Symphony No. 52 in C Minor.
This is one of the greatest of Haydn's middle-period, "Sturm und Drang" symphonies, and yet it's hardly known at all. It demonstrates splendidly Haydn's ability to great a unified whole across four movements based on the simplest and most easily recognizable elements. Trust me, you'll be as amazed as you will be moved.

If only this symphony had been named by history “The Groan, The Moan, and The Squiggle.” We’d certainly hear it more often!

I just bought Dorati's 52 year-old LP of this last week! Goans, moans, and squiggles noted!

Your Haydn Symphony Crusade is absolutely remarkable, Dave. And that episode is particularly interesting. My preferred "Sturm und Drang" symphony remains n°26 ("Lamentazione") : a little bit above all the other ones, to my point of view.

My favorite recording of this symphony is the period instrument group The English Concert under Trevor Pinnock . Such a great cycle and I wish they did all the Haydn symphonies. Franz Bruggen’s is really good too.

I agree. The 6 CD album "Haydn Sturm und Drang Symphonies" by Trevor Pinnock on Archiv is one of the most recommendable Haydn albums.

Trevor Pinnock is an extraordinary musician and one of the few participants in the "Historically Informed Performance" camp that David routinely praises--because he is an exciting performer and conductor.

@@loganfruchtman953 Trevor Pinnock is one of the very few conductors (maybe the only one ?) who made excellent recordings of Handel, Vivaldi, Bach, Haydn and Mozart !

Outstanding as always, Dave! I'm very much looking forward to hearing what you have to say next about symphony 53! :)

That one's a project, but a very, very fascinating one.

Wow, that minuet sounds like sth coming from the neoclassical music of the early 20th century! Dave, this Haydn series of yours get me to have my appreciation for Haydn renewed every time. Keep up the good work!

Hans Rosbaud conducting the Südwestfunkorchester Baden-Baden is probably my favourite recording of "The Groan, the Moan and the Squiggle" 😊

In case anyone else may be curious about the moan in the 2nd movement, (the squiggle is obvious and everywhere and Dave pointed out the groan) I believe there is a moaning gesture that helps the transition from the B section back to the A section in the form of a slurred downward chromatic fall of 3 or 4 notes...and it occurs from 17:08-17:10...and repeats again from 17:16-17:18 in the time frame of this video

After Antal Dorati made his famous recording of the symphonies in the 1970s he commented that the two symphonies which were the biggest surprises for him were two without a nickname: the magnificent C major No 90 and 52 in C minor which I`ve thought of as the grandfather of Beethoven`s Fifth. It`s strange that it`s still almost unknown 50 years later.

Great video. David. Can't wait to see the video you will do on Symphony 53. It should take at least an hour, considering all the different Finales that have been attached to the work, lol..

You're not kidding. I'm working on getting permission to use clips, but we really only need to do two of the finales.
