Today’s video is a guest contribution from Steve, where he shows you how to replace the button and or battery in your Volkswagen Passat Smart Key.
The replacement button required is a 5mm x 5mm x 1.5mm SMD Momentary 4 Pin Tactile Micro Switch. You can buy these online in mulit packs for just a few pounds. Click on my website link below for more details:

It's a good idea to change the battery at the same time which is a standard 2032 3V battery.

Lucky man. Never "unsolder" putting a blade under as you did, you can easily ruin the board.

It appears you didn't have to reprogram your fob. Is that correct? Does it have to be done in a short period of time to retain the codes? Thanks.

Yes that's correct. No re-programming or time restriction was needed as only a switch was replaced.

hi, i have the same vw key fob, but i washed it with my jean. now i put a new battery in the fob, the next day the battery died, do you know what causes that? tks.

You have just saved me £277 for a new key fob. Its a bit tricky to get the translucent battery holding part free but eventually I managed to get the circuit board out from underneath without completely removing it. I then found that the locking button switch had completely dropped off the circuit board but looked ok. I soldered it back in place and reassembled the key. Works as good as new. So probably worth taking apart before ordering new switches...

great vid cheers, my fob has stopped responding to unlock (still locks with same fob) so I am guessing the micro switch has gone...took it apart, and while the button seems to still click, I'll be ordering some replacements and changing them over...cheers for vid, I'd have never got the fob apart to access the buttons without breaking anything if it weren't for this

I have almost the same key but with 4 buttons I could not get the glue to come undone so I gave up before I broke my keys 🤦‍♂️ I was just trying to switch the casing to a brand new one

Hey. My key for my vw passat 1.9 tdi stoped working yesterday. Same key as in the video. The red light still flashes. I changed the battery today and it still doesnt work. Does the key have to be reprogramed if you replace the battery. Any help would be appreciated... Cheers
