This glorious short work--only about 8-9 minutes--usually appears as a filler on recordings of Haydn's Masses, but it packs a huge punch into a very compact space. Tuneful and orchestrally magnificent, it deserves far more attention than it generally gets. Listen and judge for yourself. The best version (Pinnock with the English Concert) is right here on RU-vid:
• Joseph Haydn, Te Deum,...

A splendid piece, to be sure! Thank you for speaking of it at such great length... It does not deserve its obscurity...

Hey, I played Left Tackle for Bratislava Tech in 1802 and I deeply resent this musical analysis.

Finally I bought this records and... wow! It totally got me in ten seconds! Not only the Te Deum, but also the Nelson Mass is a flaming masterpiece (what a beginning)! And Haydn had at his disposal only strings, trumpets, timpani and organ!! Generally speaking, I always had some difficulties with Haydn: it takes some time for me to totally appreciate his compositions; in fact it took me years to like his music (the opposite happens to me with Mozart...). It's the first time that I immediately love two works of Haydn. Thank you so much Dave!

That is, indeed, one wonderful recording. Both the mass and the Te Deum are just wonderful. Haydn's sacred music is just the best, really.

I agree. Everyone who loves Haydn-and all music lovers should-needs the Te Deum! Pinnock is great, but Gardiner is equally fine and also comes with a terrific Lord Nelson Mass as part of his series of late Haydn masses.

It's very good, you're right, but Pinnock still has the better brass section at the end!

Love the John Eliot Gardiner version. There are many settings of the Te Deum - Haydn’s must be the most exuberant- with a great fugue. Perhaps you could do a talk on the Te Deum ? A favourite setting of mine is Herbert Howells - the ending in the recording by St Paul’s cathedral is quite overwhelming. David Brigg’s version too which alternates the plainsong with thunderous organ solos is another favourite. Then there is Verdi, Vaughan Williams, Charpentier, Bruckner, William Walton (composed for the coronation of Elizabeth II)....

Hello David! Amazing piece, and a real sleeper - it deserves a lot more recogniton. I think that Haydn's Sacred music deserves an Ideal List - what do you think? Thank you for your amazing videos, take care.

I love your observation about the trombones at the Te Deum coda foreshadowing the coda of Brahms Second Symphony finale: only one of many moments making these broadcasts so enthralling. Another such is the scene in Rigoletto inspiring the Stringbass/ timpani moment in Mahler's First Symphony.

I love this piece - I've sung it too (with the Nelson Mass in the same concert). Lots of fun. I think it's more common to hear it in the UK because of the cathedral choir tradition. We love choral music here (and composers - we churn them out like there's a factory somewhere. Which there pretty much is...) This recording is the one I used to get to know the piece and it has a special place in my affections. For another three 'fillers' I recommend Simon Preston's disc of Handel's Dixit Dominus (why is this not better known?), Nisi Dominus (with a clever bit of sound painting as he depicts arrows flying in the fourth movement), and Salva Regina. The record shop in York I used to frequent when I began my musical journey told me he could play the first track from this and he'd sell out immediately - it was a sure-fire winner. Put it on, and turn it up as loud as you dare.

I already did a video on the Dixit--what a fabulous piece that is! I'm sure you're right, though. The English choral tradition is special, I think. There's a lot of it over here in the USA too, but I think it's more of a world unto itself--not so visible and not so much part of our general culture because the religious aspect is so much more sectarian. When you have an official, state-sponsored religion, then the cultural appurtenances that come with it get a lot of support and attention, and it becomes an aspect of daily life rather than a specialized leisure activity.

I found the Pinnock on Ebay. It awaits my attention. Talking about fillers: other popular ones include Mozart's "Exultante Jubilante" and Rimsky Korsakov's "Capriccio Espagnol." But, I'd rather have any filler included than a 40 minute CD.

The "Te Deum" is a _wonderful_ piece, which I first heard in the Pinnock performance, but I have been forever marked--maybe for good--by a RU-vid commentator who said of some uploaded performance of the Haydn Te Deum that she could never hear that big opening tune without thinking "Cowboys!" Apologies to those who feel that I have passed on the curse.

Yeah much to my shame I bought the Pinnock for the headline act (the Nelson Mass) but the Te Dium is as rousing a football chant as any I've heard!
