Fabulous! How did you ever get a solid wood repair to match a veneer? Another one for you compendium?

Thanks! Well, wood is wood, doesn't really matter if it's solid or veneer

Looks pretty good. Always enjoy watching your videos. My guess, your house must favor a Danish Modern style.

Thanks! No, my house is 246 years old! Furnished eclectically, some antiques and old reproductions. But I like MCM just fine!

I understand the desire to save as much of the original piece as possible, but wouldn't the cornice have looked a lot better with a whole new sheet of veneer across the face? The old veneer section could have been steamed-off and used to repair all the other chips on the case.

I have been cleaning and waxing my antique pieces and t was all going well until today. The walnut sideboard top did fine, but the sides and doors look like the finish came right off with my cleaning. Dull and blotchy, even after the beeswax. My guess is it needs to have the finish redone. Any suggestions?
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 3 года назад
That's a tough one! I'm not sure at all. Especially if you have done the same thing before. I would clean the surfaces well to get rid of the old wax, a mild solution of Dawn detergent would do it, and rewax

I just found you - spent the last week catching up. And now I find you are retiring... NO! Can you recommend a decent replacement? I have an old Empire game table with hand made half round caps for the edges of the top. Any recommendations for making replacements for missing bits?

I have a question as to why did you use yellow glue for the veneer and the hide glue on the corner of the cornice?
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 7 лет назад
Most of the time that I am gluing new work (or new pieces) I will use yellow glue. But when I'm working on the actual antique piece I will use hide glue, only because the thought is to use a glue the most similar to what was used originally.

In the 1830-40's, how did they make veneer ?
@johnsonrestoration

Thanks! That is a really good question. I've never seen anything written on the subject. Will have to google it!
