These are some of the melodies I found repeated in the TBoI's soundtrack. I may have forgotten some, if so please comment which ones Sorry for the laggy gameplay, too many items sometimes breaks my frame rate º3º
I'm a sucker for repeated leitmotifs and man this video was done in such a fantastic, nicely explained and detailed way, the mausoleum door absolutely blew my brain up!
I never notised before that void music is all about motifs combined, it feels so smooth compare to mudeth's void which contain such agressive use of his motifs.
Definitely, Mudeth’s version definitely feels a lot more like a big jigsaw puzzle that is meant to be obvious, which is fine! It just gives a different feeling than ridiculon’s. I am a big fan of mudeth’s ost for the game, but the two give completely different vibes!
I was hoping the boss rush could gets it’s own song just because of how difficult and long it can take to finish it since during the time of Rebirth the same bosses would appear in the same order every time, whereas with Afterbirth and beyond the order is all random. The new song in repentance really defines the absolute struggle of it.
I love the fact how the tainted version of genesis retake has isaacs dad singing and the regular version has his mom singing showing how his mother brainwashed him into thinking his father was a evil person.
Cool video! Although there are only a few leitmotiv in Isaac's soundtrack, it's nice to have a "visualization" of them like this. The basement theme (and probably other leitmotiv) also pops up in the Legend of Bumbo's soundtrack. Some leitmotiv stuck out to me tbh. First, the one at 2:56 represents fatality. It plays when fighting Ultra Death and in Sepulcrum (the Delirium ending that explicitely shows Isaac died in the chest IRL); it plays on the title screen (and derivates) because the game's story is all about Isaac getting sacrificed or dying/being long dead inside the chest. Then, 9:02 represents breaking down. The Burning Basement is a corrupted and collapsing version of the Basement, while the Void is a corrupted and collapsing version of Isaac's mind.
you know, what I REALLY love about this is that every leitmotif is noticeable in Terminus, the Void theme, signifying that the void is a mess and a half
I was not expecting so much Armageddon here. That's only make me sure that's one of the best songs added in Repentance. Also makes sense for Armageddon to be a remix for both Crusade and Cerebrum Dispersio as both of them are boss fight themes.
Cool, I was wondering if a video like this existed! I was probably gonna try and make something like this myself if it didn't already, so thanks for saving me the work haha. There's also a motif with the Cellar theme "Periculum" that appears in the boss theme "Crusade". It's towards the beginning in Periculum (the first part of the song that's not an electric guitar) and starts at about 50 seconds in Crusade. If you want to include The Legend of Bumbo, it also has several songs with motifs from Isaac Rebirth. In Repentance, "Walls of Denial" (the Mausoleum theme) takes a motif from Bumbo's "Halls of Belial", they have similar chanting. I'm sure there's more but those are the ones that come to mind at the top of my head
Timecodes: 0:13 1 Fragment Melody of Main Menu 0:53 2 Fragment Melody of Main Menu 2:56 3 Fragment Melody of Main Menu 5:48 "Diptera Sonata" Melody 6:26 Loading Screen Melody(?) 7:57 "Alt Boss Fight" Melody 9:02 "Fundamentum" Melody 9:46 Flash-version Melody(?)
The Loading Screen Melody is actually better known as the Crusade Melody since we first get to fight the floor's boss before jumping into another floor, and the melody is barely noticeable in the loading screen part. Vanilla's Melody is widely known as Sacrificial so that's that. Overall, great timestamping and smart naming, I didn't expect that when coming to the comment section! :]
I'm glad it was in the Repentance trailer, but I do still wish we got those first ten notes of Sacrificial somewhere in Rebirth. That track is just so iconic to me and to anyone who loved the original game, and getting a reference to it would have been amazing.
Okay so... These are the leimotifs as I understand them Leimotif 1: the awakening/ the Ascension Leimotif 2: isaac's theme/ anthem of the suffering Leimotif 3: your end here comes/the loop begins anew Leimotif 4: the beginning Leimotif 5: confrontation/ fears and traumas Leimotif 6: facing your fears and demons / schizophrenia Leimotif 7: all that decays... Leimotif 8 (sacrificial/old arcade/antibirth secret room): exploration of the basement/my life is your game Leimotif 9 (vanilla menu theme/innermost apocalypse) : true theme of Isaac/ let me tell you a sad story about Christianity and obsession Leimotif 10 (vanilla caves/antibirth secret room): the danger increases Leimotif 12 (cellar, satan fight, delirium): call to sin / your demoms await Leimotif 13 (normal, top and ultra secret rooms): someone lost and forgotten by time
Love this video! I'm a sucker for leitmotifs. I'll never stop thinking about the pure brilliance of this game's soundtrack- and the subtle Dies Irae in the Genesis tracks.
