We need to keep slugs and snails out of our crops because they damage plants and can carry a dangerous parasite that causes rat-lungworm disease in humans. Typical slug treatments involve using poisons around crops, or removal by hand - these methods are not ideal.
My hypothesis was that low-voltage electric fences can repel slugs and snails. I built test fences using strips of copper and aluminum attached to a plywood board and powered by a standard 9-volt battery.
I first tested whether slugs and snails could cross fences with the power off. I then tested whether the same slugs and snails could cross the fence with the power on.
All slugs and snails crossed the fence with the power off, but no slugs and snails could cross when the power was on. The 9-volt electric fence was 100% effective in repelling slugs and snails.
Footage of experiment testing the effectiveness of low-voltage electric current at repelling slugs. The experiment also demonstrates that metallic copper alone does not repel slugs.
