"Aw, #$%&!!!" You just scraped one of your wheels on a curb. We know exactly how you feel. That's why in 2009, on one of our trips to Germany, we were excited to discover a new wheel repair kit. It claimed to let you repair scraped or gouged BMW and MINI silver alloy wheels all by yourself, with excellent results. We were a bit skeptical, but with replacement wheels costing anywhere from $300--600 apiece, if this kit worked 75% as well as was claimed, it could save BMW and MINI owners a ton of dough.
We brought a kit home with us and gave it to one of our Advisors to test. He was very impressed, saying, "From 5 feet away my roommates could not tell where the repair was done. Since then, thousands of BMW and MINI owners have repaired their wheels using this kit, saving each of them hundreds of dollars. (One kit can do several wheels.) Excellent video, you may have just saved me from having to scrap my old wheels. Pro refurb was going to cost a lot of money but think I will have a go myself. Slightly easier for me as a friend in the tyre trade can remove my tyres allowing me to do all the wheel)s) in one go. Thanks

Sure, you could use the kit on any part of the wheel.

How well would this work for oem ZCP wheels for the E46 M3? They currently have an incredible finish to them, like they've been dipped in paint by the factory rather than sprayed. They sort of have a smooth, reflective finish to them rather than a dull, matte look. Would there be a noticeable difference in using this kit on these wheels?

I have 2008 550i. Will kit in this video work for it? How many uses can you get out of the kit? How many rims will it repair? Will paint work for my vehicle rims?

There is enough putty and paint to repair quite a bit of damage. We can't really say how many wheels, as it all depends on the severity and quantity of the damage. The repair shown here used only a fraction of the supplied putty. As for the wheel paint itself, it should be close enough that the repaired areas will not be obviously different in color.

ALLOY rim tire changing machines do not touch the outside rim. The OLD Steel rim machines rig along the outer edge of the rim - for most those days are gone. If you have alloy rims and see this old school machine RUN AWAY otherwise you will be buying this kit to fix that mess.

When it comes to painting, would you need to use primer, the paint color its self and a clear coat on top? Or is it different when it comes to painting a rim

I have had mobile repair done before because I was too damn lazy...I have also done this repair myself. I have also taken my wheels to a wheel repair facility that straightens and refinishes wheels. By FAR, the best and least expensive is to take to a business who handles this from A to Z. My experience is that the same approximate repairs cost me half of a mobile repair. As well, these mobile companies use proprietary materials that are similar to, if not the same as what I could buy. The results? My repair? 2 hours of my time...and $40-50. Mobile repair $210. Taking it to Detroit Wheel and Tire...$90. All you are really paying for is the convenience. At $120 difference, that's a steep price to pay for "convenience". The results, my repair was inferior to Detroit Wheel and Tire. Comparing my repair to the mobile wheel repair was also inferior, but not by much..and that was my third wheel. Do your homework, prep and patience is the key.

After you had applied so many coats of the paint, I'm guessing that didn't take long to wait till tacky. Did you apply the clear coat after the last paint coat went tacky? Also, How long did/do you wait to polish the finished paintwork in order to blend?

You can apply the clear coat as if it is another coat of color. In other words, before the color is full cured. Or, you can wait for the color to cure, then apply a couple light-mist coats of clear, wait for them to fully flash over then apply the coats to produce the gloss. We did not clear this wheel as we were only painting the repair and the color alone matched the original paint. Blending/feathering can be done once the paint is cured past any tack. We did the feathering the next day. Longer is fine, and perhaps even better.

Is there anything you recommend to clean brake dust off of wheels? I can't seem to get it off my e46 wheels. I'm almost thinking about re-painting them with this alloy paint, any thoughts? Thanks!

If the P21S wheel cleaner and/or the Sonax cleaner (both available at www.bavauto.com) do not remove the staining from the brake dust, a repaint may be your best alternative.. If the wheels are otherwise in good shape, just scuff them with an aggressive abrasive pad (like the Wurth one we offer) and the paint. We offer both the paint from the wheel repair kit and the wheel paint from Wurth. The Paint from the kit is a little brighter and is a better match for later models. the Wurth paint is a better match for earlier models. However, if repainting the complete wheel ... you can use whichever you like. Just check the online store and search "wheel paint".

I have made repairs like this and have found my work was ruined once I had to replace tires. the device tire shops use removed the hardened putty and exposed the ugly curb rash.

Yea, but how often do you need new tires mounted? Just do the repair again. Very low cost to do rather than buying new or good used rims.

For full wheel repainting, we recommend the Wurth wheel paint. We have this in the standard BMW silver color. You would apply the silver, then top-coat with the clear. We would suggest that you use the Wurth silver wheel paint for the stock X5 wheels (see link below). If you want extra protection and gloss, use the clear after the silver. While tow cans of the color should be enough, you may want to buy extras, just in case. You can always return whet you don't use. As noted in other replies; you would want to warn the technician and have them be using a touchless system.

what happens when you get new tires and the lets say, put a wheel weight on that spot? Would it crack off?

In removing and installing tires, a "no touch" tire changer should be used and the technician should be aware of the repaired area. As for balancing, it would be best to use stick-on weights on the inside of the wheel barrel .... just as you would for a wheel that does not have the outer lip profile for clamp-on weights.

You can ask the tire tech to mount the weights on the inside of the wheel (if possible) for cosmetic reasons. But if you have chunks that large effecting weight mounting then it's probably time for a replacement rim.

DaytonCarCare yes, the weights certainly could be mounted behind the spokes and on the inner edge of the wheel barrel, just as you would on a wheel that does not have the type of lip for clamp-on weights.

Yes, a file does only cut in one direction. We don't always lift the file on the back-stroke, but we do lighten our pressure on the file. Depends on what we're actually cutting.

The paint will fail too quickly to worth spending more on primer. Factory paint is baked on. Its performance cannot be duplicated at home.

+Dad VS Kids Gaming I have seen the way "mobile wheel" repair techs work. Its bascially the same, instead you use a gun to spray instead of a can. Also you use a Grinder to grind the lip of the wheel (and you dont level it out with any putty) to do it faster. I fail to see how this is the "worst" way and yours is the "best" way. If you are going to make bold statements, its best if you back it up with directions and even better a 1080p video.

I'm in the process of doing my contours styled wheels on m3. I'm on my 2nd wheel. not bad I must say. the more patient u r (sanding, molding) the better. good color match. it's worth the purchase.
