In this video I flip the Green Machine over, scrap the hull and weld it up ready for anti-fouling. I put on an undercoat of International Primocon and then coat it with Trilux 33 anti-foul.

Hey bud pro tip, when welding up cracks its best to drill the tip of the crack with a pin hole to stop the crack from returning, and to remember that aluminum welds differently at different metal temps, ie as the base metal temp raises it takes more pedal to weld, I like to give cooldown times to my weld times when working aluminum

Here is a cool hint to coating boat bottoms. Mix up a couple packages or bottles of cyan pepper in your bottom paint. Why you ask me? Barnacles are small animals that don't like hot things so they won't attach to the painted bottom.with the pepper in the paint it will last a long time. I saw this in an article in a magazine 40 years ago. It works try it next time.

I purchased a '60's Gregor 12' welded aluminum boat from a government site. It was used in fresh water all it's life. I'm using it as a tender in the SF bay area (salt water). After fairly extensive research I will use the Interlux 2 part 2000E barrier coat epoxy primer. They recommend 4 to five coats above and below water line. This product is also used on fiberglass. The bottom is sanded with 36 grit, cleaned with air pressure or new brush to keep contaminents down. The 2000E coat is applied within 60 minutes of cleaning. I can do two hours between coats depending on temp and humidity. Here in N. California I am hoping to get it finished in one day start to finish. Max time for curing two weeks. Have you heard about this epoxy? Then I'm applying 4 coats of Trilux 33 bottom paint. Let the experiment begin. I'll haul it one year from finish and try to remember to contact you with results. :>)

@@DangarMarine The next time you do this to your boat, get a sufficient quantity of a product called "Marine-Tex. Put a 1/8th layer on the bottom and sand smooth. Then paint. They have an aluminum based Marine-Tex for your type boat. You can run over stumps with no damage. A lot of guys that fish up here in the nasty Ohio River take their brand new Ranger boats, grind off the gel coat, apply this product as stated above, then realized gel coat the bottom. You might want to look into it. It's great for fixing cavitation plates,skegs, and pitted outboards.

PPS: If you blow through put a piece of copper on the back side to act as an argon well and also to hold your puddle. By turning the cleaning action up you are decreasing the penetration which is what you want on that thin material as well as cleaning the impurities with the ac action.

Hey Stu I found a lump of 4 by 2 timber a metre or two long was easier to use than the scraper scraping the barnacles off the bottom of the boat. Just hang on to it with two hands at a similar angle and use it the same way. quicker and easier. doesn't scratch the metal or existing anti-foul as much. Thanks for the video it was good demo.

Braising with map gas and ally rods works well as long as you heat the base metal and not just melt the rod
@matthewmoses4222
@matthewmoses4222 8 лет назад
Been a while since I have done TIG welding but some tips for next time. Preheat your area with a heat gun, doesn't have to be radically hot but at least warm. Vee out the crack to minimise impurities and make sure you drill the ends with around a 3mm (1/8th") drill to lower the chance of it spreading. A backing plate on the other side of the hull may have helped (just some mild steel plate pushed up behind the area you are welding) to spread the heat better as you weld. In your case you appear to be correct, your amperage was too low and so you were getting poor penetration until you upped the current. De Havilland hulls are notoriously difficult to weld well (they were mainly riveted) so you did a good job for your first go! PS: A detail sander makes for a lot easier sanding between strakes and chines. Etch primer on bare metal is a must.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 8 лет назад
Thanks Matthew, some great tips there! Paul has an old aluminium hull with quite a few holes so I think we are going to be getting a lot more practice over the coming months. I'll be sure to put some of your techniques into practice when we do the job. :)
@matthewmoses4222
@matthewmoses4222 8 лет назад
Just remember to set your your welding current, keep raising it until you are about to blow a hole through the metal then just back off a few amps and you should get maximum penetration and strength.
@DangarMarine

Yes, I think I was too afraid of blowing a hole through, but on the bright side, given that hasn't happened I can always grind it back and have another go next year! ;)

Love your videos (I’m from Aurora, Ontario, Canada). I have a question about painting an aluminum boat. I have a 19 ft aluminum fishing boat that I use only in fresh water lakes. The above waterline two tone paint is getting a bit rough looking - mainly a lot of scratches. I assume I would lightly sand and remove any decals. Would I need to use a primer? Is there a aluminum paint primer? Do I need to use a special kind of paint for painting above the waterline. Can you recommend a brand or the right type of paint to use on aluminum (above waterline). Thanks, Paul

@douglasthompson2740

Aluminum that is old and has been painted as well as in salt water will be dirty which I am sure you know. So when you weld it be prepared to weld beads and then grind the entire bead out. You might have to do that two or three times but each time you are removing the impurities. Marine aluminum is most likely a 5000 or 6000 series so using 4043 rod will wet out more easily and solve a bit of your problem on that. It isn't nice to work with but it can be done. Take care. Doug

Hello Danger Marine! This might be a stupid question. I have paint worn on my lowerunit so that aluminiumoxide is visible in form of pits and scratches. Now i'm wondering how the light coat of paint will react with the aluminium?

