Replace Rheem A/C condenser fan motor - NO SKILL NEEDED

I was having issues with my fan motor locking up causing warm blowing air inside the house. Because of this it caused the inside unit to remain running all day while I was at work....only to find a $200 electric bill this month. SO I did some troubleshooting and found this was the culprit. The model of HVAC shown in the video is FPBA-036JAS. The AC guy wanted $350 to inspect and replace this motor... I was able to replace it for about $108 in about an hour.

Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I ru-vid.comUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

💯 in my new house after this one I moved up to a 4 ton unit and it takes way less time to cool the house it can run only 10-15 mins at a time now verses 30-45 mins at a tike before (know this by Nest App)

You don't need that ground wire when the motor is mounted directly to the chassis.

You should have turned the motor 1/4 turn with mounting screws & you would NOT have had any problems with the wiring going directly into the wire channel

Would be good if you showed how to wire the new capacitor into the old dual one. Brown wire to fan, other wire to C, right?

Nope and what do ya know 5 years later that bitchin 8" shaft still hanging downwards and still runs like a scalded dog!! Much like SOME of you HVAC people who use scaremongering used by your employers to down play DIY people learning to do these simple tasks around the house. I am much like everyone else in here tired of getting ripped off by HVAC companies. I LIVE IN FLORIDA AND IF THIS HASN'T QUIT AFTER 5 HOT ASS SUMMERS THAT $108 WAS TIME WELL SPENT!!!! I love reading the comments after years and years of people "discussing" all the ways they would have done it differently. I welcome all comments. :)

If you're in a jam and need to get a few more days out of the old motor hit it with 3 in 1 oil. It all depends on how your fan spins. When you spin the fan and you don't feel and resistance you should be good. If you feel resistance the motor is shot. Remember this is just to bye you more time untill a new motor is delivered. Also if you need to cool the motor down a wet rag will work. Just be careful.

Two major mistakes Bradley ... you didn't cut off the excess fan blade shaft (which can prematurely ruin your new fan motor), and you didn't warn people how they might die touching the capacitor even if the power is off ... and how to discharge that energy.

didn't cut off the excess fan blade shaft (which can prematurely ruin your new fan motor) - how?? The original one had the same 8" shaft with the fan mounted in the middle. Worked OK for 20 years. Also a 220V 50MFD hvac capacitor doesn't have enough power to kill a human...

Regarding the fan motor rotation CW or CCW. Is the turning direction with the fan motor mounted in the condenser with the shaft pointed downward toward the bottom of the condenser.

My replacement motor is longer than the original. When I adjust the fan to the highest position it is still below the fan shroud. Is your fan below the shroud? It is less efficient unless the fan is centered on the shroud.

For me, the motor shaft doesn't have a good connection to the fan blade. The set screw is tight, but the fan can move around the shaft with no problem. I wish the video would have shown the blade going onto the shaft.

Can you go over the wiring, we have the exact a/c and symptoms and we replaced the fan and it is running but now no cool air . We had cool air before just over heating and seize up. We removed brown orange from small capacitor and black from switch. How do we took up 4 lines, we have black, white, brown, brown/white and ground.

If it just a 20/30 dollar copasitor that you can fix, why pay 700 bucks for service or 1500 for a new unit? A fan motor can be replaced as well easily too. Its a rip off when you can DIY. It could be a fan motor, but mine spind freely, and I brushed the radiators and hosed them out. I could be a contacter. Trial and error. If a new capaciter doest work, then try a new fan moter with the old one. It could be a bad contactor too. The compressor works, fan spinds freely, but the fan doesnt kick on so the unit gets hot and the compressor kicks off. The radiator on the side of where the electronics are were caked, so I brushed them blasted the radiators with a hose with a good nozzle. Now to see if a new capacitor works, if not, its the fan motor. This fan spins freely. Seems like it needs power.. so capaciter or fan moter.

+James Hightower clueless dude dont call it a rip off when you dont have a clue! so do you complain this much about pricing that reputable other places charge ie your cost of food and alcohol? how about your nails? cup of coffee at starbucks /DD ? how about washing your car vs bringing it in?do you know what it really cost for products you buy off the shelf? does MacDonalds tell you the $4 hamburger costs a $1 to make?all cost about 3 times up to 50 times more than you can make or do at your own house? you going to buy chickens and cows now and DIY that?would you have known it was the ac motor and or capacitor had it not been for the professional diagnosing it? good for you you did it yourself? professionals charge a price thats fair to them and hopefully adds value while they are there letting you know other issues and gets it done for those who do not want to diy or can not.. 350 is not over priced for a replacement motor, if it were 500-700 which i know some flat rate price books have in it as a profit margin for super large companys to operate. again kudos and great you do it yourself but dont rip into and overpricing an gouging while you are in a public forum when you dont take into consideration what it costs for gas, maintenance , and vehicle costs just to get to each persons home, than cost not only to get a licence but carry vehicle and contractors insurance, pull permits, training, tools, overhead(untilities/advertising/websites/employees etc) and not only the cost of the parts and equipment but procuring them and then restocking them, they dont just suddenly appear in our hands and we just dont suddenly have free labor to put them in.. so lets try and be a little more happy you did this and helped another but at the same time not be a total tool putting down reputable contractors..some people are clueless..

Hi Brad, i have a question. i bought a replacement motor packard for my rheem hvac. everything looks just like your rheem. i ran my green ground. i ran my two brown and brown /white to my new capacitor. black goes to black.white goes to orange.. i see three orange wires in my unit. im not sure where they go exactly... im stuck on where exactly the orange wires go... if you can detail me. thank you
@DeepCleanProfessionalsLLCAkron
Your brown and white wire is common inside the motor which means you don't need to use if you motor had on 3 wires, so cap it off and zip tie inside box. Then you can hook it up the same way it was from factory with two separate start un capacitors.

All these butthurt AC guys should really learn something on how to fix ACs. Don't you love when they come out and change out a CAP for $250.00, when the cap itself is $3.00? Or when they change a fan motor for $450.00, and you look up that exact fan motor, and it's $120.00? No wonder people look on youtube to see how to do it themselves. Luckily, my AC guy is pretty honest (and I pay them extra for that honesty), but I have had very many that are not, just look below at the comments, you will see very clearly the dishonest ones.

A homeowner that knows a little about wiring could likely do it probably saves them some money as well because not saying you but there are HVAC techs out there that are more there for the money then the repair or just wants to sell you a new system when it's not needed this is what might give you a more of a bad name then anything else however anyone that dose the repair them self's put's it on RU-vid need to at least they need to put a disclaimer on there videos stating the that this repair is at their own risk act and judgement and that if in doubt get some out to do it then, that way you not going to get a bad rap over it if someone dose a stupid thing

Seriously man change your video to NO SKILL HERE. You made some serious errors in your video and could kill someone. At the very least you will blow up your equipment. You need to show how to discharge a capacitor. You didn't cut off the excess fan shaft which will cause bearing failure. You didn't get the blade back in the exact position which will cause improper airflow, but worst of all you didn't secure your capacitors which are floating around in there carrying line voltage. Thumbs down all around man. You did a nice tie off job on the wires around the fan and then you slip on the rest of the job? makes no sense! Think bro!
@deseremere
@deseremere 4 года назад
"You didn't cut off the excess fan shaft which will cause bearing failure" - it will cause nothing since the force is centered, it is a myth that the shaft needs to be cut. The rest is negligible, please provide a single instance of a human killed by a 220V 50 mfd capacitor ever