Oh wow, this is _really_ in depth. I absolutely love it, because I adore seeing motifs being ingrained so deep into a game's soundtrack and its sound design.
with how much i play isaac and listen to its soundtrack i am REALLY surprised i didnt catch on a lot of these. armageddon really surprised me too, id never realized it also used motifs until now. rlly awesome :]
This is really cool! I love that the Void's soundtrack has bits of every single motif. Very clever bit of sound design they did there, since the whole Void is a mishmash of everything that came before.
A lot of these I have noticed, like the ones in terminus, some of the ones in Armageddon, ultra greed, and most of the main menu ones, but I never noticed a lot of them in living in the light the one in ultra death. I guess there’s always too many sound effects going on in those fights
I knew most of them (although it's really cool seeing them together and how Terminus uses a lot of motifs because it's a combination of all the floors), the one @ 6:37 struck me the most. I never noticed that.
i love the fact , the "final" stage (with it theme named "terminus" ) have the motif of the first ever stage every TBOI Rebirth experienced And armageddon , the place where you fight against many bosses , contains Crusade and Cerebrum Dispersio
The how Terminus has a lot of themes mixed into one long song is kinda something else. Like i see that i never noticed. If it had the reference to TBOI Wrath of The Lamb it'd surely be a distorted version of distant memories as a whole. It has a ton of interesting stuff hidden in the songs even. The how stuff is hidden is something else. But Terminus impresses me overall. Just like Delirium did at first
Good video, been wanting to create one just like this myself actually. There is actually a few more, and i think you missed a really big one. There is a motif in the boss theme that connects it to the cellar, and Satan themes (maybe more I have to think about it). Also the mines theme lends a lot of the genesis motif. Also, the burning basement is actually really the normal basement motif but focuses more on the descending part of it and is more ominous.
When I started doing the mother path I started to notice that later in the knife piece 2 chase theme, it had a tiny part of Genesis in it that you can barely hear unless if you turn up the volume
i looove the use of peitmotifs which is why i also love undertale so much and i loved watching this video though i have to admit there weren't really any in there i didnt already know, but i'm always looking out for them anyways, they are like my drug i was super disappointed tbh that they didn't reference the og isaac soundtrack in the game tbh like just a small quote from sacrificial in the beast fight would have rounded everything out so well i was so excited when you explored the theme in the end, but the resolution was just forgotten lullaby, that's not in the game 😭 hard to believe a fanmade mod did the original game more justice than the big final dlc well i'm overexaggerating of course, great video 👍
Fun fact, If you listen to "Penance" from the flash OST, The first few notes sounds like certain parts of juggernaut (Alt Floor Boss), specifically the piano parts
i like how terminus (void music) repeats (almost) every leimotif, it feels like the level it self is just a "unfinished level", a place that isaac wasn't expecting to findind, and that place being the game itself, (the gameplay part at least, because dogma is the reason why isaac is in this purgatory)
So there is an actual reason for games to do this, the biggest example being Toby Fox's Undertale. When you first hear a melody, your brain assigns an emotion to it, based on what you feel when you hear it. then every time you hear it again it evokes that same emotion from your brain. Like HeartAche, Toriel's battle music, brought emotions of pain having to fight someone who showed so much care to you. And when that melody plays again during the asgore fight, Bergentruckung, it evokes that same pain.
I like the fact of downstream's theme being the alternative of original Isaac's shop theme. I don't know exactly, but AFAIK Danny Baranowski and Ridiculon are not way too optimistic to each other, so there was low chances of hearing something from original Flash Isaac. But motif of shop theme was a gift to say the least. I mean, it's such a long way, played from earliest demo, finding game randomly on RU-vid back in 2010s, and now here we are, hearing the echoes of past in one of the level themes in remake with a lot of new content