It depends what the paint is made from. Most paints are fine though, it is only antifoul that can sometimes contain copper which is very bad for aluminium.

with your tig welding you want to start the puddle on some good aly and make sure you angle your tig across the piece and not into it then you cna use good heat and push the puddle from good aly across the gap rather than having tow puddles contaminated fighting each other, there's nothing wrog with too much heat if you ahve plenty of filler. :)

Hey dangar, would you recommend buying a aluminium 15ft boat with a hull thickness of 2mm ?or is it too thin in the longrun ?
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 8 лет назад
Hi Abdulla, it really depends on a few things. If a boat has strong ribs and other bracing 2mm can be okay. Light boats are less comfortable on the water so the conditions you use it in will also be a factor. If you are boating on calm lakes etc I think 2mm would be fine, but it you intend to travel at speed on choppy waters you might want to go a bit thicker/ heavier.

Might want too also consider attaching a sacrificial anode to boat such as piece of zinc, it will corrode before the aluminium. With the welding, might be worth practicing a bit before. RU-vid has .a goldmine of information on it, you also probably need an all purpose filler rod as well if you don't know what type of aluminium your welding.

I am wondering why you didn't use the car hoist and a simple rope sling off the extended arms to lift the boat off the trailer . That would have been both safer and simpler. By the way, when do you do any customer work to pay for all the stuff you use :-)
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 8 лет назад
Hey Ron, we did use the hoist to put it back on the trailer, and in many ways it was a bit simpler. At the time, tying it off meant it could just stay in that one spot of the workshop, and that was too appealing!

Best thing to do with images is to put them on an image sharing site and then post the link. If you do that I can add the link to the description the video and people can easily check it out.

having never worked on boats, my question is, why didn't you just paint all of the boat, why tape it off at all. just wondering, enjoy your videos!
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 5 лет назад
That paint is an antifoul for preventing growth on the hull as it lives in the water full time. It is toxic and doesn't last above the waterline.

thanks for the info, I would have been painting it all over everything thinking it was just "paint". that's why i enjoy your videos learn something every time i watch ;-)

I've had fiberglass boats, apart from a small fishing boat as a kid which was aluminum. Why are aluminum boats the choice for where you live, and in turn, why are most smaller boats (16+ feet) in states fiberglass? I assume it's a weight:cost ratio but I was curious what your thoughts are. With the corrosion issue with aluminum what is the argument against fiberglass?
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 8 лет назад
Hey Seth, good question. The main reason most boats around the island are aluminium is because they are anchored up against each other or a wharf all day and night so they take quite a bashing, particularly during storms. Larger fishing boats (16+) do tend to be fibreglass, but they don't make great commuter boats. The hulls themselves seem to last quite a while from a corrosion point of view. My hull is about 40 years old now. Fibreglass boats tend to be heavier which makes them much more comfortable offshore and a bit more thirsty on the fuel.

@@DangarMarine Could you have both by putting a layer of fiberglass on the hull?

All these primers and antifouls are specifically made for aluminium so they'll be good.

@@ceannscriteach81 have you ever raised worms? Well every so often they ball up together and cover themselves with a milky white substance. THAT is worm milk. It also serves to make little worms.

Add a warning about picking the right anti-fouling paint. The wrong kind, metallic, turns the boat into a huge battery, that eats itself in short order.

Of course there are the times when the thinker is still boating while the doer is pulling the boat out to do it right the second time. ;)

What you don't see is pourous That's why I think soda blast and then west system of exopy that is heat driven into the aluminum. Your anode, I didn't see one. That means your boat is the scarficing the aluminum, making it pourous
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 7 лет назад
I have done an epoxy coat on a hull before and it did work pretty well. The nice thing about it is it can also free you up to use some more effective antifouls. This hull now has an anode on the transom, but it wasn't in this video.
