Replace Alternator in Hyundai Sonata 2006 - 2009 

Do not remove the upper radiator hose. I’m a professional mechanic for more than 40 years now and I just changed the alternator on a 2008 Sonata and there’s no reason to remove the hose and having to bleed the cooling system. Great video, Thanks.

This is probably the most concise, real, practical instruction that I have come across. For some reason, finding repair information like this for a 2008 Sonata with the v-6 is not easy. Thank you for sharing your experience. It made MY experience a lot less frustrating and a lot more enjoyable.

I used your instructions on my 2006 Hyundai Azera. 3.8 liter. Thank you Josh your instructions were great. A couple notes. I suggest 2 people to put belt on And also before putting new alternator in. Put the bottom bolt in and thread all the way in but don’t tighten it. It will make it easier to line up the alternator and easier to get the bolt in.

Used your video as reference. Worked like a charm. I did not have to remove the upper radiator hose, but I did have to bend the suction line on the A/C compressor. Getting the serpentine belt back into place is a pain. Hint: Use a 6 point (19mm) socket on the positioning "nut." Also, have a 22 mm socket and ratchet and do turn the crankshaft over a turn or so by hand to make absolutely sure all the belts are properly seated on all of the pulleys.

Great video, very detailed. I used it to complete this task on a 2009 Sonata. In addition to Josh's instructions, in my case I found that once the mounting bolts for the alternator had been removed I could not simply reach in with my hands and remove the alternator. It was wedged in place by something I could not see. I had to use a pry bar to force it out. After it was out, I could see that the low pressure hose from the ac compressor, which sits directly under the alternator, was causing a pinch point. To install the new alternator I loosened the 4 mounting bolts on the ac compressor and backed them out until each one was still barely engaged. I then slid the compressor forward on the loosened bolts about 1 inch and this created just enough space for the new alternator to pass by it. Once the alternator was mounted, I then re-tightened the ac compressor bolts ( the two on the bottom were easy, the two up top were a pain due the limited hand space). I include this detail for other who may face the same problem. Thanks Josh for the video.

This is a great video and well done. One thing extra that I had to do to do this job... I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata (with a 2010 engine) with a V6 engine. This is when I wish I had a V4 but love the power of the V6. I ended up having to pull the radiator out so I could get the alternator out and the new one in. Things went quick once I decided to do this. It is messy with the antifreeze and transmission oil cooling lines that you have to disconnect to remove the radiator. The air conditioner condenser can be left in place. Just be gentle to not move things around to much on the condenser since it stays attached to the air conditioning lines. Just didn't have enough room but had plenty after I removed the radiator.

Took me three days but got it done finally...great, simple, easy step by step. Thanks!!

I just did this job following the directions from this video. Everything right on the money - and removing the dipstick as he mentioned is key. It takes less than a minute. Complete job took me nearly 8 hours but next time probably half that. Also l had a helper when l put the belt on / off. Great video - thanks for making it.

Great Video, thanks so much for such a quality video! The Alternator I got from Autozone was really tough to get into the mounting brackets, it was very tight. I moved the dip stick but left it in. Instead I removed the exhaust manifold shield and that gave me enough clearance.

Hey, so I have a Hyundai Santa Fe. It had the alternator And battery replaced last year and ever since then every couple of weeks It’s dies on me again as if it’s the alternator. Took it to a new shop and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. Just died again the other day, checked battery output and it’s low and then drops when I can get the car started for a little bit. Any thoughts? I will be checking the fuse. It basically stalls , all lights in the dash come on and I can’t accelerate.Oh and no lights were left on to drain the battery overnight Thanks!

The acceleration pedal stops to respond when headlights are turning on when I am driving. I need to release an acceleration pedal and push again to make acceleration pedal to respond. How do I know it's my alternator and not something fuel or something else? The car turns over with regular billowy noise and everything lights up. Todd happened when we tried a jump too. A few times after waiting too. No clicking noise like bad starter. Also checked fuse and it's real pretty...I don't have a tester but it looks brand new. Random info: 6 months ago I got a new fuel pump and stuff. Other theories my brother thinks I could have condensation in my fuel system because it was foggy af last night and humid FL like weather right now. I'm worried it's the alternator. I'm flat broke so I can't afford to get hosed. I'm scared. Any thoughts?

Where exactly.is the dipstick tube hole? I can not locate it anywhere. I have crawled under the car and searched around. I may have too much gunk built up that I can't see it.

Try the plug first it may look the same but not plug in after it's installed easier to plug in fist .

Is it possible to do this without taking off all that stuff especially the fan assemble? I did the one in our 09 rav 4 and it only took me about 15 min without removing anything but my wife's friend wants me to do hers and if I have to do all this I will pass on the job.

i have a 13 sonata 2.4 is this the same process for that application?

3 cans of CRC lectra motive with an oil pain underneath with clean an oil filled alternator. Then 1 can a month. You should also think out building a roof for the alternator so the oil just drips to the floor from the leaky upper valve gaskets. Been working for me. Family beater and original alternator still puts out 14.4v even with a 2800 watt sound system, power inverter. I'm using the 2 biggest agm batteries. I forgot the group h8 think and have no problems. I had no problems since the 2nd group h8. Before that my nephew would really drain the battery by idling and blasting music. Anyway this looks like a nightmare job so I'd rather just keep it clean and divert the oil.

took me 12 hours with 2 people, car was in a accident before I brought it I guess so all the hoses and the radiator was slammed forward was a massive pain in the ass even the entire engine belt fell off it was a complete joke but it was completed I guess ended up breaking the oil dip stick as well to add insult to injury.. definitely a shitty job
