Sometimes Jeeps won't start but all the electronics work. It might be a faulty ignition switch keeping your Jeep from starting. This video is a how-to for replacing the Start Ignition Switch Actuator Pin; a known weakness in our beloved Jeeps. If you aren't sure why your Jeep won't start, this probably IS NOT your issue because it is rare. And before you put time and effort into the problem you should diagnose it correctly. Mine isn't the rod. But the slider plate it goes into and I cannot figure out if or how to remove it from my donor colomn for mine

This solved my issue. I initially thought it was the starter. Changed that in 20 min. And nothing. The key felt a little funny so i pulled thie switch and the metal on the actuator was cracked. This video made this an easy job. Thanks!

I can not remember the whole process I went through but in the end it was a part closer to the column that broke. Went to the dealer for the part and he laughed at me..... the part I needed was " according to Chrysler" was part of the steering column and I had to spend $700.00 to get the part... yeah we had a laugh fest, and I left feeling really pissed, went home and repaired the part. What preceded my switch issue was actually handy since I could start the engine, then pull the key, go unlock my front door , hop back in and then be on my way, then forgetting that, get to work and reach for the key to shut it down, and have a little panic attack when it was missing..... ( in my pocket)

I just came across your video. The key for my Jeep Liberty (without any warning), has no resistance. Drove it to dinner. Got back in jeep, and put key in cylinder...turned 180 degrees with absolutely no resistance and no dashboard lights came on. How do I tell if it is the lock cylinder, ignition switch or actuator? I replaced my starter last year. 2002 Jeep liberty Renegade. The jeep won't start. accessories work and there's not even any clicking when I try to start the jeep. I bypassed the starter relay with a wire, with my key in starting position. It works. My question for you is, can a broken actuator pin / ignition switch still be the problem if I'm able to start the jeep this way?

A mechanic told a relative to replace that part. I did and that wasn't the problem. Loose wire on the starter, so check your battery then fusses then starter. Much easier to fix those then taking apart steering column for nothing.

My 2011 wrangler with a manual transmission will not start and I am lost. I have changed the ignition switch, screwed up the anti theft and got another and had it flashed. Thought everything was fixed as I drove away from the dealership but I got home yesterday and it started the same thing again, everything coming on when I turn the key but will not turn over. It will not even roll off, doesn’t even try to start. Before I screw anything else up and cost myself another $400 is there anything you can tell me to look at first? Thanks!

Great video BleepinJeep! I have a scenario hopefully you can help. I have an '06 Wrangler. Similar issues... turn key to "on" position I get full power, etc. I try to turn key more to start and nothing (No clicks no cranking). I was able to remove lock cylinder and tried to use screwdriver to start. No luck. I removed actuator housing and tried using screwdriver to start and it worked! I never removed ignition switch actuator from the switch. My question: Is the lock cylinder bad? Is the spring bad on the actuator? Is the cable that connects the transmission shifter to the steering column causing the ignition not to send electrical? Any suggestions would be great.

Our ignition pin went too but we ordered a new ignition originally thinking that was the issue, so now with the new ignition and pin in place, upon starting it stalls out, why? Put the old ignition in and it will run? Help!

What about if it won't shut off? I've changed the ignition switch and still won't shut off. I have to pull a fuse and then disconnect the battery to kill the dash lights

The problem im having is it will not start intermittently would this be the same probable cause. Everything lights up solinoid clicks and nothing, turn it a few more times it starts up. Then I can have no issues for awhile then again will not start turn the key a few times then starts.

Brandon Lukacs check wires to starter. Just idea on what i encountered with no start. Also check the fuses and relays first since they should be easier to check then if batt, fuse, relay and starter are fine move to the ignition switch.

I'm having the same issue. It will sometimes not turn over and I'll turn the key back and then turn again and it will start. I replaced the starter and that didn't fix the issue so I'm still researching. Let me know if ya'll find the fix.

My shroud did not come apart so easily. There were two bolts that held the bottom shroud on.

I bought a 97 xj that will start with the remote starter but with key in the ignition it will cycle and power but won’t engage the starter. Would this most likely be the issue?

I changed the ignision the actuator and the key cylinder on my 98 The thing is the actuator came with a spring and i did not know where it should go I installed everything and the car starts however some times it makes a click noise and i will have to try a few times before the starter engauges . Could that be a wrong installation or could it be something else

Have you guys ever swapped a 4.0l into a factory 2.5l xj? Im lookin for some tips on the ignition wire i have the whole 4.0l, tranny,tcase,harness and computer all out of a 93 xj but i notice while taking the 2.5l harness out of my 96 there wasnt the same clip or plug in it was just one plug with a bunch of wires and im wondering if i can fish the ignition wire out of the dash or collumn an plug it into the 93 harness?? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Im having the opposite issue. The Jeep starts, but the blower, radio and fan (which is on a switch) won't come on - unless I wiggle the key.

On my 03 TJ, the key will crank over the engine "sometimes" but other times it acts as though the actuator pin is bad. When it goes bad, will it never start at all?

Technically you could short the starter.

Tried that, the starter does turn over when I short it, but I would think if the actuator is broke, it would never turn over with the key. But sometimes it does.

I 2nd the battery still connected... and i hope that chunk of rebar is not your shifter, all be it a cool idea its a huge risk in a simple fender bender turning into michael on a stick!

Ok, let's talk about this. Probably should have disconnected the battery, but in my defense, this job doesn't require unplugging, rewiring, or messing with the electronics-just unbolting them to move them out of the way. Yes, that rebar is my custom shifter. However, I have the same safety concern you do, so this is just a prototype. And, it isn't as scary in reality as it looks from this angle in the video.

thats true but with all that wiggling and pulling you could end up with an air bag in your face haha. kinda treat them like firearms. always treat it likes its loaded and no accidents will be had lol. but i guarantee you'll only do it once lol

mike h the key is still there to turn power on for the jeep and the wheel lock. i just threw a momentary push button inline with the wires that come from the switch that this plastic piece activates. side note you can hide the button as a antitheft measure

I did mine a little different. I ran a wire from the cold hot on the starter to one side of the button and a wire from a fuse in the fuse box to the other side. turn key push button starts right up. thanks for your response.
