We need to keep slugs and snails out of our crops because they damage plants and can carry a dangerous parasite that causes rat-lungworm disease in humans. Typical slug treatments involve using poisons around crops, or removal by hand - these methods are not ideal.
My hypothesis was that low-voltage electric fences can repel slugs and snails. I built test fences using strips of copper and aluminum attached to a plywood board and powered by a standard 9-volt battery.
I first tested whether slugs and snails could cross fences with the power off. I then tested whether the same slugs and snails could cross the fence with the power on.
All slugs and snails crossed the fence with the power off, but no slugs and snails could cross when the power was on. The 9-volt electric fence was 100% effective in repelling slugs and snails.
Footage of experiment testing the effectiveness of low-voltage electric current at repelling slugs. The experiment also demonstrates that metallic copper alone does not repel slugs.

When the slug curls up like that, it’s because it’s overwhelmed with pain and attempts to roll over to safety. When it fails, it puts itself in a world of pain

9V is enough to kill slugs. To my experience 3-4V is enough to keep them away. I use 4x copper wire (+-+-) for a small distance between + and - while having a decent overall distance for the slugs to pass. Otherwise some slugs may strech over the fence or are small enough to not be affected.

This is obviously a painful death for them. How about a lower voltage which just repels them?

Electrocution is somewhat different to repelling them. You may as well use beer traps or poisons if you are going to kill them. The trick is to stop them crossing, not fry the poor bastards.

Exactly. Without food they aren't able to replicate sucessfully, it's enough to keep them away from the vegetables.

9 volts, my butt 🤣 I’ve seen 9volt slug fences, the slugs retract every time they touch the second electrode, and eventually quit and go away. This is straight-up electrocution. I’m guessing at least a car battery.

If it’s 9volts I’d like to see him touch it

Dude dont kill them like this..

Umm I don't like slugs eating my veggies but I would not subject them to that death, there must be a better way!

assuming if it is on a vertical surface the slug would fall off at the first touch. this video is gruesome none the less
